Do you think you should be able to climb walls, mountains, trees, etc.?

Hey guys! Just wanted to know you're opinion on some things.

Do you guys think there should be some type of skill line that could be learned to climb walls, scale sheer cliffs, climb the tallest tree? I personally find that a lot of games restrict you to the ground. If you want to get to the top of the mountain you can't unless it has a path. Since A.O.C. is heavily around exploration and adventure I personally would love to be able to climb a random mountain, maybe I find a new metal, maybe I climb a big tree and get hit by a squirrel.

I do think that certain nodes could have their political leaders choose to upgrade the nodes walls to make them smooth so they cannot be scaled in the event of an attack. Something to make it so it's not over powered, and that 300 people attacking a rival node can just climb the walls. But something so that exploration has no limits with being able to climb a huge mountain and fight a world boss of sorts up there, or find a treasure map to a treasure in a unexplored part of Verra!

Just an idea I was thinking about, I'd love to hear everyones thoughts!

  • An nice idea too is that a node can upgrade the trees arround the node ... After the upgrade there can hide peoe in the trees and surprices the atacker in a node fight

    99% I'll play mage as well, but I love all classes, and all classes should has its own thing. I mean mage cannot be climbing, but how about flying... Maybe we can play Quidditch in the game.
  • Haha, that would be cool if they added some type of sports, so you could settle something with a game instead of a fight! I saw a mage orb thing that flew in some gameplay footage!
  • I just in general hope that you will be able to climb on terrain. Whether for shortcuts or exploring.

    It doesn't have to be an official mechanic, we should be able to do it on certain terrain.
  • I'm all for climbing or even super mario tripple jumps and wall jump etc :D 
    But for everyone, not only rog and hunters. I hate playing rog.
  • That's why initially I said maybe have it as a skill line, so everyone could get it. But it would make the most sense for ranger and rogue to have it. I'm fine if they have it as long as every other class has something for mobility thing like that, (I'd love mages to be able to use a spell to turn into a raven or something but doubt it would happen, maybe summoners could summon a horse, warriors could have more general speed/stamina if stamina is in the game, Clerics could have more stamina regen, ranger/rogue could climb walls, bards could do some kind of speed buff, etc.)

  • Haha, yeah. It would be neat if you had some raids where if you were fighting a gigantic boss you could climb his arm or something!

    Sounds alright, if done well. Not sure it fits with the game.
  • Sounds cool but not something that I would want the game delayed for. I don't know how difficult the mechanics are to put in a game. 
  • I hope we can climb mountains by finding hidden paths or valleys.  I would be nice if rogues and or rangers had the ability to climb walls.   Then be able to let a rope over the side for others to climb.

    It would be nice if some vines clinging to trees or walls could be climbable also!
  • This has been answered a couple times in livestreams and I will drop the Discord quotes. Jeffrey has confirmed jumping puzzles and we know that climbing is a thing.

    I was reading down this thread expecting the @UnknownSystemError dump of info and good to see he didn't disappoint, but yes climbing was confirmed for some classes in certain areas.

    I hope that this doesn't mean that only certain people can reach all of the areas....
    rather that it's reachable by all, just with different utility skills....
  • I think with only some classes being able to climb it may very well be some places can only be reached specific classes. Unless they bring in some sort of grappling hook people could use but then it would take away the uniqueness of the classes that can climb.
  • I remember the quote being that everyone would be able to reach all areas, just not as easily. So while the rogue will be able to climb up to that ledge, or the mage teleport up, the tank may have to run all the way around the mountain, and jump down from the other side for example. There may be a wall that a tank can bash in, but the rogue will have to go through 3 left turns to get to the same room, dealing with traps and mobs since they cannot access the shortcut.
  • I just wonder how limited other classes are for doing the same. Like why woudlnt a mage be able to climb into a wall and a rogue can.

    If mages blink would have the ability to click somewhere and there you go, hands down for that.

    Why would a mage move a single muscle, while they can fly or teleport over the wall... Also Mages/Clerics/Summoners are not as agile as hunters and rogues. ( #classracism )They don't have muscle power as much as Tank/Fighter/Hunter/Rogues. Tank and Fighters cannot climb due to heavy armor. Maybe Summoners can summon a beast who can climb the wall and Summoner can ride on it.
  • Yep, but "climbing" should have some requirements for equipment /not for classes +(not in plate armor).
    It cold add some atmosphere in game - high secret locations/hidden caves and treasure chests etc.

    Look up Dragon's Dogma:Dark Arisen climbing and grabbing mechanics, it may be exactly what you are talking about, and also what I would love to see in game. Every class can climb but for how long is dependent on your weight

    This is what I seem to remember also.  Everyone will have a fair chance according to their abilities.  
  • I will be very disappointed if everyone cannot climb to some degree.

    I like the idea of the rogue being the only class that can climb up sheer tower walls (while everyone else has to go inside and use the stairs) but I want everyone to be able to climb a mountainside. Exploring will be such a fundamental aspect of this MMO, as stated on multiple occasions by the devs, so I can’t see them making any part of the world only accessible to a small subset of players based on class. 

    If it is as USE described then I’ll be happy enough – finding the alternate ways up to the cavemouth in the side of a cliff is part of the fun.

    It would be interesting to see it be a skill line that can be levelled, like in the other AoC – Age of Conan.
