Crafting Profession Limit

Without getting into the specifics of the crafting mechanics, (what types, how many, etc.) I'd like to ask for a definitive on at least one thing..

Please, for the love of all that is good, let me be able to have every single profession on a single character.

Most mmorpg's (all of the one's I've played), only allow you to chose a select few professions for each character. Some, force them into odd groups making you choose between certain ones; Sometimes making you have a profession you NEVER plan on using, just so you can have the one you want. So how do we remedy this?

We make another character!! Then we put a few more professions on there. For example, you can mine ore, process hides, and gather plants on one; and on the other, you can smelt and smith the ore, tailor/work the leather, and mix/cook the plants on the other!

But wait.. there's still a few other professions you'd like to have... so you make another character!! And get the rest, (or maybe just a few more depending on the list to choose from) on that character.

So now, Toon 1 gathers the resources, and Toons 2 and 3 process them. But Toon 1 is the one who uses 90% of the final crafting items.

So you're mailing resources to Toon 2 and 3, logging onto them (and let's face it, those toons never go outside of a 15ft radius of the vault/bank, crafting area, mailbox, and Auction/vendors), crafting the items, mailing them back to Toon 1....

It's exhausting, and frankly, it's annoying and takes away from my enjoyment of the game.

I love making second characters. I make tons of them. I want to experience each race, each class, and each distinct style. I DON'T, however, want to make more characters simply to be a "bank toon" or a "smithing toon".

Why can't we have a system like this: (I'll use a standard crafting list for an example)

Lets say you have 10 professions in total. (not counting "hobbies" like fishing and cooking)
- 5 gathering professions. Mining, Skinning, Forestry, Arcane Lore, and Herbology.
- 5 crafting professions. Smithing, Tailoring/Leather Work, Carpentry, Alchemist, Enchanter.

You have to choose 2 Specialist professions. These will level normally, and be your "Main Professions". In order to reach the highest rank in a profession, it needs to be your main profession.

You then choose 4 Secondary Professions. These will level at 50%. Meaning you'd only earn half of the experience you normally would for gathering and crafting. It would take longer to level, and you also wouldn't be able to craft the best of the best items.

The remaining 4 Professions would level at 20%. Again, you could not craft the best of the best with these either.

This would allow you to focus on specific ones, while still allowing you to do EVERYTHING. We've all had that Clothie who was our tailor and (insert magical profession here), that STILL USED WEAPONS FROM A SMITH. There's always something you CAN'T make for yourself, or something you have to go out and buy. I'd rather buy the materials. Seeing that little "Crafted by: _____" line just brings a smile to my face. When you work, and grind, and put all that time and effort for all those materials to make that one piece of insanely epic gear. Built to the hilt with the best stats, augmentations/additions, and the perfect color/look you want, and it's got your G-D name on it?? It feels pretty good.

Now you're gonna say: "But strange, that would affect the economy. There are reasons this is in place. Who would use the caravan system if everyone can craft everything??"

Well, you don't put every gathering type in every node or area of the map. Miners? Head for the mountains. Skinners? Head for the forests. Herbologists? Open plains. Magical/Arcane? Ruins or dungeons.
Not every resource would be available everywhere. Which forces you to either buy it, trade it, or go for a stroll well outside your comfort zone to try and gather it all up. It makes it so that you have to find a place for yourself. Maybe you want to smith, so you set up shop in the mountains, and you smith some stuff for yourself, and make yourself the best gear possible, and simply sell all your remaining ore for profit. That makes the resource available to others who can't gather it, yet if it isn't their main profession, they have to buy twice, or maybe five times as much resources to level it.

Make it difficult to have them all if you want. But please, don't make it impossible.

  • Also, don't make any sort of crafting item a "master only" item. For example, you can make this ring, but ONLY YOU can use it. What? Why? That makes no sense. Now, if I want it, I have to choose THAT profession as my main? That's infuriating. Sure, if it's not my main profession I can't CRAFT it, but I should still be able to ACQUIRE it.

The plan for crafting not being able to be mastered on a single character has been known for months. You will be able to "master" a single path of many. So prepare to alt up and work with others to gain crafting market dominance. As to artisan profession only items, that is not planned. If you can craft it, you can sell it. There is no plan for soulbound or character specific items, except in very rare cases.

    1) Where are you going for these screenshots?? You're everywhere and seem to have a response from Steven from almost everything lol.

    2) Fair enough, but can you understand my frustration with having to make alts specifically for crafting? They KNOW people will do that, so why not eliminate the cause?

    3) I've think I saw something mentioning "Player Customized" armor of some kind. Does that mean we can put a personal stamp or logo or something onto it?

https://forums.ashesofcreation.com/discussion/10158/quotebin-quotes-of-intrepid-team-from-discord/p1. I and a few others have spent an unhealthy amount of time going over every scrap of information that is released and trying to tie it into an understandable comprehensive knot. A lot of time is spent stamping out rampant speculation and just plain wrong information. One way of shutting down info trolls working an agenda is to slap them with a quote from the guy who owns the game.

    2. While it may personally frustrate you, other people have seen the self-sufficiency argument ring hollow when it comes to "let me play every class, and let me craft everything on one character!!" arguments a la FFXIV. They want an economy and playerbase that has to interact to achieve goals. Lets say there are 16 master trees, and you can only have 8 alts on a server, you are just going to have to work with others to reach those crafting goals. (numbers unconfirmed, pulled outta my ass)

well, your drive and passion really shows, and I applaud it.

    */applaud*

I can understand how it'll force more social interactions. Though, as long as there isn't "crafter specific" or soulbound crafting items, I can deal with that. It was mainly about the tedious swapping of characters in order to both craft everything, and obtain everything; So if the soulbound / character-bound crafting is essentially eliminated, then I guess it kind of works out.
  • @StrangeSinner To be honest, this is the entitlement that they are trying to combat. I mean if you can be self sufficient and don't have to interact with others why make it a MMO?

Also, they have stated they want to have a advanced economy and they have the common sense to know that you need players to specialize. Even in Eve Online where you can do every thing you want on one character, it still takes 8 years (Real time) to be able to accomplish this feat.

The solution is make friends or contracts with other players who don't give a damn about crafting to at least harvest resources for you.
