letting Players make the stories

I think it is a great move from Intrepid to let players craft the stories in their own course, the outcome of the players interacting with the nodes will be very diverse, and it is our responsibility as players to role play as much as possible.

Comments

  • Well considering that players are 'building' the world of the game I think it is enough(IS did say that no 2 servers will be the exact same) but forcing rp'ing on somebody is not a good idea.
  • Well I'm not telling forced, but we should make an effort.
  • Depends on what people like, I dont mind rp'ing but doing it most of the time in game would just be a bother for me :persevere:
  • I think the OP speaks to the point that a lot of this will be done naturally. Even though some will role play a lot, some never, and some in between the world will evolve through the decisions and actions we all take

As you're walking along a cobblestone path in town, you come across a small boy standing in an open doorway crying and stop to ask him if he needs help. He says his father went into the woods 3 weeks ago after a rare type of wood and hasn't returned. While you are chatting he notices the fine sword hanging at your side and asks you if you will find his father and bring him home. All he offers in return is a toy sword. Moved by his pleas you accept the quest.

After asking around you discover that type of wood only grows in one place. High atop a frozen mountain at the side of a cursed pond. It is a long journey full of dangers but eventually; you make it to the pond and find his father. However, his father has been corrupted by the dark magic of the pond and is now running with a band of rogues. They attack you, but you vanquish them, and after a fierce battle the boy's father is gravely wounded and on the verge of death.

"I'm sorry. " He says. "I only wanted to find this rare wood so I could sell it and give my boy a good life. Please, take it and see he gets it."

You have a choice to make. Should you bring the boy's father home like you promised and leave the rare wood behind, keep the wood for yourself, or take the wood to the boy?

You give the man a healing potion and carry him home. The boy is overjoyed and thanks you by giving you his wooden sword. Later, in the town tavern, you meet with your prophetic Vek Orc friend. He tells you you made the correct choice. Had you taken the wood instead, the boy would have grown up without guidance and come after you once he was grown when he learned that you were the one who killed his father.

You do see the boy later in life and he helps you on another quest, but that's a story for another time.

RPing is really just talking about what's happening in the world from the point of view of the character - which should be easy to do in a world that is dynamically changing.
Basically just means rarely talking about real world events.

In static themeparks, where buildings are already built and everyone repeats the exact same quests, there really isn't much point in discussing what's happening in the world because everyone has pretty much had the exact same experiences.
We've all killed the same mobs, escorted the same NPCs and fetched the same items.

In Ashes, we are much more likely to discuss current in-game events and politics and plans and hopes. Playing our various roles.
We might also discuss some real world topics - especially game updates and or live streams.
But, I expect everyone will inherently RP as they explain to other players what they've experienced, what they plan to do and why.

One thing I have always loved about the elder scroll is much of the lore is hidden away in books, players able to publish their own books I think would be an awesome idea. Maybe something like a player can carry a journal on them which automatically logs a lot of what they do then they go back and add in their own commentary or just write a book themselves
  • You come across a drunken Orc. Do you...

Step over her and keep on walking.
    Steal her coin purse.
    Grope her.
Lie down next to her and take a selfie.
Practice your magic by turning her into a Chocobo. Won't she be surprised!
  • I had mentioned this in a previous thread, but it would be quite neat if there were personalized rewards for the victors of war...  So for example, if there was a long-standing war over a node and the victorious side gets a special unlock to a customizable statue or other monument to be placed in the city center.  And then maybe at a later date, that same node and city gets overthrown, and the statue/monument then becomes a damaged ruin of a previous Kingdom.

I'm sure you can just glue it there ?
  • Don't have to RP to create a good story. Someone could just be a really good player and do lots of cool shit and then stories about them would just grow and become a thing. All player1 did was play but the other players create a legend out of it because player one is a damn good player. #Thelegend27
  • the problem with letting players create the stories in game is monitoring those said stories, that in itself would be a huge undertaking.
