Lets talk about Bards

Jack of all Trades, master of none. Well thats the general feeling of bard.
Will that be the fate of Bard in Ashes?
Well i believe Bard is an awesome class and I want it to shine.
So here is what i think.

Tellsword: (fighter) Feels straight forward to me. Some generic weapon attacks and a bunch of temporary buffs you can enchant your weapons with in mid fight.
Instrument of choice (whispers/voice)

Siren: (Tank) As a tank bard i think debuffing the enemys in various ways would be the way to go, while having to keep track on buffs you place on your partymembers or such.
Instrument of choice (screams of shouts)

Trickster: (Rogue) Again straight forward, an annoying shit who have the whole arsenal of annoying prankster traps and debuffs like tar and feathers witch slows, emptying pouches with slime the enemys slip on and such. Great melee kiter with daggers and stealth!
Instrument of choice (Fiddle)

Song warden: (ranger) Close to nature using calls for animals to aid or vines to grab the enemys feets etc.
Instrument of choice (using reeds and such to call animals)

Magician: (mage) Gambit! Need i say more. Flying arcane playing cards with a cane to smack them down with if they get close
Instrument of choice (Cane that is a flute)

Songcaller: (summoner) Calling ghosts to aid in battle, Really you can do anything with this. I can also get the image of Pied Piper of Hamelin to mind. Summoning rats to overtake the enemy in hordes
Instrument of choice (voice/boneflute/flute)

Soul weaver: (Cleric) Heals and flashy lighty priesty things. Hots all over the place.
Instrument of choice (Harp)

Minstrel: (Bard) This would obviously be the best of the best buffclass. INSANE Buffs all over the place. BUT to balance that out he has to be a scared pacifist afraid of fights. The only offensive attack should be "Throw lute in the enemys general direction and run" Giving the enemy a slow or knockback and yourself a speedboost!.
I can also see an ability that makes you run super fast in fear like a last resort spell. But you dont know in what direction before you click it.
Instrument of choice (LUTE)

So in general what i have in mind is a squishy class with buffs/debuffs/cc of all kinds and not many offensive spells.

The main thing i want the Ashes team to do when they create the bard is to have FUN :D
Also beeing a guitarplayer IRL i Would not mind it beeing possible to unlock a magicly enchanced electric guitar with an amp on your back with a tinkerer/engineering proffession xD So many skins could be done with that :D

Well thats my thoughts on Bard. Whats yours?

  • I think you mean Jack of all Trades not traits ? 'w' as for the bard the real question is how good of a living torch will they make ? or maybe an ice statue ?
  • I like to keep my hopes up, in worst case senario one can allways move into an in and play for a living :)
  • In my mind bards run around an try to kill people with instruments or torture you with singing.
Bard+summoner will be the strongest because he can summon a piano right over your head.

    talk about heavy metal ^^
  • I think that bard specs will specialise in what they are going to buff and how they are going to bring the buff across.

I also dont know why everyone is always saying that bards will have to use instruments to buff others.
YES, normally bards use instruments or are shouting at you to do things better.
NO, we will not have to rely on instruments in Ashes because we will be able to use other mediums of inspiration (poetry, dance etc).

    My imagination of the Classspecs:
Tellsword: Buff melee attack of allies and debuff armor of enemies.

Siren: Buff aggrogeneration of yourself and increase armor of allies, debuff enemy attack and speed.

Trickster: Debuff enemies with slows, confusion and maybe use mirrorimages?

Song Warden: Buff ranged attack of allies, debuff enemy defense and ranged attack.

Magician: Increase mana generation of allies, increase magic effects (maybe prolong ally dots or a straight dmg buff)

Songcaller: Summon adds, which are able to be used as extension lines of your buffs (you stand in melee camp and send your add into ranged camp and you then buff everyone around yourself and around the add)

Soul Weaver: Debuff enemy healing, etc and buff allies with hots, maybe increase defense of allies.

Minstrel: True Jack of all trades but master of none. Can do most of the things, but is not specialised.
  • Ock ladie, where would you put bagpipes in that mess of subclasses?
The fiddle is more a gypsy tool for calling ghostlies and other things that you do not want to met in the dark!

I think that the bagpipes would work better to summon ghosts xD
  • Or scare the ghosts away xD But it would be fun if they made it possible to level up different instruments, where different skill level made the playing do different things. Say you can max out 2 instruments, learn one pretty good and the last one you never got above beginner rank. And that beginner rank works as a fear xD. Playing the violin like a 10 year old and everything runs away from you xD.

    Did you try already? :D
  • Would also look really awkward if you try to beat someone to death with a bagpipe. Definitely not the best choice of weapon.  ;)

For our information, I played in D&D a bard with bagpipes for 3 years my dear sir!
    They never failed me :D

I have to say, that i never liked the idea that bards have to play a music instrument to buff allies.
    Until i saw this:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b04_FkDAfyo
    Timestamp: 1:15, 2:30 and 3:30
(I love how he just goes with it and keeps playing xD)
  • I would give bards some special weapons.. +4 bong of hippieness (that casts a stinking cloud spell )or something.
