yeah ! did you heard the thing bacon sayd in the stream ? could be a leak or a joke... at least it had a OOPS after :D and how Jeff responded to the Ray Tracing question in QnA? I think that says enough :P suprised nobody has been discussing it yet since applying this technology in MMO's would be groundbreaking.

For the unenlightened unwashed masses such as my self what exactly is ray tracing? What would it mean for ashes?

    iam no expert but
traditionally reflections/refractions/shadows are essencially presented to you as vieuwer in the form as a 3-d-layar and looks realistic because it has good texture on it ( example : a mirror ingame projects a image but the actual reflection is a texture and looks good alrdy in modern games )
ray tracing actually traces rays of light ingame, simulating how real life light works. ofcource not all rays of light possible can be traced because that would be a insane amount of data. but it predicts the most dominant light rays and light projection so that the reflection you see in the mirror is super realistic. you can imagine the insane amount of data it would take to simulate the reflection of your sword shining in your armor, and in return you can see the reflection of your armor back in the sword. these multiple layars are one of the advantages which makes ray tracing looks super realistic. kinda like a mirror> in frond of mirror>in frond of mirror effect that would be possible to simulate ingame.
whats amazing about this tech makling its debut in multiplayer games and especially MMO's is that all this data is rendered in real time and would require a 'rendering server' that prity much takes the load predicting the light rays and images. and having this rendering server work in conjunction with theyr multiserver mmo database seems a giant task expected to once be done by a AAA studio. so if IS pulls this off, they would really be pushing boundaries and my hype levels would be trough the roof :D

This video gives a very clear explanation of Ray tracing and how it works in battlefield 5. @varkun

I feel like they are moving away from the "making MMOs great again" stance to a "make the best MMO possible with everything in it". Let's hope it doesn't break.

I view ray tracing as a nice to have, but it would be very intense for computers, and I'd just as soon forgo it for gaming and leave it for movies.

BDO has something like this I thing in their remastered update

cool :D i agree if its to intense to run then no point spending time on it xd

  • I'm just glad they are looking at the RT tech at the very least. If the game is to be around for the next ten years (or more), it will come in time regardless. It dose push hardware to almost unplayable levels with current tech levels (a bit less for cards that are built for it, 2060+).. But AMD is now designing cards for it and the nvidia card will only get better.

Ray Tracing can push games to low frames but almost no one (or very few) play mmos in 4k.. A few more play in 2k.. but the mass-majority still play in 1080... RT should have no issues, even at current tech levels, playing an mmo at 1080. Raiding, sieges, will be issues or course.. but just average play, running thru the world.. It could be beautiful to see.

Again, glad they are at least looking into using it..

I was under the impression that UE4 was getting RT support built in. If this is the case, it may not even be that much work to add in to the game. Since it can be turned off completely, adding it won't negatively impact the game for those that won't use it.

By the time the RTX 3000 series comes out though, which may even be before AoC releases, ray tracing ould likely be reasonably standard.

^ that would explain why they'r experimenting with it

Cool, would be nice. I have an RTX and not many games I play to utilize the tool to the fullest so would be nice to get my card to sweat a little.
  • Applying this technology in an MMO for lighting would be performance breaking not ground breaking. Ray tracing is real time dynamic lighting on steroids because objects influence the lighting on other objects which creates a more realistic cast of shadows.

The only Ray tracing I have seen confirmed is in the combat (which isn't confirmed as it's just testing). That's where I suspect and hope they will be pushing for more memory as they need to get combat right on launch.

Prayers to their lead designer to represent the department and fight for it to have more resources spent on for launch. Pretty games sell and hype but nice combat reduces churn significantly and they do have a subscription business model. So I'm personally hoping that combat gets the ray tracing as lighting can always get it as an optional for very high graphics settings post launch like BDO did. IMO lighting is already looking great with bloom on dynamic directional and sky light with AO. Anything the art team touches will look first class anyway. You pay some of the worlds best quixel artist to texture and they can make vanilla wow look like a bloody ubisoft game from 2020.

wouldn't be surprised if it turns out they can't do it, but I'm alright with them giving it a good go of it.

Same, especially if they leave it open to readdress it in a few years time - as by that time a greater percentage of players should have compatible hardware, and the specific nuances of the technology should have mostly been figured out. Hell, a few years from now they would likely be able to hire a RT specialist.

Thinking about getting a new graphics card before alpha2 comes out... Should I put raytracing capabilities as something to consider for ashes prior to purchase?

it can help you with other games. and what else you gonna buy anyways? everything after the 1660 has ray tracing and there is no point in buying anything below a 1660

I was thinking about a used 1080 ti, still pretty good and decent price. Read that it's ray tracing is not that great though.

    I wouldn't.

This worked well a few years ago, especially if you weren't playing newer games. By the time Ashes goes live though, the 10*0 series will be about 10 years old.
  • @Vaknar This is an old post. But wanted to let you know that it would be cool to see more videos like above. To shine some light on the different departments at Intrepid, what they do, and what they are working on to make this game come to life. I know it can be difficult to get employees on camera to show face though. Maybe something to add in the future once it's not full on chaos internally to complete this beauty of a game

I wouldn't recommend it, what's the price for the 1080ti? Even the RTX 4060 (this is the slowest 4000 series GPU and starts at $300 new in the US) is faster and has hardware support for ray tracing. Ashes of Creation is using Lumen, which is the new "standard" lighting system in Unreal Engine 5 and uses ray tracing by default. They might provide a fallback for older/weaker GPUs but with the game probably still being at least two years away from full release I wouldn't count on it.

    Ya Lumen is epic.

@Xeeg new gpu's coming, prices dropping.

Should never buy hardware used unless you personally know the previous owner and what they did with it.

Also, don't fall for the Nvidia FOMO. You're not going to want a GPU with anything less than 12 GB of VRAM especially since we have no idea what resolution you want to game at or settings.
