Sexualization of women from a woman's perspective

  • I hope that they stick to "medieval fantasy" type of clothing. It would be a shame if I saw characters running around in bikinis, tracksuits, or something even remotley modern.

    @LatinKuro
i think you missed my point.
i made a point about you don't have to go full on nude to see a woman as sexy/attractive. And a woman with a armor that highlights her femininity can be sexy/attractive. but your example are just sluts. And i'm not offended by asian games for the most part for showing more of then US.
As a European i'm in between those two extremes as we are here more comfortable with showing skin then prude US, but not as fanservice as the east.
Also as a real medieval enthusiast i appreciate functioning armor over mail-bikinis
  • Just really want to be a part of this post and say, as a man, i hate the cleavage and g-string armour. I am an advocate for full protection (pun intended) and nothing makes me happier than a "realistic" armour set for any character.
Here is a armour set from Diablo and League of Legends. Though both those games are not without exemption to the rule they definitely know that there is other ways.
Hopefully we get robs for mages, jerkins for our rogues and sparkly sequin 3 pieces for our bards. xD
  • As a female player, I can not express enough how much I HATE being spoken for on this kind of issue by more conservative women who find issues with sexualization in games, whatever the logic, so here's my two cents.

I agree with the OP 100% that it should ultimately come down to choice. In any sort of world where people inhabit it, you're going to have people of all kinds, with all kinds of tastes, views, personalities, etc. Many women want to dress sexy, it's part of who they are as an individual, so not having the option is a barrier that neutralizes their individuality, and vice-versa for women who are the opposite. I won't complain about your full coverage warrior nun clothes if you don't complain about my figure-hugging sexy clothes.  I think there should be options for all kinds of people, and while I do understand that the developers are looking to have a more "realistic" theme in their high fantasy game, and have said they probably won't do plate bikini's because it wouldn't offer much protection for a person who's class uses heavy armor, the same logic really cannot be applied to medium/leather, and light/cloth armor, because they're not really armor anyway, and protect you from essentially nothing at all in a fight. What good is a sheet of cloth going to be when you're getting hacked and slashed at? You're relying on your reflexes, or your magic to protect you, not your clothes. So at the very least, there should be a significant degree of variety in medium and light armor in regards to this subject, since it would honestly make little difference one way or the other how "covered up" you are in them. You can make armor skins/outfits that are sexy, or stylish without showing too much skin, and that could easily be applied to heavy armor as well, since I don't think people who want to play a heavy class should be limited.

I think the outfit they show the elf mage running around in, in the alpha footage is pretty stylish, and a nice example of what I'm talking about. Since I am a female player, who plays female characters, and enjoys femininity, I don't want my mage to have to look like Gandalf. Variety is key.
  • Well I say undead so have full plate and not just robes what do you say to that ^^

Don't like skimpy armor because it's not real armor ? don't wear skimpy, just do NOT try and ban skimpy armor from the game, and guess what your full plate armor is not real either it's all pixels.

If I want my character to look like this:

That should be my choice !

You want to wear full plate that is your choice !

This is a topic where japanese games are far ahead of us, they do not let cultural or sociopolitical bullshit dictate what can and cannot be in a video game.
Well no... It is not only your choice. What age ratings AOC has? I'm sure many people under 18 will play and this kind of slutty look shouldn't be allowed,
I'm over 18 and I still do not wish to see things like that every corner. If I want to watch porn, I'll go to porn site, not to fantasy game.

If we allow dressing like that, then we should allow realistic treating of people dressed like that -> vendors and most npc's auto ignoring them beacause they assume this character is a whore or a slave, not an adventurer.
  • Wow, this went to the dark place. Calling people sluts and whores based on how they dress.

I liked the 'variety is good' plan. Not so keen on the judgement. Gross.

Hey, AOC wanted to make lots of things realistic. I just think this is realistic. You cant say you wouldn't look weird and/or disgusted at someone who walks on streets in something like on the picture above?

I'm all for sexy. I just dont think oversexualizing is good.
It's normal that a bartender or a rich seller won't give a "rescue our village" mission to someone who looks like e.g. beggar. Maybe it's not fair, but that's how it is.

    2 cents worth inc...

I'm game for sexualized outfits for both genders and appropriate outfits for both genders. I also think that super skimpy outfits should be sort of "town clothes" or something that auto switches to armor during combat and then switches back, or conversely has a lower armor rating.

I advocate +1 to freedom of expression and +1 to realism. I want to see the possibility of shirtless well endowed men in speedos and sexy apple-bootied, busty women in bikinis. Why not. But leave me my armor options for both genders as well. Personally I separate skimpy and heroic.

What I'd like to avoid though is having that be all that I see and turning the game into a fapping sim. Don't really know how to prevent that when allowing everything. When 8/10 characters you see are scantily clad women, immersion = broken. So maybe impose fines on being too revealing in city streets? idk then we could have streakers running from the guards as a thing that happens XD.

And for reasons of distractive variety I cannot play attractive female characters because I miss out on half the game. Thus I'm advocating more on behalf of others than for myself since I'll likely be a male in full armor.

    Just saying.
  • I think everyone should have an option to choose the armor they are wearing, what would be even better in my opinion is having the armor represnt its purpose immersivley.
In other words, if you wear a cleavge armor, your chest area is open for injuries.
So the best solutions, is having these types of armors as casual wear, while leaving the "Sexy" aspect out of the real combat.
Again, in the end of the day its really a personal taste, I dont want ass and boobs being shoved down my face everytime Im roaming around a high fantasy world.
    Just my opinion.

I think choice and variety should be the more important factor.  If I wanted my cleric to be more conservative, or more risque, or just have her own look that decides what to accentuate, that should be my own choice in fashion, which should be different across culture and region in AoC.  When people get into the realm of disallowing or punishing certain outfits for the sake of "realism", please remember, you may be clad in armor, but you are taking hits and damage from sources that armor would likely not protect, at least not for the number of hits you are taking, "realism" and "immersion" can just as easily prove stifling to players and gameplay for the most inane of reasons, and you are still free to be as (non)judgemental as you like.  If they've the gear transmogged, I do not think we should punish the warrior gameplay wise any further because he decided "Conan the Barbarian" look instead of the "Dark Souls Protagonist" look.
  • As long as the outfits make sense. The rest is choice. If you're going into the battlefield half naked, you better hope you have some powerful magic protecting you from the blades and arrows.

Aside from that, let people wear what they want and let clothing/armor have consequences in combat instead of just pure fluff.
  • Undead mages don't wear plate.
(and even the plate armor of undead knights is often skimpy and revealing)

    Agreed.

The aesthetics of outfits should only be aesthetic, and lore should be expanded to fitting aesthetics rather than restricting aesthetics over lore. I don't even like most skimpy armor, but not even allowing it or penalizing it for the aesthetics only makes the aesthetics worse.

I read through a little bit of this.. I'm a guy, so my opinion is automatically cut into a third because of the topic.

Whether i choose to play a male or female character in-game.. I just want my speedo outfit, sandals, off-hand ice cream cone, and a sombrero.   I hope these cosmetic items make it into the game so i can live out my dreams, and have just stupid amounts of fun in the game.

It's not very practical, but a boy can dream!

  • lol Nagash.

  • nagash    wants to polish his bones before going into battle that's his choice.
Who really knows what kind of world we are being tossed into in order to reestablish  civilization?   The many natives of the Amazon or Native Americans covered their private parts as well as they could.  lol
    My point is, CHOICE.

What I don't like are the wee boys running around naked dancing or trying to put on displays of sexual conduct.   That's not classy but shows weak minds IMHO.

  • I am pleased to see this has been a fairly respectful discussion of different views rather than the typical venom laced scorched earth argument I have typically seen.

To me I believe everyone should have choices that reflect their tastes.   Taste being subjective, rarely can one say they are right, and the other is wrong.

As for a realistic look, that went out the window as soon as Intrepid offer people the ability to look like Battleguard Sartura from WoW, or a card from MTG Arabian Nights.  Yeah, seeing some guy with four wings, and glowing eyes buying daggers from a vendor is totally realistic, but a chest plate with a neckline is not.  Sorry, can't agree with that.

I do believe Intrepid has already created the solution to this though.  That being the use of skins, like the Angel/Demon purchased from the Cash Shop.  Depending on the cost, I do believe it could go a long way to satisfying more interests.  Also helping to defer the cost of making them.  As long as they are not in the league of $$$$...

Lastly, for those that have an issue with the cosmetic skins, I believe Intrepid could simply create in the Client System Menu a check box labeled "View Cosmetic Skins".  Uncheck it if you don't want to see them.  Simple.

The thing is... I totally approve sexy. I just dont approve slutty. And sadly pedo  / slutty is the direction most of eastern games are going.

This for me is pedo and slutty. Sure it's kinda kawaii but its too much nudeness for me to think it's proper. It's still 8 years old body half naked.

This is also slutty. Not sexy.

I hope most agrees with me on that. It seems both are TERA pictures (not on purpose, thats just my google images findings).

It's not that I have something against skin showing. For example this wizard outfit:

It shows a lot of skin , but yet is not so oversexualized like the first 2. It's all about balancing it out.
Yes, I agree completely with what you have to say. there is a very clear line after which whatever is made, is slutty. before that, most armors can easily be sexy.
Also, you are right, that is TERA. about that, have you seen the castanic female armors? some have even less coverage than what is shown there.
