Will there be different races of humans?

Any chances of seeing Asians or African styled humans for example? Or will humans fall all under one type?

They should have their own cities and cultures like the Redguard of Elder Scrolls and the Elonians of Guild Wars or the Erudites of Everquest. They shouldn’t just be a skin color choice of human while living in a European styled culture. They can be their own unique cultures like they were in Vanguard Saga of Heroes with their own unique gods and unique magics.

If we can have different types of Elves why can't we have different types of humans?

  • Well, if they go with a wide variety of customization, I think you'll be able to make all types of human races.
I hope they're going to do that. I really love/hate to spend several minutes (sometimes an hour), making my character.
  • Its more than just making different races with the character creator, its also about different human cultures like Guild Wars Nightfall and Guild Wars Prophecies for example. Personally I'd like the cultures to have meaningful places instead of putting everyone under the same umbrella like Warcraft and never seeing a major npc of note having as varied looks as what you can make in character creation. Having a varied character creation system matters little if all of the prominent storyfocused npcs are still one race.

Playing the "brown human" under the same broad umbrella of "humanity" just isn't fun if everyone has the same culture, wears the same armor, eats the same food and uses the same type of weapons as well as worships the same gods. Like with the first Everquest it was nice on one end seeing the Erudites but then on the other hand seeing the Barbarians and them having their own places to live, their own classes and their own armor designs and weapons.

There could be groups based on the Norse, based on the Medieval Songhai Empire and then based on the Chinese (Japanese culture is far too overplayed for mmorpgs, it would be nice to see Chinese like culture have its own place for once). They can all have their respective designs, armors, weapons and individual pantheons that look like the people themselves.
  • Ah, I get your point.
Well it depends on their lore, gods, myth and beliefs. And we don't know much about that yet. Time will tell I guess.

EDIT* You can try ask them in the #ask_intrepid section on Discord. Maybe they'll eventually answer your question.
  • Definitely an interesting concept to have different cultures within one race. But it seems like it'd be a hard one to pull off, as there will also be multiple non-human races in the game. So having those, we'd need multiple cultures for multiple races — and that would be great to me — but seems like it'd require a lot of work. Lore is insanely important, but I think polishing the game itself is too, more so.

It's something I could see evolving over time with patches and updates, it would just surprise me if they were to make several cultures for each of the races in-game right off the bat. With some of them I suppose they could get away without having multiple cultures depending on the backstory of the race though.
  • Their avatar making concept is similar to BDO's (I believe), so I am pretty sure that you will be able to make characters of that race :) (I could be wrong though...)
  • More people tend to play humans than any other race, especially since humanity is real and other races aren't.

Games like Asheron's Call, Everquest, Vanguard Saga of Heroes, RIFT and other mmos have pulled of multiple races of humans quite easily. Titles like Everquest and Asheron's Call were mmos that were at the beginning of the genre. I don't see the difficulty.

Final Fantasy XIV takes a great approach with its Highlanders, Midlanders and other variant races like Duskwight Elezen and Wildwood Elezen.

I don't think people would have an issue with there being three races of humans and five non human races. Five non human races out of eight is more than enough. Especially since most people play humans. Other variants of humans are easier to develop than a brand new race because they are using the same type of models aside from things like hair type and in the case of a game like TESO they all use the same hair types as well, only the weapons and armor are different and even then all the human variants like Redguard, Nords, Imperials and Bretons can use all of them.

This is less about character creation and more about individual cultures.

I was going to ask the same thing but specifically regarding Asians. Most Western MMO's let you make various types of white, black, and brown humans. But they rarely allow you to make characters that truly look Asian. Even something like GW2's Asian-inspired character creation options still look too generic and white to me. I'm not Asian so this is not some personal thing, but I just love the way Asian people look (maybe my years playing Korean MMO's have influenced me lol). If they could include some character creation options that realistically cover a variety of human ethnicities, along with Asians, I'd be a huge fan of that.
  • Someone mentioned this on the discord too, but from some of the concept art images, there seems to be like "hawaii dwarves". So different cultures could probably be a thing, how it affects the game remains to be seen though ;) (Might not be dwarves could be stought humans too ;) )

  • Diversity! Count me in! Not every character has to look caucasian.

    @Julemanden
You just have to love the concept art Intrepid gives us ^-^

Agreed, nor does every god or every culture
  • Shame there still is no feedback on this.

Again this is a culture conversation not about character creator.
  • They still haven't announced what races there were going to be. From early impressions they said that there were 4 races with 2 subraces each. So if there are humans there are likely only two variances same with elves, dwarves, etc if those are the races being added which I hope is so! I prefer traditional western fantasy!

Well, not necessarily. I would also like different character designs for NPCs. The whole game shouldn't be white-washed..

  • I suppose when it comes to games like Guild Wars in particular, it makes sense to have humans from different cultures represented as completely different characters because those landmasses are actively represented and referenced in game (Cantha, Elona, Tyria and I suppose Utopia as well) but from what I understand about Ashes of Creation, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to simply have one human race with a wide variety of customisation options.

I say that because from what I get about the lore in Ashes, everyone is returning back to the game's continent after it was destroyed, meaning civilisation is essentially starting again. Much of your character's culture and identity appears to be up to the player such as deciding what deity to worship while in games like Guild Wars 2, those cultural identities are set in stone. From a roleplaying perspective I feel like this offers quite a lot more freedom on the player's part as well since they can pull from the game's history while still making their character quite unique :)

All that said, as someone of Nigerian descent myself, it's cool to see a request for more racial representation in MMO humans :)

I agree I think the culture of the races in this game might all be the same and that's ok. It seems to make sense for this game and I've certainly seen tons of game before that do that. I do however want to see a variety of character customization options. It's a lot of fun to play around with character creators. :)
  • Dreaming ...... Due to the proximity and exposure of the native suns some avatars are now green, orange, purple, and magenta by daylight and some, the worst effected, glow at night. This might frighten or weaken some enemies, others it would enrage.
