Taiming/ Mount suggestions

On discord we were talking about this and before it gets hidden in the wall of text ill put it here;

a capture, breeding, raising mechanic similar to BDO's

common mounts like horses would use a normal rope

where the higher tier mounts would require special mats to make the rope (i.e. flame resistance mat for a dragon)

  • Sounds good.
  • Not a bad idea, but i'm not so sure Dragons would make great mounts. I'm pretty sure it would be best to keep possible mounts to things that are not flight capable. Makes to much of the game skipp-able if you just fly over everything IMO.

this is from the discord #ask_intrepid channel

Q: Will there be OP flying mounts ? (Since we saw dragons on the concept drawings you sent)
A: Dragons are epic mounts that will have strong battle abilities IE AOE Breath Weapons, swooping flyby attacks, and others. They will only be available to Kings/Queens of Castles, and Elected Mayors of Metropolis stage nodes.
  • Have to agree with Terminus, maybe avoid giant/flying mounts. Perhaps something like a fiery demon horse? http://tinyurl.com/jjsnxbj

edit: just saw the Q&A, rip
  • Thats fine, as long as they are of hugely limited use. Maybe a 1hr duration with a 3-4day cooldown lets say, meaning using outside castle warfare would put you at an extreme disadvantage if you had to defend your castle without it
  • 1hr duration with a 3-4 day cool down sounds extreme, maybe a better solution would be it can only be summoned at a siege? as for the mayor's ones idk
  • What worries me is if it has AoE damage, we may end up with an Eve Titan scenario were large guilds just drop multiple dragons in one seige zone and AoE everyone down.

as long as a guild only own's 1 castle they will only have 1 dragon by the sounds of "only be available to Kings/Queens of Castles" and im guessing that would be the guild leader as well

I think what you're saying could be something to be worked with.
Massive flying beasts would consume immense energy and probably suffer altitude and/or range limitation....the pros being they can carry a lot of weight.
Small flying beast would consume much less energy with good range and/or altitude... but the con would be they could not carry much weight (ie messages and small singular goods). More of an ROV than a transport.

There is of course no reason this concept could not be extended to above land, below land and sea (rather than just air).

You may even require the harvesting of beast specific food/drink to optimise strengths but induce new weaknesses.
ie, a cargo dragon vs a combat dragon.
  • Didn't one of the Lineage 2 castles allow you to use a dragon or a drake and such?
If I remember right they were powerful, but they weren't godlike raid boss encounters, especially with siege weapons being in the game, just set up right and a dragon would be nothing.

A breeding system would be cool though, but let's remember ARK survival. Babies take work.
  • It seems as though dragons are only going to be used by kings, queens and mayors - very powerful people. It wouldn't make much sense if you were able to catch such majestic beasts by just using some rope with fire resistance. The tameable mounts should be creatures that you regularly see strolling around in the nature around nodes and such.

    - I'd love to see a system similar to bdo, but huge epic mounts shouldn't be something everyone would achieve. You still wanna feel special when riding around or into battle on your riding companion.

i was just using dragon's and flame rope as a example for the requirements of the higher tier mats.

another example would be the Fuzzy Monkey Butterfly's could require a silk rope lol

Best name for that mount :)

But why only ropes, why not cages, traps etc. Or just befriending it in the wild. If its only one thing to catch them its kinda limiting. If you have multiple gear options for different mounts, it gets more interesting (in my opinion).

Also is there/do you want a tamer skill?

haha can thank error for that one :P (naming it), and yeah have different ways of catching different mounts e.g. passive mounts wouldn't require aggressive taming requirements so maybe feeding it some type of food would do the trick etc etc
  • I love those ideas! Yeah, I am also for a little diversity. Using a rope for everything is rather LAME.

I don't know about flying mounts in general. For me at least, they have to fit into the overall game environment. Furthermore, do they give additional attributes? If so, what kind of attributes? Do dragon's have a special skill which will give the entire guild a buff, or will they use aerial attacks?

I know that sounds a little contradictory but I would love seeing airships.

    - They don't have any combat prowess
    - They can only be used by several people, say - everyone on it has to channel Stamina or Energy into it to fly
    - (Maybe) Only usable in certain regions? In a city for instance, displaying the Guild's emblem. Or when traveling to your castle.

I think a massive warship, which is only purly cosmetic, would look awesome. It would be something a guild or friends could work for. I don't know, I think the idea just sounds marvelous. What say you?

    Airships. Hhhmm.
I read a lot of the terry brooks shannara series so find this concept intriguing

It would have a kind of synergy between crafted tools and wildlife tools.
The beast world can fulfil many of the roles we use in the modern world and still do in some places.
Perhaps even race/class specific preferences between the two.

The main problem, as always, is making sure nothing offers a 'net' advantage or bias.
    Counter balances in effect.
  • @zention, i dont know if having airships will fit into the lore of the game, however naval combat has been confirmed so maybe just maybe we will see some sort of warship,

I think it could easily be incoporated into the lore if they want to, not saying they should be (for me land and water is enough). But if you want it in the game, it could be done like in this book series I read recently: The Prince of Thorns (+rest of series so far).
    <strong>***MINOR SPOILER***</strong>
This series is in medievel times, but with the twist that its in the ruined world of modern society. You aren't told this at the start, but you slowly work it out as the story progresses. Basicly by you being told about modern things/structures, that they say "ancient beings" made, most of the items are of great values, since they don't know how to make them.

So you could just go "we found this tech, we only know that it works by putting lumber in here, and then it moves" (or something like that).

we dont know what the lore is yet, other than is a medievalish period of time, i personally dont see airship's being in that sorta theme... but you never know!
  • @Shunex
Yeah, thought as much. I would love seeing something like airships being incorperated into the final product. They can act as pure visuals. As stated above, Guilds, for instance, can build their own airships which in turn are only playable during castle sieges or in cities - displaying their prestige. For me they could act like portable Guild Bases since I don't know about Guild Halls.

<strong>Are Castles the equivalent to Guild Halls, or do both exist or does neither of them exist for pure Guild purposes?</strong>
    <em>
Assuming that Castle Sieges are something done by opposing Guilds, giving the victorious Guild the chance to make said castle their own:</em>

I believe that not every Guild will be able to conquer its own castle. Guild Airships could do the magic there. Guilds would still have their own space, maybe Crafting Stations, certain 'rooms'. A small battle ground yada yada. This space can of course not compare to the entirety of a castle'. These changes could be realised in later implementations. We don't need everything in the vanilla game.

Guild Wars & Guild Wars 2 were pretty successful in bringing the best of both worlds to our computer screens. Fantasy and progress. Technical progress should exist to some degree. The Middle Ages, as they are lovingly called, consisted of different time periods, there were multiple inflows and most importantly later on the surge for knowledge. High Fantasy sure is 'interesting' but being stuck at the same period technical-progress-vice is a little frustrating, to say the least. But that might only be my opinion. Thoughts?

    My opinion:
High Fantasy can be found in every single game! If there is no difference between the plethora of games out there, why should this be any different than other games? Progress of some sort should be made part of every game. If the lore starts out like the usual:
We, the hero, have to fight against the ultimate evil. What makes this game any different from the others out there?
Technical advancement could offer an entirely new way of progression lore/story-vice!

    Your opinion?

  • Anything that brings in magi-tech, steampunk or engineering/tinkering things I support :D

I think Archeage took the tech side a bit too far with submarines, cars and speed boats, but I liked the fishing boats.

Quick question, flying mounts are only for the Kings and Queens right? There were lots of arguments in WoW that stated flying mounts killed world PvP.
  • For me it has always been a quation of technology 'or' magic.
Sometimes one is replaced by the other....but they rarely exist together in high fantasy.
You might see remnants of one or the other though as some kind of acknowledgement.

Still, at the end of the day, magic to one, is science to another.

i like airships in the right games AA had a good balance, for me its all about the lore of the game, if it fits great! but i guess i gotta wait for more information regarding the lore of the game to form my own opinion.
  • Flying mounts? Naah. Exploration is and should be a big thing. You aren't going to discover anything, if you just jump on your Pixie Donkey and fly over everything.

A thing I would love to see, is that everyone should be able to get a standard horse as a mount. Maybe, if you have the money, a War Destrier or something like that.
But, exotic beasts as a mount or as a pet, should be captured in the wild.
Adult beasts should be nearly impossible to tame, unless you can charm it with a spell (which it can resist) or you are a skilled animal trainer.
Juvenile beasts could be easier to tame and train. In time they will grow up and become more loyal and stronger.
Wolfs, Bears, Snow Leopards, Eagles would be an awesome choice as a pet for Hunters.
You might even come across an unusual egg and try hatch it.
Who knows? There is plenty of other ways to get mounts/pets, than just buying them from a merchant/or Cash Shop.
  • I love the idea of non generic mounts like gryphons, unicorns, weird looking lamas and what have you. taming each creature could be unique like maybe you can only find gryphons in the mountainous regions and have a certain type of saddle to make him your friend for life. I think mid game is the right spot for middle tier mounts that fly. maybe the things needed are crafted or bought from a mount vendor.

if all I had to do was stake out a special spawn place and have my saddle and hay ready after I beat him an inch of his life and it was a minute timer im happy and I accomplished something. (nobody wants to sit for an hour and half stuffing narco berries down the mounts throat, that you obvisouly don't even have enough of to begin with just to be pk'd and come back to find the stupid thing just died.... crying on the inside)

personally if taming is going to be extra tedious and difficult like "ark" (I hate you) then a lot of people will be sad and feel empty inside. it should be simple and fun so if people want to just collect mounts they can do so.

I also don't mind flying mounts outside of sieges as long as they are passive to just get around. I do understand that if your flying you not exploring but in my opinion its just another form of casual gameplay for certain individuals that like to site see.

P.S. if you do make a gryphon mount don't make it epic cause then I might cry that I couldn't casually obtain it.
  • in my opinion, should make the mount is a race signature like dwarf can have air ship, human have horse, elves have deer, orc have boar etc
u can tame beast and raise it,upgrade it to some certain mythical beast which give u some certain buff and help u harvesting etc and i'd like to see some dragon to guard my house =]]
  • I think a great diference on mount gameplay is improve physics on riding system.
Most mmo's made mounts with a strange movimentation without inertia.
I want more emotion ridind my mount (need for speed like)!
  • I am all in for a taming kind of approach. Possible mounts that may only be tamable in certain seasons because of the change in behaviour or "random" opportunities. It's probably to much to ask that (just assuming that taming will be a thing) it's a longer process. Finding one marking it and revisiting and building a relationship over days, maybe weeks.
Some need to be subjugated, others need to be befriended, some might draw a liking to you because you helped them out of a trap. Possibilities are endless. Let's hope and see.

As to what kind of, I love the shown concept of the mule and I'm curious to see what else will life in this world. A personal favorite would be a gliding sandal of course that regularily get's lost and reappears randomly.
Or i could settle with a feathered raptor like beeing. That would be neat too. (no, I do not mean chocobos .-.)
  • I like the idea of Guild Masters having an "Ace up their sleeve". What other flying mounts can compare to a Guild Masters? if non should they have that much of an advantage over others. Inner turmoil within guilds, or switching the title of Guild Master just for use of the Dragon are some things I can see happening and ruining the experience.
  • I really love the idea of various ways to tame certain types of mounts. If you plan on making your primary profession animal husbandry, you don't want it to get monotonous by simply catching mounts the same way all the time. For those that you do catch, I think having ropes made of different materials is a great idea, since it makes sense that a simple rope won't work on all types of creatures.

Mounts will most likely be the primary form of transportation and immensely important for traveling such a vast world, so having a very unique mount that you worked hard to tame should be something to be proud of, just as much as a good piece of gear. I'm really excited to see what's involved in the breeding/taming portion of the game! Especially how we'll be able to sell mounts to other players. Maybe a little stable in city nodes where other players can inspect your mounts that you're selling?

It would also be great if mounts were able to swim instead of sinking like rocks if you happen to accidentally run into a lake. :P
