In the Forest of Rai, among trees taller than the spires that dot the Riverlands of Old Aela, the voices of our ancestors rise up in harmony to greet the kalends of spring. As snow piles in the highest boughs, musicians gather among the roots, their woodwinds slotted with fresh reeds, as they prepare to break winter’s long silence. Suddenly, the quiet vanishes and the air is filled with music. The young ones, newly come-of-age, gather to meet and to be met, to judge and to be judged, and perhaps beyond all hope, seek to find a soul with which they can share their hearth and home. The music calls to them, and they rise with shy smiles, their eyes a-glow with the promise of new love. As it always has, and ever shall be, Spring’s endless dance goes on.

Deepwood Syrinx

Accessory Cosmetic Skin *

We sang from our hearts with our feet bared on the hard frozen ground, accompanied by musicians playing the syrinx, the traditional instrument of our people. We sang together as our ancestors had before the sky fell. There was no doubt as to whether we’d done justice to the ancient melody. The forest told us so.

The syrinx is a beautiful stylized pan flute, carved from silver wood with delicate engravings of dryads, and adorned with a dangling silver amulet depicting a mythical tree-woman.

Deepwood Vyla

Pet Cosmetic Skin *

Many melodic themes in Py’rai music are inspired by the call of the Deepwood Vyla. Its vibrant colors peak in late winter, coinciding with the renowned Py’rai Goddess Festival. During the festival many of the colorful birds can be seen perched among the great woods, trilling away their calls for mates. The Vyla will not breed in captivity, making their colorful, spotted eggs a very rare and prized delicacy.

Stringbok

Mount Cosmetic Skin *

Py’rai use surefooted Bok to patrol the uneven, root-gnarled pathways of the Rai. Before the snowmelt each year, many of them adorn their mounts’ antlers with Essence-imbued string, which they strike with small mallets to produce tones similar to a lyre or sitar. They often play as they wander, hoping their song will reach the ear of another, and inspire them to join in. The quality of their improvised performance is considered an auspice of their potential success for romantic pairing.

For the Py’rai, song is the highest form of worship. They draw inspiration from the trees, the flowers, and the animals that are the Goddess’s creation, and sing of them in gratitude.
