What we have in mmorpgs currently are errands that give you a bit xp gold and some small item The "rewards" and the difficulty of them make the difference as a concept. You, or you and your party, are on a path to accomplish something meaningful for the development of your character. Not kill 10 bandits that robbed a cart.
