Player/Node ran Casinos

Dice, cards, and other forms of gambling are already in the game. These are ran in parlors and taverns. However, what if you had the ability to open up a casino that added more to the game. During my stream yesterday we discussed this concept and people had some great ideas. Elven primary nodes would be able to open up magic slot machines (slots powered by... wait for it... magic), Ashes Bingo, misc games that can be designated by the owner/mayor of the casino as well as the primary race at hand. Dwarves could use roulette as they'd be able to craft the perfect metalic ball for the spinner, craps, etc.

I hope there is a thriving poker community within Ashes. (and poker)

Why not make this part of the Taverns? This would be just another way to make them into social community hot spots. Let the Tavern Owner decide 1-2 games that are primarily played in his tavern and build a reputation as the poker tavern for example.
  • Ooh I like the idea of each race having different games. You visit a city with a different culture so naturally their games would be different.

I’d love to see player-run casinos, but I can also see things getting out of hand fast without solid rules. If players figure out ways to exploit the system or scam others, it could ruin trust. Found an interesting take on related economy systems over at yeetblog.com that got me thinking about how devs might need to monitor these setups without killing player freedom.

I think it would be cool to focus the tavern -- perhaps through the tree? Some can be inns and focus on player housing, while others could specialize in a social/ parlor game space. This would allow them to adjust the tree for the freehold to be more specialized in that.

On top of that, there is the different cosmetics that can be attained to make it look less like a tavern stylistically?

edit (sorry for the necro - just sad I missed this originally)

Every time I've seen this come up in discussions for other MMO's the response is always something about legal restrictions related to online gambling and how it's too tricky to navigate without violating dozens of laws in dozens of legal entities (countries, state, counties, districts etc...).

Gambling doesn't belong in a game kids can access.

I wasn't going to comment on this since it's a 5 year old necroed post, however, this game is intended to be rated M for Mature. Meaning, you'll have to be 17+ to play. I.E. this isn't something kids should be able to access, and if so, as with all things, that's bad parenting and not anything to do with the developers or what they should be and should not be allowed in a game.

California, and it's JUST, fair, tolerant, and open-minded laws, WILL NEVER ALLOW THIS!!

Make it so if you're in California and try it a popup displays saying something like "This has been banned in your state, please reach out to your legislation" and call it a day lol. This is mostly a joke but something I wish more companies did to fight stupid laws imo. Kind of what the hub of corn did when states started banning corn.

The problem with this is now Intrepid have several hundred jurisdictions where they need to monitor online gambling laws. They need to monitor for jurisdictions that make this legal, but also for those that alter laws making it illegal.

    This is unfeasable.

There is a reason the casino that was coded and implemented in Archeage was never implemented in NA/EU versions of the game, while it was active in Korea.

We'll just handle the gambling ourselves, from within the tavern. Just like we'll handle the strip-clubs.

There doesn't need to be an in-game way of doing it. We can just sort it out ourselves.

  • I would at least have gambling arenas, the arena would have three tiers:
    -junior: 0% loot drop
    -master: 50% loot drop
    -champion: 100% loot drop

anyone who wins a champion tournament would come home with a load of loot, the area should have it's own storage
PvE means: A handful of coins and a bag of boredom.

There better not be STRIP CLUBS DAVEYWAVEY!!!! This is a FAMILY GAYM!!!

Maybe it can be a family-run strip club? Does that make it better?! :D

I mean, the addition of Tavern parlour games gives you the perfect opportunity to make your own wagers on the outcome. And, there's no reason you couldn't do the same with other aspects of the game. You could even take bets on whether or not a caravan will make it successfully to the next node. Even just as player-run things, there are a lot of possibilities.
