Not being a citizen of a node.

I find the idea of being a citizen of a node restricting to how I tend to play MMO games. I like to explore and move around a lot. I am wondering if I am not a citizen of a node can I still able to go into the node and use the services in that node to trade, craft, and anything else that I need? Crafting seems to be strongly tied to free holds and you cannot place a free hold without being a citizen of that node; does this mean I cannot progress my crafting if I am not a citizen somewhere?

Pretty sure you don't need to be a citizen to get a freehold.

Oh I thought you had to be a citizen of that node to place a freehold in that nodes zone of influence. Have I been misinformed of this, because that would be good news.

"Player Housing grants the ability to claim citizenship of a node." From the wiki under 'Node Citizenship.'

This looks to me that the housing (apartment in town or freehold outside of town) comes first, prior to citizenship, which implies you CAN have a freehold and not be a citizen.

However, after a successful siege, all of the freeholds in the nodes's area can be attacked for two hours. So I think your freehold can be attacked even if you are not a citizen.

Not being a local citizen will open you up to KOS for me. If you aren't contributing to growing our neck of the woods on your own, we will ensure you are still contributing a chunk of your gathered loot at least.

Any experience a player earns sends a portion if that experience too the bode that has influence over the location that the action happened in, bot to the node the player is a citizen of. Or at least, that is my current understanding of the system.

To the OP, you can progress just fine as a crafter without a freehold, and thus without being a citizen of a node. All you need to do is find someone that has a freehold with everything you need, who will let you use it all.

@FastLoaf Great question. I did not find much in the wiki about it, though others might be more successful.

What I seem to read is that most, but not all, node functions are open to non-citizens. You have to be a citizen to vote in a Scientific node election or to become a mayor in any node. It looks like node caravans will only carry node citizen materials. It looks like node quests created by mayors can be done by non-citizens. It appears that most routine node functions will be available to non-citizens but some 'type specific' functions may not - such as access to ALL the information in the vaults of a Scientific node. I am not sure about that.

Some of the more interesting/obscure functions that we don't know much about yet are just conjecture. Some node functions, like shrine services, may be restricted by religion and maybe citizenship as well. So all functions in a node might not even be available to all citizens??

Some buildings in nodes can be owned by social organizations, such as the Thieves Guild and Bounty Hunter Organization, so non-citizen bounty hunters might access them while citizen non-bounty hunters cannot.

This is a fascinating world we will be entering.

I'm very confident you will be able to use some if not most of the node's services even without being a citizen. This should include interacting with shops/stalls, local storage etc. Citizenship from my understanding will be desirable in a node you like to invest time in and if you are wanderer you may not really be able to utilize all the benefits anyways. This means that you want to have citizenship in high level nodes so that you can utilize the bonuses in a hub you will most likely be spending a lot of time in anyway (higher level node means higher level dungeons and resources will be surrounding it). Keep in mind citizenship in such nodes will be highly desirable and potentially in low supply. This provides further incentive to commit to and be invested in the growth of a node you are a citizen of and actually promotes engaging in sieges etc. You want the horse you bet on (i.e. the node you are a citizen of) to do as well as possible so you reap the most benefits.

Why would a node allow you to TAKE space when you aren't a citizen?
Citizenship has requirements and perks.

If this is how it works, that will be awesome and I will have much less reason to slay random people lol. I can instead befriend them and hope they stay local!

I just find it cool to bring in rare goods to a new place and see what they have for trade. It would be cool to be part of a trading group that travels the world and helps with the different needs of the area.
