Why Use Microsoft Edge Webview2?

I'm a strict Linux user so with the Alpha 2 imminent, I decided to try and get the launcher working in Steam and Lutris but both fail. In Lutris, it fails entirely without rhyme or reason. In steam, using ProtonGE 9.15, I was able to get through most of the installation and even got the launcher up. But then, when trying to login, it fails entirely because of the failure of Edge WebView2 which is only found in windows.

I understand that I cannot demand the development for Linux but a requirement on such untrustworthy software is questionable.

Yeah, Edge is infamous for a reason. It's just a lousy program and can't be trusted, especially when it doesn't have any unique functions needed for connectivity.

edge only exists to install other browsers...

I refuse to allow Microsoft proprietary software even in my home, let alone on my computer. Windows and everything it's built on is nothing less than spyware that you pay for. And I recently worked for Microsoft. So the launcher requiring WebView2 is pretty disgusting to see, considering the amount of money I've put into this project to support it.

    Bit entitled.

You think any other browser is really that different? Look up this saying if it does not make sense. "If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product."

Have you looked at a tiny 10 or tiny 11 build? Solves a lot of that.

    Wow.

If you aren't happy to have the product in your home, don't work for the company making it.

Bit of a poor reflection on you if you are so against Microsoft, yet were happy to work for them.

probably a sales rep at a Microsoft store, if they actually ever worked for them

I like how the OP leverages their financial commitment to the game when:

    1. We first learned that Linux support would be on the back burner way back in 2017 … most likely before they decided to purchase their Alpha-2 access.

    2. Being an Ashes backer means they’re simply supporting the game development. It does not mean they have the final say in development activities (including launcher rollout).

    Classy.

You're all going after the side points and are completely missing the main one. Microsoft is a deplorable company. I think some of you are missing the past tense nature of what I said. I no longer work for Microsoft and for those really that concerned, I worked in the government sector for SharePoint development.

ANYWAYS: The main point I was making is that I dislike the reliance on Microsoft-specific, closed source software for authentication. That's it. Some of you are taking this way too far.

I am on arch/hyprland and was able to get the launcher working by following along this thread

    https://forums.ashesofcreation.com/discussion/62094/linux-tips-tweaks-and-troubleshooting-thread

I am waiting for someone smarter than me to get the actual game working and as you would probably hate to hear am on windows for this game on the weekends for now it seems....

Bottles is much easier to manage dependencies in your wine prefix than lutris imo.

If you are not allowing Microsoft at all on your computer, your computer is less effective than mine is.

For example, you spent all that time trying to get alpha 2 working - I downloaded it and logged on.

Since your claims are essentially unfounded, and since webview2 is fast becoming standard for a wide range of applications, I really don't see why Intrepid should even consider changing.
