Stealing from players during node war and other pvp events

Last Sunday Halcyon declared war on Joeva (Lotharia). Both sides killed within either city's limits, which seemed fine for the guards and other NPCs going about their business. This didn't feel right but is not the point of this thread.
I tried looting an enemy within my own city, Joeva, to see what would happen. I went purple and got immediatelly obliterated by a couple of guards. This felt very wrong.
Why is it stealing to loot your attacker when you are both participating in a well-defined opt-in PvP event? Killing them didn't make me go corrupt or even purple, but taking their items did. I'd understand it if I wasn't a citizen at war, but not like this.
Same goes for all other opt-in PvP events, such as caravans, where looting and actually stealing cargo is completely okay but looting the other side's corpses has you go purple.

You should be able to not loot node war enemies without going purple.
Spoils of war, literally.
