i bought phase 2 but believe the PvP system may hurt the game at release

I am in my 40s. I know.. OLD. I have played so many MMOs. I burned out a long time ago on open world always on PvP. I am a filthy casual, I admit it.

I like so much about what AoC is supposed to have at release. But, I am not a fan of the corruption system. I want to flag PvP off unless I want to PvP. Actually nowadays I prefer the battleground type PvP. Get in, PvP, leave.

I do NOT want to be chillin farming mats and some griefer run up and start thrashing on me. Like I said, I have played MANY MMOs. Modern day and old school. . But even back in Everquest and Asherons Call days I dint like being attacked while farming.

I believe most MMO players in 2024 are far more casual than in yesteryear . Long term I think the game will suffer if PvP cannot be flagged off.

I predict in a few years when AoC is released it will have many players short term. Then a large drop off after 3 months. The primary complaint will be the PvP system.

Again, I will be testing in phase 2 starting in late dec. So I will see what I think.

If you don't want to play a game that allows for PvP to occur at any time, simply find a game that has opt-in PvP, this is not that game. Risk vs Reward is a core pillar of this games design, and part of the risk of adventuring in this game is meant to be running into hostile players competing for the same rewards and resources as you.

However as it currently is set for testing, it is pretty much opt-in PvP with the overtuning of corruption. But thats purely for testing needs at the moment.

Worry not. It won't hurt the Game any more than in all the other Topics which sounded "concerned" about what might hurt the Game at Release - and People will play it regardless.

This is the funthing about the Taste of People. You can never argue about it, because some to many People will always gobble up any Game anyway.

I am turning 40 next Year - so i can relate to pretty much all of this.

Sure. I "can" still engage in lots and lots of PvP - but compared to when i was around 20 - i tend to burn out faster regarding my Concentration.

Hourlong Battles will take all out of me. I think Sir Steven and his mighty Crew want to make for Example Node Sieges last Two Hours - won't they ?

This is gonna be good. Just not for me when i want to avoid a Headache.

I always get flagged now like Everyone else when i loot someone's Ashes.

Makes the Game a bit more spicey and fun for me. I know i did a naughty thing and People might come to send my Character into the Afterlife.

That is if they can catch and kill me.

this is EXACTLY the Reason why after Five to Six Years -> i finally quit Sea of Thieves for good. In that Game of all Games, i was never motivated to do PvP - and by PvP.

And for FIIIVE LOONNG YEARS -> my Brother and me on our humble Sloop avoided all kinds of toxic A~holes and People who live and breathe and play the Game only to try to piss off Others and to piss "on" Others.

I have enough of pissy, edgy Eight- to Twelve Years olds telling me over their Hotmics that i shall suck their D***'s because they are pissy and toxic and unable most of the time to sink me.

I am not sure if " ASHES " will have Hotmics,
but damn You sure have to deactivate and mute them when You want to play Sea of Thieves sometimes.

The Hotmic worked in our Favour because my Brother and me rolled the DICE quite often for the Win and to avoid toxic PvP Matches which could easily last half to full an Hour every single time.

this never happened to me until now -> in the Alpha Two. I am aware however this might change towards Release or after Release.

I think Worst of Warcraft suffers more, in a way.

People "are safe" 100% of the time if they want -> and You can notice this in their patterns of Behaviour sometimes. You have the No-Brainer Crowd which moves so stiff and mechanical - that You might mistake Players for Bots sometimes. (lol)

You have the "slightly toxic Crowd" which reacts annoyed when You have a social Interaction with them.

because they are used to fellow Players being like NPC's who never interact with them most of the time and can of Course also not "attack" them.

Lastly You have the Crowd who literally "BEGS" you occasionally to Duel them. Because they never have One-versus-One Matches - and in Battlegrounds Dozens of People usually fight each other at the same time in the same Location.

It is "supposed" to be that One, very Game of Thrones-like MMO - in which Players compete with each other AND fight each other as Armies if needed, for ingame-political Reasons.

And for the Thrill. And for the ever-changing Nodes on each Server.

You are essentially going to a pizza place and asking them to change the menu to a raw vegan buffet.

The core ideas of gameplay aren't compatible with what you want.

flagging pvp goes agaist the core principle of the game so it wont ever be added they have been very firm that they wont change their core pillars.

That being said the corruption system in phase 1 has played very little effect since it very harsh right now and is never worth it to go corrupt in the current concept. However it is over tuned atm cause they didnt want to much ganking happening in phase 1 where they dont have all the corruption systems in place yet.

NEVER. caravans are flawed a the moment because you cannot fight off groups of people out to murder you and nobody even tries to defend because 10g going from New Aelea to Miraleth/Desert nodes is not enough reward to pay for defence. constant nearby node respawn means constant fighting and its just not fun.

Random pvp is fine but the way the game is right now the corruption is so buggy and essentially ineffective. just store/trade your gear to a friend and run into a npc guard. corruption gone no loss cept 2 mins of xp debt.

the game as it stands is a haven for pvp griefing and it makes everything else alot less testable, let alone fun.

In the entire Alpha 2 thus far…

98% of players died to PvE / Environment
2% of players died to PvP

Have to be pretty sensitive to complain about PvP happening in a PvX game

Caravans are intended to be group content.

What is with all these solo players begging for an MMO to change into a single player game.
Can we please have one, just one, group based game?

all the anti-griefing mechanisms aren't even working correctly at this stage. we just have to test them when that happens and leave our feedback. but it's been a fun alpha so far.

IMO any modern MMO that expects to have broad appeal must have PvE-only servers. My interest in PvP has waned from significant to almost nothing over the years, and I'm obviously not alone in that.

Agreed, all viability in PvP in the game so far entirely depends on the ability to gather/process high rarity materials, craft high rarity gear, acquire the proper recipes for said gear, and advance the nodes to be able to do all of that in the first place. Though honestly with the current gear stats, its far more fun to PvP when everyone is max level and in common gear. High end rarity gear just turns into a quickdraw contest where whoever clicks first wins.
