Equipping My First Ax

Brand new total noob here so don't be too harsh

I just got my first gather quest and have to equip an ax. I can't equip the ax because I am not in a node apparently. I'm in the first little town you come to in the river region. Do I need to be in a player-occupied node to equip the ax or is this bug? I know, really dumb question but I would counter with kind of a dumb quest if I can't equip the tool in my inventory to chop some trees a few feet away. Thank in advance more experience Ashes Gods!

I remember from Phase 1 that the Crafting-Tools like Axes, Pickaxes and so on - seemed to have their own Slots. Not like Weapon Slots. But another Menu right besides your Armor Menu. Maybe you find it.

Pretty sure you should be able to do it in Lionhold.
If you have trouble, go to one of the proper Nodes nearby like Halcyon, Winstead, etc.

I had a similar issue. I was able to equip the ax in Lionhold, but then when I crafted the pickaxe it would not allow me to switch tools, saying that I needed to be in a node to do so. I logged out and logged back in and it fixed the issue. I was able to switch to the pickaxe.
