Scare me

Maybe I have missed it, but I haven't seen many models or zones in the game that make my skin crawl. I'd like to see some sinister/evil content. That being said, I really like the current art style and models I have seen in the Dev live streams thus far. Maybe the full day-night cycle will help add some spookiness to certain zones.

Joking aside, we haven't seen much of the underworld too. Dark places are easy to look creepy or menacing.
And that's where the Tulnar dwell.

I like the sound of this underworld. Looking forward to see what the artists do with it.

Spiders are always an effective way to give me the creeps and if one dropped down from the cavern ceiling on my head I probably would have to put on my brown pants.

I also have hopes they will make the place darker and more evil. The world is vibrant and colorful because the disgusting Tulnar have been hiding like rats and nobody else has inhabited the land. BUT, the more I think of it, the land has been inhabited by the local wildlife so there should be skeletal remains scattered everywhere, feeding pits, and larger than normal animals. Blizzard gets plenty of things wrong but whoever worked on the Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 atmosphere is worthy of massive praise imo. I find myself longing for that dark gothic atmosphere more and more as time goes on and new games come out that are as "pretty" as they can be. I'm tired of pretty.

I feel you dude. The darker/creepier atmosphere makes you feel like you are not safe within the game. It makes for great immersion.

@riwany Nothing wrong with that, but it is a big world. Don't see why we couldn't have a bit of both.

Most of the environments I have seen are all bright and shiny. From the RGB flowers to glowing rave nature of the under realm, I do not see it getting very grim in their design theme.

I doubt a third-person MMO could ever scare me beyond the jump scare that happen when a struggling healer can't keep up with health bars in a raid.

Honestly, I don't think anything that is played in third-person can be scary for me in the sense that it would make my skin crawl or trigger a real fear response.

Horror movies use things like slowly building tension and audio cues to build up to something being scary. They are also only scary like 1 in 50 "scary" movies for maybe a single scene out of a whole movie. That, or they just abuse jump scares. As an adult, "A nightmare on elm street" and "stranger things" both seem to be like just cool 80s movies with a horror aesthetic and not actual scary stuff.

I just don't know if this sort of stuff would work in a third-person game. In VR it might give someone a heart attack, but in a normal MMO I just see it as another health bar to beat on.

I am certainly not saying intrepid should not try. I just like the aesthetic that comes from scary stuff. The Hellraiser franchise is not something I find scary, but lord knows I love the aesthetics. If we could, get some Berzerk ass monsters in the game or something out of a Beksinski painting, that would be fantastic.

I just can't imagine being scared by something in an MMO. I would be beyond thrilled to be proven wrong.

I'm not sure if the Alpha has other biomes available but even if it does, they look identical and blandly blend together, disappointing. I believe that the current alpha map is on the west side of the official map. I do enjoy how it looks playing it and firmly believe the videos you are watching don't do it justice. It's BEAUTIFUL when you are in control and are able to explore anywhere and see the detail they have put into it.

That being said, I plan to go on the Eastern continent. The darker looking forest, the snow biome, being across the ocean to a desert...all of this just looks/sounds so appealing. I can't wait to see what they come up with and I do agree, the tropical beauty of the whole thing won't be as appealing if nothing will contrast.

There's that one Underrealm dungeon kinda near Drythorne that has tentacles coming out of the walls.
It's pretty creepy.
Alpha One, so lots of environment effects are turned off.
There's plenty of time left to make things creepy.

That pretty much sums it up for me. Going from a bright sunny beach and stumbling onto a dark cavern leading to god knows what. You're curious to find out what is there, but it also makes you second guess that it could be dangerous. A game that comes to mind is The Forest. I understand a 3rd person mmo can't build the same atmosphere, but I would like to see a bit more of that aesthetic.

A good example for those old/current WoW players out there would be the contrast of going from Goldshire to Darkshire. It definitely won't make you piss yourself, but it did feel like a more dangerous area.
