Transmog totally ruins immersion

In my opinion transmogrification detracts from the games immersion by breaking the worlds visual consistency. I believe that one of the core aspects of any mmorpg experience is the sense of progression and identity that gear represents. As an example when you saw someone on WoW with Warglaives of Azzinoth you knew that person was a real sweat. When players can just swap out their gears appearance it undermines the visual narrative of a character's journey and accomplishments.

What are your thought on transmogification?

Your stance doesn't make much sense.

What if you walked into that same player with Warglaives in Wrath? How would you know they'd ever gotten them unless they had the option to use them as their current weapon's appearance?

Transmog systems are only "immersive-breaking" if they include non-immersive outfits... and to be honest, if they do that in the transaction shop then it'll be achievements for that kind of stupid stuff as well.

And as Orrion said - a person can/could not just transmog into the warglaives. You had to earn them first. It was a great way of assuring that all that time and effort you took into grinding those warglaives did not go to waste, since you could use their appearance even after the weapons fell behind stat-wise.

Transmog is absolutely amazing as long as the company keeps their feet on the ground when it comes to the designs available in the cash shop. At this day and age I wouldn't play a game that does not have it. If I grind for a good looking set then I want to be able to use it even if I later on get a upgraded one with better stats.

If i can not even wear "what" i want - WHEN i want,

then why did i even give my best and all to gather it in the first Place ?

I still remember when during WoW Vanilla and Burning Crusade - i was partially sad because i couldn't enjoy the cool Looks of the Sets anymore which i farmed before.

I accepted it as a thought that it can not get helped.

But then Transmogs came in. I didn't knew that was possible before - but i loved it anyway afterwards.

Now,
imagine farming the Tower of Carphin Set/s,
or any other Set really which will be in the Game sooner or later,

and then You are either forced to part with it if you get an Item or several which are probably be better, stronger, etc.,
or when an Expansion for the Game comes out or something,

you know something that just leaves your former Items in the Dust stat-wise - and these Items belong to the Sets you wanted to wear since a long time. Or in Ashes of Creation's Case -> since forever. (lol)

This would suck.
A LOT !!
Imagine you farm a Set for Weeks or Months or so until you finally have it complete and have a cool Look which you wanted,

and then you get forced to part with it again for better Stats or so, because there would be no Transmog-way to put your favoured Skins onto other Items.

I absolutely despise transmog, but it's a necessary evil in a modern MMORPG.
Especially one with a cosmetic cash shop.

I love transmog. It lets me look how I want to look, rather than have to sacrifice that for stats. There's always a Best In Slot, so when everybody has that, everybody looks boring and all the same. Transmogs give us some difference.

Transmog is needed because not everyone will prefer the looks of their endgame gear. It's not much of visual a progression if, to you, your gear regressed visually. Now applying any looks to any item is an issue, a fighter with plate armor should not look like they're wearing cloth. It should also take some effort to obtain the transmog you desire, not just head into the cash shop and 1 minute later you look like your dream endgame character.

I like transmog for following reasons:
1. Wear what I prefer that looks cool and fits my role that Im playing.
2. Be able to appreciate some pieces for longer than a few levels.

I disslike transmog if:
1. Mage light armor class can look like tank class.

Transmogs don't break immersion in a High Magic Fantasy setting.

I understand the concern about transmog breaking immersion, but I actually think transmog systems are a great addition, especially in modern MMOs that include cash shops and cosmetic monetization.

The reality is that most games today sell skins, costumes, or appearance items to keep the servers running without making the game pay to win. Transmog gives players a way to personalize their characters without affecting gameplay balance. It also helps avoid that ridiculous clown gear phase where your stats are great, but your character looks like a disaster.

Plus, visual identity in MMOs is no longer just about showing off your gear score. It’s about expressing your personality, creativity, or even roleplay style. Players spend hundreds of hours in these worlds; letting them look the way they want without sacrificing performance is a win-win.

That said, I do think there should be limits, like only allowing transmogs from gear you've earned or from official skins, to keep a balance between freedom and prestige.

At the end of the day, immersion is subjective. For some, immersion is about the world looking consistent. For others, it's about being the character they imagine.

Signing into the forums after months of lurking just to say how I feel the opposite is true:

With no transmog, the chances of me having to walk around looking like Bozo the Clown are higher because that particular gear set is BiS for my spec/role. No thanks.

Transmog also gives value to collectors who want to play fashion endgame or just have cool looking shit.

I dont like transmog systems that let you blend over different armor types though, ie: wearing Cloth transmog while the actual gear is Plate. Not a fan of that.

I think you should be able to make your character anyway you want but some people have super bad taste and sometimes games add ridiculous transmogs...

For example a wood elf should have armor akin to their environment, trees and plant insignias maybe even moss covered. Not a rainbow winged unicorn suit. (looking at your guild wars 2) that for example should not even be an option.

I feel like Cultural armor is a necessity if you intend to keep the flavor of races. As well as racials.
