Looking for the best GPU to run Ashes of Creation

Hello everyone,

I'm planning a GPU upgrade focused on getting solid performance in Ashes of Creation, and I’d love some advice based on my current build.

Current Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-9700KF

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 UD

RAM: 64GB DDR4

GPU: GTX 1060 Ti (looking to upgrade)

PSU: 500W 80 Plus

Case: Mid-tower with good airflow

Monitor: 1080p (but may move to 1440p in the near future)

I’m looking for a GPU that can handle Ashes of Creation at high settings, preferably without creating bottlenecks or requiring a PSU upgrade. I'm open to suggestions from both NVIDIA (like the 30 or 40 series) and AMD, as long as power consumption is within safe limits.

I’ve been considering the RTX 4060 Ti, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Anyone with similar specs or experience—what would you recommend for the best cost-performance ratio?

GPUs are becoming more of a "buy as much as you stand the price pain" but running 1440p should allow for more options when it come to price & availability. The 500watt power supply will be a limiting factor and will need to upgraded as well, 750-850 watt minimum for mid-range systems but higher if you want a top end supply for future upgrading.

You typo'd in the most ambiguous way possible. Were you recommending 1440 or 1080? And while you're at it, what does "more options when it comes to price" mean? Not disagreeing, just figured I'd ask for clarification.

It's fairly a tough decision. I am struggling with it myself.

The 4060 range was never impressively cost efficient (It can't really produce useful AI-scaling results, nor is its raw power strong enough for AAA. You end up with tolerable 1080 mid performance, but you're guaranteed to have to upgrade if you want to play any game released a few years later, and it will likely have no resale value, so if you have more money available, why go through the headache and risk of stuttering?)

4070 through 4070 TI Super had some cost-efficient options, but those are all out of stock and being phased out, i.e. will not be reproduced because 5070 exists.

The 5070s are acceptable, but as always, either overpriced or out of stock.

As it stands, I will probably wait a little longer, and then either pick a decently-priced 5070 TI or the equivalent new AMD (9070 XT), which is apparently pretty great in this generation. The XT version in particular is fairly priced. The AMD 9070 standard is a little overpriced (both team red cards released 1 month ago) and it may or may not be worth waiting a bit for the lower one's price to drop, if that's your preferred price class.

If you can still find a 4070 Super or better for a price that's lower than those options, that's also completely viable.

While I see where Caww's analysis is coming from (basically because cards are just getting very expensive, so you have to ask yourself if a higher range is at all worth it to you) I also kinda disagree:
There are just so many demanding games these days that require extremely performant rendering methods to cough out acceptable framerates. And they will only get more prevalent, as developers rely more on AI-assistance in antialiasing and generating frames, and things like raytracing in taking care of physics effects.

Because of this, I really think if you can at all bring yourself to cough up the budget, and you have to buy a card within the next 1-2 years, you should probably spend a minimum of lower midrange prices (5070 standard or better) if you don't want to regret it pretty soon.
I say this as someone who's been happy with a 1050 until now.

If you could somehow wait 2-3 years, maybe entry-level cards would be worth something again by then.

Thank you, fixed typo. Since OP is not looking to go 4K for a screen resolution as part of his upgrade all the mid-range GPUs will accomplish what he is looking to do. The "more options when it comes to price" just means OP will not need to suffer the indignity of grossly over-paying (when available) for one of the higher-end GPUs (think nVidia) and can consider AMD GPUs since they are heavily focusing on the mid-range price/performance market segment.

I would still like to draw attention to the OP about the 500 watt power supply and suggest budgeting-in extra money for replacement (I know it hurts to replace a functioning piece of hardware, especially since all power wires will need to be removed and re-routed with the new supply but 500 watts really won't do the the job, even the plain 4060 has a recommended minimum of 550 watts)

It takes a little time to load but besides that it's pretty good actually. I did a 10 hour stream of ashes this last weekend and mostly 60 fps, only struggled in between logging and initially when going into big areas.

Hey there!

Ashes of Creation is shaping up to be a pretty demanding MMO, especially with the Unreal Engine 5 switch, so it’s smart that you’re planning ahead.

Given your current specs and 500W PSU, the RTX 4060 Ti is actually a great choice. It's efficient (around 160W TDP), doesn't need a PSU upgrade, and should handle 1080p ultra settings easily, and 1440p on high settings with DLSS or FSR when needed.

A few alternatives you could consider:

AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, slightly more powerful than the 4060 Ti in some cases, and great for 1440p, but draws ~230W, so PSU might be a limiting factor.

RTX 3060 Ti, solid 1440p performer, but power draw is higher than the 4060 Ti and it’s getting harder to find at a good price.

RX 7600 XT, lower cost, solid at 1080p, but won’t give you as much headroom at 1440p compared to the 4060 Ti.

If you’re planning to upgrade your monitor soon, the 4060 Ti gives you the best balance of performance, efficiency, and future proofing without touching the rest of your rig.

I take back most of what I said in this thread after further research. Prices are so far off the MSRP at this point, for the same price you're paying now, you could basically get a full class higher a year ago. Radeon looked like it might break with that for a second, but that was only immediately after launch.

It's a terrible time to buy a GPU. If you absolutely have to, either go with used or make sure you figure out whether the Nvidia or Radeon in your price range is the better value.

By sheer virtue of how percentages work, buying a lower range card will force you to overpay less flat money than if you were to buy a higher tier card right now, so I guess I do condone 4060 TIs after all, but only if you absolutely must buy a card right now. Preferably, I think you should try to wait until the new batches arrive, the AI demand drops a bit again, and prices normalise. If you can buy and later resell a used card for the interim that might also be a way to go.

I still don't recommend buying a lower-midrange card for Ashes if you want a smooth experience (though fast CPU and RAM will be just as essential; probably also having an m.2 drive.) So don't just buy anything to have a new part in your PC, if you can avoid it. Wait for better GPU prices, and upgrade to midrange or upper midrange, if you don't want to regret it.

Of course, if you somehow can snag a (trustworthy) deal for an RTX 5070+ or Radeon 9070+ range card close to original official MSRP, that's a fairly worthwhile deal that I would take when you get the chance.

TL;DR:
Your best options are to

Somehow snag a 12GB 5060 TI when it releases
Get lucky to find a deal for a 5070+ or 9070+ close to MSRP.
Wait 1-to-6 months until prices normalise. Could be longer, though I personally don't think so. Uneducated opinion though.
Buy used in the interim, if you can find something tolerable. Focus on upgrading CPU and RAM first, if it helps your bottleneck.

imo, if you want high end go nvidea, lower end is AMD. I wouldn't bother with something like a 4060 cause it only has 8GB of VRAM. if you don't want to spend much I would maybe look into an Intel Arc A770 it's just as cheap with 16GB GDDR6. even the AMD alternatives only supply 8GB. And 18gb models are starting around 550$ compared to Intel's 200$

Ashes is usually utilizing around 9~10gb of VRAM at any given moment.

Edited cause after doing research there's like 8gb, 12gb and 16gb versions of this thing -_-

Depending on where you live you can check BestBuy several times per day and maybe score a 50 series nvidia card. It seems smaller areas have a better chance because many of the cards will make you pick up in store only, so make sure you put your zip code and store in. I scored a 5070ti a few weeks ago by clicking the "see details" and going through the short process and getting it into cart for store pick up. I also had a 5070 in my cart for $550. As of right now, there are 6 or 7 5070's with "see details" in my area.

Obviously you'd need a power source upgrade but honestly you are kinda due for one anyway. Find a nice EVGA or Seasonic gold rated (10+ yr warranty) and on sale.

A bit late to the post here, but just to temper your expectations, you won't be running at High with good native FPS with that CPU, no matter the GPU. The CPU is a real bottleneck for most MMOs, including Ashes.

My old PC is a 8700K CPU (overclocked) with a 1080 Ti GPU. So one generation older CPU, and the 9700KF is probably at best 10% faster. I have 32Gb RAM. Even on low settings the CPU struggles with many players in the area.

My newer PC has a 7800X3D CPU, and for a while I had to use my 1080 Ti GPU because my 4090 connector melted. Using the same graphics card on the two different CPUs was night and day performance wise. I could actually play on High even, on the 1080 Ti, but I did get some FPS dips, so I lowered to medium settings usually.

What is the brand and model of the PSU? For example, if it's one of the quality Seasonic-made models, I would trust it even at close to max watt loads. If not.. well, a lot depends on the quality of the PSU. It really makes a difference.

<Firstly, i have not taken the time to read all posts>

I upgraded from the 1060 6GB and a Ryzen 7 3700, to a 4070 super with a Ryzen 7 5700x3d. This was the limit of what i could afford. God help us all with the ongoing GPU market.

The issue is i think AoC has a lot of optimisation ahead of it still. I can run the game 'okay' at 1440p. I still run at medium graphics and dont have a steady 60fps. I have limited my fps to 60fps as well, just to stop my GPU from trying to run at 100% all the time and make extra fan speed and heat.

I find running between low and high graphics settings actually makes very little difference to the FPS which i why i think optimisation is an issue.

So its hard to suggest what is a good card for this game to run well - without spending all your money.

You need to upgrade the dated CPU that you have the I7 9th gen is not going to be pushing the new GPU as it should. I have a i9 12th gen with a 3080ti and it runs great. If it were me I would look at a CPU/MB/GPU upgrade for what I could afford, A 14th gen i5/i7 with a 3060/3080 would do you good.
