Roads are too smooth

ShaylaruShaylaru Member, Alpha Two
Feels like the world has a very nice lived in aesthetic and scenary is genuinely stunning in some places but every time I come across a road it kinda breaks the immersion with how linear it is, it's got too much of a “clean” and “well-paved” look to it...
Paths look overly polished and uniform, almost like they were dropped in, is this a requirement for making the terrain easily changeabale and adaptive for the future? if not, could we see more rugged and rough looking paths?

They showed their plans for the Roads system in a livestream a while back. They started off as little more than dirt tracks, then over time became proper actual roadways. It was pretty cool.

Theres a bunch of different roads/paths and some fit very well but the one posted above just seems so perfect :)) this below is more of what I had in mind for it

Here's a picture of an ancient Roman road for comparison.

When it comes digital art, imperfection is perfection. So something looking too clean is going to look odd. The actual texture pattern they're using is really good (go first person and walk the road, max out your settings if you can, it looks better if you get closer.). But what throws it off imo is the stones aren't aligned to the direction of the road. A minor thing and mostly likely not worth even addressing ever.

Completely agree, love the example image btw, I never thought to consider the way the stones are facing :))

pop this under esthetic polish for later, Unreal 5 v. (whatever) has much more potential

Left Side is worlds apart superior in terms of Immersion/Looks, in my humble opinion.

Again. I see everything until now as simply Placeholders.

Totally get your point! The roads do stand out with their uniformity, but it's worth remembering that Alpha 2 is still a work in progress, what we’re seeing now is more about testing functionality and performance than finalized aesthetics. Intrepid has already shown they’re very receptive to feedback like this, and we’ve seen amazing improvements over time based on community suggestions.

I wouldn’t be surprised if more rugged or varied terrain options get added later on to match the organic feel of the world. This team is all about immersion, and I’m confident polish like that will come with time. For now, let’s keep exploring and helping them shape Verra into something truly immersive and alive.

I agree it looks too smooth and.. "procedurally generated". It doesn't blend with the environment and feels out of place right now.

I like to use the Word and Term " Placeholder " in cases like this - and i am convinced it is very fitting and appropriate here.

Plus -> We the Players -> the Vanguard, Settlers, etc. -> COME TO VERRA after it was at least abandoned for the likes of 2000 Years or so, right ?

So that means nowhere anywhere near would the Roads be intact like the Placeholder Roads we have in the Riverlands since late October 2024.

They would be far more worn down. To the state where they would be non-existent in some Places.

Looks odd seeing stone roads in the middle of nowhere. In a city yes. But should just be dirt.
