Going to make this very simple. My time playing mmorpg's is extensive. Started playing MUD's, UO, EQ, AC, DAOC, WOW, etc.

The game is NOT new player friendly. Starting area is confusing and by level 4 or 5 you've been doing the same confusing shit for hours. Ok, let's try crafting, more confusion. No clear tutorials, no bag space, killed by random star mob, frustration, frustration, frustration.

Global chat is a cesspool. No clear way to search for a guild as chat functions like a 90 year old at bingo.

The game is pretty. /end

I'll keep trying it, but it looks like an epic fail at this point to me. Asheron's call beta was more polished than this and it was 1999.

What you've stated is felt by many (and commented on repeatedly) however the P3 phase of the Alpha is about to start Aug. 4 and promises a much broader showcase of what AoC is trying to build. A lot of people have their fingers crossed that something cohesive will be provided and allow people to actually enjoy testing the real systems (no more place holder band-aids). Check it out in a month and we will all know more.

Yes, a beta version of a game is better and is deeper into the game's development as an alpha version of a game. That is in fact true and factual.

From what I've heard of gamedev, first player experience is usually done/poilshed at the end, because by that time your team is at the peak of their game making abilties, so you can put their skills to the best use (i.e. presentation of the game in its first minutes).

We are so fucking far away from getting to that point in development that, imo, it's almost useless giving feedback on this. And I think that Intrepid's attempts to even address this right now is a total waste of their devtime.

We'll have our EU server back soon, and then Global Chat can become useful again :)

...you realize this game is in early alpha, right?

You realize this game has been in Alpha coming up to 4 years right? The Alpha excuse looses it's luster if it just stays in Alpha for years to come. I really hope Alpha 3 is addressing things like UI, and Questing(Alternative way to level solo}. They are addressing the crafting, which is nice.

The original poster is not wrong. The game's strongest point is that it is pretty.

I agree, European cesspool is superior to American :D

I sense the OP is a bit grumpy here. I have been there with UO and early days of some pretty niche MMOs. The experience isn't that bad, especially for alpha. I strongly recommend joining a guild.

    Not really.

The earlier alphas were technology tests, not tests for the game.

sounds like some in here are disappointed in the lack of progress Intrepid's made. I actually wouldn't disagree with you.

but my point (and I'm surprised this needs to be clarified) is if you're comparing an alpha state game where the content and systems have yet to be fully implemented with the beta of another that's nearly feature-complete and your conclusion is: "the beta game has more polish" you've added nothing meaningful to the conversation and showing you don't understand game development.

the beta period is literally for applying and finalizing the polish you're pointing out is absent

Currently I believe they're hurdling through Alpha phases based on a pre-determined time line but aren't actually hitting thr milestones required that they set for themselves to advance phases. The phases aren't that meaningful if the objectives aren't achieved the phases advance as if they were. I wouldn't expect a meaningfully different testing experience for maybe a year or longer.
