Quick question from a possible new group of players.
Simple and short...Is this game PvP enabled all the time as in you can get ganked out in the world just minding your own business or inside of a dungeon? We would like to know before we plop down $100 each to join the alpha.

Yes.
The goal is to make this unlikely but right now the plan is that it will always be possible.
yeah... "This game isn't for everyone...and that's OK"
The way it is set up right now, this rarely happens. If you choose not to fight back, they cant kill you without going red. If they go red, a mark appears on the map and everyone can see that someone is red. If they die red, they drop 3 items. Dropping 3 items can be losing dozens of hours of work and is almost never worth whatever you might be killing people for.
So technically you can be killed in the open world randomly, but practically it never happens outside designated open PVP regions.
Best response, take my like. I’d like to add something: just like in Archeage, when players turned into pirates and entered cities, everyone would join forces to kill them. I think something similar will happen here if someone kills you in a spot and goes red-flagged.
It's not that cute and dry, there is allot of protection with the flagging system. Attacking people not flagged for PvP has some very deep impact for doing so, even opening themselves to losing gear. There are other protections as well.
We will also have rotations of where PvP will happen. There is allot more to this game and there is a space for PvE players but just know, PvX games mean PvP can break out at any time but the game should be balanced for that. It isn't yet. IMO Ashes is still worth playing in your situation but as stated about, its not fir everyone. But this game is just a sub price. So subbing for a month when it launches is an easy entry and not much of a gamble.
To most PvE players that just want to log in to a game and hang out with their friends, it in fact IS that cut and dry.
If one game has a chance where this could happen, and another game has no chance, there is no question at all as to which game players like the above will play.
Quick question but it's a loaded one. Before I give you my two caps I'll link you the wiki. Because Ashes isn't going to be something like anything else we can compare it to and we really don't know what it'll 'feel' like the wiki is your best bet to get a good idea of what the game aims to be.

Now my opinion. Short answer, Yes, you'll be able to be ganked at any time. But it'll be controlled/gated by corruption penalties and wars. So if someone just murders you they get corrupted (if you're not flagged for pvp.). If you're at war with that person they get no penalty (regardless of your flagging).
I think only 20% will be instanced content. So most dungeons will be open and subject to pvp risk. I personally don't like "open" dungeons because it's a sit and pull grind fest. I prefer dungeons that are either like a diablo random generated map or a wow progression dungeon, but there's a lot that can be done to improve those too. The old school EQ mob grinding spots are fun for a bit, but the game needs more than just those, which is all it really has right now.
Also disclaimer huge disclaimer, it's Alpha. So much is missing. Judging the game now is like judging a hamburger by taking a bite of a cow. Also Steve is pivoting on some ideas that do involve the concept of PvX. But how this will play out is far from clear.
