Best Of
The ever-beloved FTUE
For some reason Intrepid are trying to create a good FTUE at this point of development, instead of doing it at the end where they have the most experience and the game is at its best, so I decided to give feedback on what they're trying to do.
Imo the ideal starter path is smth like this:
By the end of this path the player would have a full set of gear (tier 2 would probably be fine here), they would've gone through the entire crafting process, so they'd be able to make a more conscious decision on what profession they wanna stick with (the limitations of that choice should also be presented during the quest). And the player will be right around lvl10, so that they can start their citizen journey.
The process would still have some grind in it, because commissions are inherently that. It would have artisanry (which would show that you get xp from it). And it would show the combination of the two resulting in direct progress of your character.
I know this is a fair bit handholdy, but considering the depth of some of the systems in Ashes, I think some handholding is fine right at the start.
P.S. WHOEVER AT INTREPID HAD THE GENIUS IDEA TO PUT A GOD DAMN RESPAWN TIMER OF ONE MINUTE ON THE STARTER WEAPONS IN THE PORTAL ROOM - you're beyond evil, sadistic and cruel.
Imo the ideal starter path is smth like this:
- npc at the portal says "ah, I see you are *insert player archetype*. I'd recommend getting this type of armor and behind me there's a rack of weapons you can choose from"
- that dialogue window then has a 3-way choice of armor types with a "recommended for your archetype" addition on one of them
- once you choose one, the npc says the same thing they do rn "you can go to the either side and then talk to this person there"
- once you get to the first town, the continuations of this quest now reward you with recipes for a full set of armor that you chose
- once you get the mount, you're pointed towards commissions, which are not random and are instead tied to the locations of your current main quest (either direct one or neighboring spots)
- instead of random bs loot boxes, commissions reward you with special currency (and of course some glint)
- that currency can be used to buy crafting mats from a local vendor
- those mats should also be dropping from the commission and main quest mobs
- at around lvl5-6 the main quest should direct you to the artisanry process that's related to the armor type you chose
- npcs at those stations are related to the main quest and can direct you to spawn points of mats required for your recipes
- they also suggest picking up some artisanry commissions from a board that's right next to them, whose commissions are also related to the mats you're about to get, rather than rng ones
- there should be 4 spots in the relative vicinity of the starting zone for any required mat
- the artisanry npcs can point you only towards one of the 3 (at random, to spread people out a bit), so that people who already have more knowledge can choose the 4th spot
- all the quest and commission rewards should cover your crafting expenses (ideally including a possibiltiy of 1-2 deaths with full inventory tbh)
- by this point you should be around lvl8-9
- last part of the quest chain gives you a recipe for each of the weapons you're most profficient at (it checks your weapon skill tree status) and tells you to where to get the mats/gatherables for it
- once you're done with that, the quest tells you about the local nodes, their status/lvl/etc and sets you free
By the end of this path the player would have a full set of gear (tier 2 would probably be fine here), they would've gone through the entire crafting process, so they'd be able to make a more conscious decision on what profession they wanna stick with (the limitations of that choice should also be presented during the quest). Re: new player doing tank/cleric duo with friend, good gathering/crafting skills that would mesh well?
You can level all crafts/gathers to 10. You can only upgrade so many. So as you start just do it all, both of you level all your gathering skills, no reason not to. split your processing and crafting as you need or want. Probably focus on heavy armor so gather copper. Pass it all to who will be the smith. Have the smith process the metals too. The other can pick what ever. You won't cover everything as a duo, but securing your gear will help a lot and would be a fun way to play. With the changes don't expect many gear drops, which is a good thing.

Have the Cleric do gathering, more specifically mining. The Tank should probably do the combinations of Processing Stone and metal.
This should allow you to gear up because that duo can go into more dangerous areas safely, it doesn't matter that your kill speed is slow if your goal is to get money/progression by reaching gathering spots.
At low levels you can easily try out many different artisan professions, but those are the ones I suggest pushing the most, and they're pretty fun in nearly any area.
Good luck with the testing.

everything with alts.
you need stuff from different professions to craft soemthing so your gathering profession doesn't matter too much, unless you plan to make alts or have friends who can give you mats or craft for you. eventually, you will only be able to max out 2 professions.
but usually fishing and farming go well with cooking. picking flowers with alchemy, making some armors too. minign goes well with almost anything, scribing, alchemy, making weapons and armor.

As a reminder, if you come across bugs during Alpha Two testing, please report them to us in-game using /bug

- Settlements are back on track. They’ll now level and behave as expected instead of refusing to grow like that one stubborn houseplant.
I really, really dislike having Interact3 forced for my mount on a separate keybind.
Please add the option to put it back to where I can mount and dismount with F again, without sacrificing the other interactions.
Yeah it's just another button, but it just keeps annoying me. It was so nice before. I know, people got too close to nodes or NPCs with their mounts and they sometimes got the wrong interaction (skill issue?). I think it's fine to have the new interact3 option too, of course, if people prefer it like it is now. Maybe it's the same issue for Interact2 and 4 as well, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
The simple solution is to allow us to bind the same key to several or all the Interact options, instead of now where it unbinds F from Interact if I try to use F for Interact3.
Edit: to not sound too grumpy, I think you're doing a great job otherwise for P3

Re: Question about potential life of AoC after sunset/decommission
It seems pretty pre-mature to be asking about EOL for a game that hasn't even gotten into beta yet. They aren't even thinking about that.
Your response seems pretty dismissive and condescending. I’m not suggesting Intrepid SHOULD be thinking about end-of-life now, but I don’t see harm in asking the question. Communities that care about game preservation have raised this kind of concern for many MMO's in the past, and asking early could help signal that it’s important to players. When would be the “right” time to ask? After the game sunsets, when it’s too late? In my opinion, no question is too early if it sparks meaningful discussion and there is no such thing as a bad question...
It is not dismissive. Game is not even launched. Who would know now?
I assumed reps from Intrepid would chime in. This question was meant for them, not the player base. Unless someone in the player base already knows and can fill me in.
And how would they answer? They are focusing in building the game in full crunch time. You expect them to stop, have some meetings about what to do with the game whenit fails. Call in the investors to see how they feel about this

I just started getting this today, didn't have this issue prior to Alpha 3 launch
Full Screen Windowed mode, low graphics settings, Nvidia RTX 2060 with reported 93% VRAM usage in Nvidia X Server Settings
Try the hotfix branch of proton. Worked for me.

Re: Gathering Contests and CCable Greens
Yeah, I'd be fine with that. I'm almost sure all the "pvpers" will flip out over this, cause it's pretty much an instanced fight for pvers, but I do agree that this would provide a less stressful way to compete for mats.Arya_Yeshe wrote: »So:
- Claim and you can claim only one resource at a time
- Keep gathering until your claim timer runs out, then the claim ends and can claim it again
- If others claim the same resource, a duel starts
- If you refuse the duel, the resource gets locked for you
- If you wander too far, it's treated like losing a duel, the resource gets locked for you
- Win a duel and a few seconds are added to your claim timer
