Character question : What will character creation be like?

What I love about MMORPGs is the character creation and customisation (I get very attached when I can think of their own story), so what do you think character creation will be like? Free reign or more directed?
Thanks!

  • No matter if it is simple or extremely detailed.

    I will undoubtedly find a way to spend my first couple of hours in there.

    I feel like alot of mmo's underestimate the importance of a good wide range character creation.
    For me a well made character creation with alot of options for you to make your character unique is important.
    There is nothing more annoying then having clones walking around it takes the feeling away.
    I feel like Black desert is the character creation model all mmo's should model after.

    - Whilst their character creation is really great, I think BDO limits a lot of things in terms creating a distinct and unique looking character. They have age and gender limits, and only the human race to choose from. When you're creating your character, there are certain ways they want your character to look like, and whilst that's immersive, it also makes you look like everyone else who's playing the same class that you're playing. What I wanna see in Ashes, or what I hope to see, is a similar system to the one BDO has but with less limitations.
  • I would like a great amount from customization, but I also hope they will give us more then just the standard human recolor character models for races.
  • Customization similar to ESO would be great, there was so much that could be done :) I really like that you could be really tall/short, old/young or fat/skinny, those where really traits that set people apart :)
  • I think it is important a player can connect with the character it is playing,
    Otherwise players often retire the character/game fast.

    Aside from a deep character creation,I'd love to see post-creation transformations.
    Like one of my favorite games had a class advancement quest that turned your mage into a lich like this;
    <img src="http://www.gamer.ru/system/attached_images/images/000/442/771/normal/heroesiii-nicolasgryphonheart.png" alt="http://www.gamer.ru/system/attached_images/images/000/442/771/normal/heroesiii-nicolasgryphonheart.png" />

    Perhaps this whole idea of the corruption system could allow your character to incarnate
    upon death ,and re appear as an evolved version of itself;
    Each time you "rise from the ashes" your experience and deeds unlock new appearances
    in a few categories like "pure" or "corrupt"
    A new tattoo,a new hairstyle,differennt pupils,a body upgrade like more pikes or scales,nicer wings
    (races have yet to be seen)
    You are free to take your character back to creation whenever it ends in ashes..There is so much in the title of this game
  • I'm hoping it's detailed. BDO was good but like another poster said, very limiting and misleading - I ended making characters in that game which looked kinda the same. ESO was good in that you can make characters that have a medieval feel, rugged and not too pretty.

    Give me rugged strong male character face and body models including full beards, more beard options, dishevelled hair (no man-buns please) and hairy chest options.

    Please don't go the way of pretty people characters (except maybe the females). Don't really want to see anime looking pretty boys striking poses while fighting mobs and look like they shouldn't be really lifting that heavy 2handed maul. Hopefully they won't go down that route being a western mmo.
  • I heard that the games character creation system will be similar to Black Desert Online's. So of course, the means; Millions of hair styles, body sizes, and noses. I just hope that they have a similar feature to move a section of hair around, like Black Desert's. Black Desert has a option (sadly only for the females) that a part of the hair can be moved around and made into something unique, so most of the hair will not be just presets with a different color. I hope this game has a similar feature and that the males can also move their hair around :)

    Why not have both? Lets have options for rugged beards and scraggly hair alongside the options for man-buns. In my opinion, the more choices there are, the better. Real people vary greatly in appearance, and tend to have a number of different hairstyles and body types.

    l find it a bit one-sided to request that the male characters look rugged and muscular for the sake of realism, while exempting the female characters from the same thing. The inconsistency of it has been a point of annoyance for me in some games, and has always seemed like pandering instead of an actual attempt at realism.

    For this game, my hope would be to have either multiple choices available for body types or some sort of sliders. If there are body-shape sliders though, it might be a good idea to limit those to realistic proportions. Aion, for example, was one game that went too far with the body sliders, basically allowing for immersion-breaking things like bobble-head characters. The more hair and facial feature options there are, the better. Versatility in terms of the age-range of the characters would also be nice.
  • BDO offered a great deal of nuances, but no overarching differentiation except for the hair.

    If i had a choice I would like to see something in between BDO and Aion. Something that offered more than tiny details you won't see unless you zoom in or look at from the side, but falls short on the ability to make something completly redonculous like a tiny fat bellied, sticking out shoulders, paper thin arms creature.

    In the end tho, I would be fine with something simplistic like presets. Using 10 minutes in the character creation from which 8 are used finding a name.
    We already know that Steven likes BDO character creator and wants to offer a great deal of customization, what that means exactly remains to be seen.
  • Not sure about BDO I had a much better time with the GW2 character creator. Ever try to make a black guy in BDO? Its a horrid experience. Plus I need height scaling and beards.

    Guild Wars 2 had a much better character creator as far as range goes. BDO was great for women but terrible for men.

    Oh? Try making a black male without a bald head. Then you will see how bad the system is.
  • Well, i think a creation system should have some limitations, so it doesnt screw the player immersion, In the case of Aion you could make some ridiculous characters, in BDO the creation was noticeable because of the graphic engine, at least i would prefer something like Bless character creation.
  • I just hope for a character creation system makes all the players and NPC's look unique. Having lots of options for how your character looks is awesome.
  • Nothing is confirmed yet, but it has been said that the character creation will be comparable to BDO, which should be great.
  • I personally want to see everything be possible in this game. From the very beautiful(I know this is subjective) to the very ugly(ditto). Nothing should be locked to any specific race or gender unless there is a very good lore reason to lock it. Elves in most games are clean shaven, is that because they cannot grow facial hair or is it a Cultural preference?
       As for the BDO system  I liked it but it had way to many restrictions like gender locking. Do wizards only gain their power when they are old while witches seem to die before they get old? I really dont want all these restrictions in Ashes. Allow me to make a short,fat, ugly human or a tall(for a dwarf) svelte beautiful dwarf.
       I understand that some of the features can be perceived as grotesque but have you all been out in the world their are a lot of folks that are beautiful and grotesque out there.
       So give us a wide range of options and allow us to create whatever we want. We need choices for facial hair both beard and mustache. Maybe even sideburns and eyebrows. all of them individual choices and not locked into sets like most games do.
       We also need to have many choices for tattoos and adornments. All of them allowed to be individually placed.
       Lastly we need to have a way IG to change things like Hair color and beard length. Add a salon to the hame where we can change things like our adornments and jewellery visuals.
  • I watched the Q&A with IS and Lazy Peon and Steve said (paraphrasing) it was going to be pretty epic.  Basically will able to costumize everything.
  • They also said there may be a possibility that the character creation tool may be released prior to game release so people can play with it to get their character look ready to go for release. This was only a thought though remains to be seen if they will have the time to do so.

    This would indeed be awesome, as many of us like to spend even several hours to get their characters to look just the way we like.

    And once the game releases, we want to be able to get in the action instantly, and not delayed by several hours.
  • It'll be like that feeling you had as a kid on Christmas morning, only better.
  • Would be great if they did make this happen would give me something to do while beta is down, save the settings for live so you can get to the action straight away.
