A question about alts.

I play Archeage and am really interested in AoC. In Archeage, a player can create several alts and create huge amounts of profit from doing so. I didn't like the unintentended idea of that in Archeage, and was wondering if alts could give a person's main character an advantage over others in AoC, and if so, is there something that would be done to prevent that abuse? Just curious, Thanks.

  • Keeping crafting materials tradeable while keeping players reliant on each other for those materials is a difficult task. Alternative characters almost always make people self-sufficient in regards to crafting. I have yet to see an MMO effectively pull it off. I'm not sure how they could solve the issue in a tasteful way.
  • I love alts. They allow more self sufficiency. They prevent monopolies on crafted goods, they do a lot of great things in an MMO. Archeage is a seriously flawed model to look at as an example.
  • I'm not a big fan of alts and I hope they find a way to reduce the level of self sufficiency you can achieve with alts. I really like the idea of players creating markets between themselves and relying on each other. As far a monopolies go, I've theorized on how I could create one in AoC but, even with alts, it seems impossible with the constant fluctuation in supply and demand. As the devs mentioned; one day the market might be booming for a raw material, the next day it might tank. This is going to really strengthen the dependence on other players.
  • I believe the entire system of gathering/processing/crafting in AoC will be so complex that you'd still have to collaborate with others. Even if you have one alt that does the gathering/processing and another one for the crafting, you'd still have to transport everything from A to B with caravans and therefore need people who protect your caravan.

That being said, I do think it's fair that a player who puts the time and effort into leveling multiple alts and their artisan classes then can produce or trade more efficiently than someone who didn't bother to do so.

But I've never played ArcheAge, so I don't know exactly what abuse you're refering to.
  • I like the idea of alts so i can try other classes and races but dont like when a game forces someone to make alts to be able make vast amounts of money more then a person would with a single char so hopefully it doesn't go to that extreme.
