Freehold Speculation

In the video "Ashes of Creation - Nodes Part Two" they had shown two equally sized plots of land isolated from the normal game world to represent the size of a freehold and what they plan to allow players to do with them.

Somethings that I've seen in the example look as if they are placed in what seems to be a grid, given how they are spaced. However, other things do not seem to be following a grid at all. For example, the wagons seem to be facing diagonally even though the larger items on the plot are facing either north, south, east, or west. The crops seem to be evenly placed in rows and columns, but if you look closely at the plot with the horses you'll see the crops unevenly spaced out. Perhaps it is a mixed system?

Another thing that came to mind is the possibility of a template system. It just seems like the perfect kind of environment to test out such a feature. Two plots of land side-by-side in perfect squares with nothing around them would be a good setup to see if housing templates mess up. Not saying that they were testing some kind of template system, but they could have been. It would be cool if we could save a freehold and place it down again without needing to redecorate everything. I've seen games where people were too apathetic to redecorate their homes, so they just max out their ability to gather resources from their land and pay no attention to the finer details.

Comments

  • It seems like we will get a 3x3 grid for the freeholds and id assume we would get a choice of what to place in each section of the grid so say if someone just wanted a farm it could be mostly crops etc. Id like to hope we could personalise each section of the grid though be it from what items and direction they are facing but it wouldn't surprise me if itd just auto generate whats there from what we pick to be placed in that section of the grid.
  • I don't believe that it is a 3x3 grid myself. The placement of things seems too off of such a grid. The windmill is really questionable in that regard, as it is almost on a 4x4 grid. The thing about that though is that none of the other buildings are even close to that scale. That leads me to believe that if there is a grid it is much higher in the number of divisions it has than a 3x3.

Those stone walls and lantern posts of that windmill plot seem to be very organized. They all seem to be rotated by 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°. The walls are following almost a straight line. Whoever designed that plot of land was either very good at keeping things orderly or they were assisted by a game mechanic that they were testing. The other plot though has the wooden fences not 100% straight. Has me scratching my head a little.
