For all those who have just bought Alpha or Beta access with the kickstarter

Before you go into any kind of Alpha or Beta test you need to understand one very simple thing:

THE GAME IS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT, AND THEREFORE IS LIKELY TO BE BROKEN!!!!

You are there to TEST the game (hence why it's called an Alpha/Beta TEST) for the devs and help them discover bugs and exploits that they wouldn't be able to find on their own, as well as give feedback on various systems to make sure they are balanced and serve their intended purpose.

YOU ARE TESTING THE GAME, NOT PLAYING IT!

If you have no interest in helping the devs test the game, DO NOT ENTER THE ALPHA OR BETA TEST

/end rant. Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest, as there are a ton of people who don't seem to understand the concept of an alpha or beta test.

  • Let's be real here. It's both. People will be "playing" the game and "testing" it.

Frequently people who go in only to test and don't enjoy themselves put in less time which actually leads to less feedback. Then again, as you mentioned, this is a testing period and people need to be conscious of that.
  • Yea, I will probably only be messing around with mechanics during Alpha myself. Don't want to spoil too much for myself regardless of the fact that it's unfinished.
  • Let's be real real.....it says December of 2018 so that means some of us will be dead before beta even arrives....

100% agreed. You can't intentionally go out looking for bugs and glitches, you gotta play it like its already official and let it all come out

Well spoken! I'm very much looking forward to testing/playing. We are going to help make this game amazing!

True. It's more about what you do when you find the bugs. When I'm just playing a game and I encounter a bug, more often than not I will ignore it and move on. However, when I am testing a game, if I encounter a bug I will try and recreate the bug to find out what caused it and write my findings down to pass onto the developers. That is the difference between playing a game and testing it.
  • Beta comes in Dec 2018? lol
  • Yea this will be my first ever alpha test so I will be kinda noob to the concept but agreed. "Play" the game and when you run across a bug or CTD, go back and try doing exactly what you were doing to re-create said bug/CTD. If it repeats, viola! Report to devs, if not, consider it a minor bug for now. First priority = helping the devs make the game better, secondary is having fun. Now once it officially launches.....first priority = fun all the way.
  • Indeed.

I hope folks don't jump to conclusions. Alpha testing is a great opportunity to help involve yourself in a games development. It can be time consuming to write all of those reports, but it can have a profound impact in the long run.

Looking forward to seeing what Intrepid has in store for us.

  • See you all in P2 Alpha!
  • I will be happy to test the game. Thats why I am backing this project. This is the third MMO i have backed and it is the only one that looks playable at the pre pre alpha stage.
  • I'm just going to play the game and give feedback as i come across things, i think that's the healthiest way to go about it.
  • Broken? You mean like when I had to stand in line for FFXIV phase 2 Beta just to finish a quest which I stood in line for 5 dam hours. lol Yea I will say Alpha and Beta will be broken. That is normal. That is what testing is for.
  • Agreeing with this post. Funny thing about this tho is that the last time I tried to report a bug was not too long ago in Revelation. I clicked on something that specifically mentioned reporting bugs. I click and I'm taken to a website fully in chinese lol.
I just say that to say, hopefully they make the process of reporting bugs and glitches as seamless and ez as is reasonable

This is true, but I feel some people just don't get it that the bugs encoutered need to be reported with a description of how it occurred.

Too many thinks by pledging the alpha they get to play the game sooner and so they try to abuse in official launch what they've learned in test phases instead of trying to fix the bugs.
  • There's some universal things to look for in a alpha like bugs and such but a game like ashes that's trying to bring in new ideas I think there will be more ashes specific things to look for like

    1. How will leveled nodes effect new players: If a starting node becomes a top tier node will new players still be able to find monsters their own level to kill? will brand new players have to worry about getting one shotted by a world boss dragon? This is something I plan on exploring (assuming it's not obvious one way or the other) durning the last few days of the alpha phase by rolling a new toon just to see what the world is like from a new players point of view

    2. the pvp flagging/bounty hunter/ trade caravans: will these systems work as intended? will the pvp penalties be to much or not enough? will the reward for killing bullies be good enough to get people interested in doing so? will it be to difficult or to easy to defend a caravan?

    3. will it be possible for one or two super guilds to ally and just dominate everything making the game unplayable for anyone not in the super guilds like in a survival game ( this is a really big concern of mine given the systems aoc is implementing).

anyways thats a few things I'll be focusing on durning the alpha just off the top of my head.
  • +1

    Well said!!

    **cheers**
  • from my point of view it does not matter how much time they take to develop it as long s game is playable . Also please find the robot farmers in these tests and report em to start a good game without gold sellers

Sorry to waste your time but I've seen the same said for probably 100+ games over my last 15 years of mmo gaming. Posting about it isn't going to stop the inevitable tide of whine and forum posts about it.

I commend you for trying though =)
  • AND ALSO....
..dont forget the game will be incomplete and subject to change.
So dont go running from forum to forum saying....'This game is so crap and so broken'
Its supposed to be. You are there to help iron out the flaw, break the game and test each game concepts viability.
And out of that break and viability testing generate a viable, hardened game.

It will be exciting, but not always fun and often frustrating.

    Otherwise. Good luck and Enjoy
    Much envy.
