Late-game sandbox?

I've played MMOs off and on since EQ1, but I never got involved in a true sandbox MMO. What kind of appeal do these have for late-comers or players who took a long break, once society within the game is pretty well developed? It seems like the first few months are going to be a vastly different game than when the 5 major kingdoms are established and most land is developed. I know linear MMOs have a similar problem; leave for a few months and come back vastly undergeared. I'm just curious how this format compares.

  • i know ill have this problem, bue to work there are times i cant play and since i travel a lot my account will be still. But ill make my living as a fisherman or a traveling salesman :P
Hopefully the game is more skill based than gear based, or atleast balanced. Atleast in pvp.
  • Hopefully the end game content is dynamic enough to keep people entertained. Maybe the best way to look at it is that when civilization reaches its highest point, that's when the real game starts. Player progression =/= civilization progression also. People will always be remaking characters and trying out different classes/races. Hope the siege and destruction of a node sort of serves to "reset" the balance and progress of players in the game. There'll also be expansions too.

Also check out this quote from an interview with the creative director:

  • The thought of leaving the game for a week for whatever reason only to find the whole society fell apart, merged, was overthrown, or environmentally effected in some way, the next time you log in potentially. Is such a fuzzy warm feeling.

If players get bored with the current situation, then its for them to decide the change.
Not the thumb twiddling periods between typical MMO content patches.

But if AoC is creating it's own "themebox" terminology then it sounds pretty good to me.
  • I think a lot of people are under the impression that once the nodes are built up there will be no more progression for new players coming in. However, Steven has said on a number of occasions that the resources in the nodes will be limited, meaning that you could start off in one particular node, and build a city around it, but then the resources in that area run out and you have to move to a different area. So I doubt the world will stay static once it has been built up, but will change over time and therefore give an opportunity for new players coming in to make an impact on the world.
