What excites me the most about AoC. How about you?

I had AoC tagged since December last year as "something to watch" As the Kickstarter approached, I took a deep dive, liked what I saw, and backed.

And do you know what exited me the most? The concept of nodes. The concept that, through combined work, people -- who aren't necessarily guild mates or even known to each other -- will create a space that improves over time. And, of course, if that space is threatened, they will likely come together to protect what is "theirs". I love that. I love a mechanic that sees people having a legitimate and interesting reason to come together.

Oh sure, the game will have its murder hobos and people who are like, "There's another player!!! I must kill them!!!" like they think they're in an FPS, and that kind of stuff is pretty tedious. But the whole nodes thing -- which will sometimes involve fighting other people, so don't get the idea that I don't like PvP by any means -- is going to be a wonderful, wonderful thing and, pretty much, the whole reason I decided to back this game, period.

What about you? What most excites you?

  • node system definitely.
i like how this game seems to walk away from the pointless grind (i sure hope so) of 40 k mobs just to get an item or lvl.

what excites me also is the possibility to just run into the wild find a secluded spot and just start building away.
create my goblin army!!! YEA IM THE NEW DEMON KING
    ow wait is that possible?
  • I love that we the players will have the freedom to play as what we kinda want with 64 possible class combis, and affect the world in our own little( or big) way each and every time we log in; node system, events and all.

A living pseudo board game of players, mindsets and hive minds.

I'm also super stoked about what pets I can hunt for as a summoner or tamer (whichever that class will be when live), and being a bad-ass monster in special events and leveling their abilities up.

    *snort*

Last but not the least, I get to RP as an Orc, and rip some limbs off random stuff when I get in that mood.
  • Player housing
  • <em>Nothing. </em>

    -
<em>Edit: I'm waiting for the combat, and looking forward to see their plans on <strong>balancing </strong>class combinations that sounds useless, such as Bard/Rouge.</em>
  • I too love the node system and that people get to govern their cities through various ways. It's going to be a very interesting thing to experience and I cannot wait...but I must.
  • What excites me the most is are the countless possibilities that can occur, dependent on player interaction with other players, and the world at large.

As, I'm sure many have stated before, recent mmo's have catered too much to players who aim to be these super heroes, within their own private universe, and then trying to display that dominance in selective pvp settings. That's just my opinion, and I'm not knocking anyone, if that's their style. But, I would prefer at least a few mmo's that diverged from that linear way of gaming.

If Intrepid truly delivers on their promises, then the way they structured their world would actually invite actual socializing, within a game that was originally intended to be social. Go figure. The technology, and implementation may be new age, but the concept of mmo's becoming social again is returning to old school roots.
  • I'm looking forward to the crafting. In other MMO's I have played, I can craft gear, but not necessarily "endgame" level gear. Being able to compete as a seller of useable gear at any level ensures a healthy economy for crafters and gatherers that I'm quite appreciative of. Plus being able to potentially customize my crafted items will be a nice touch that will allow crafters to make a name for themself.

I like the idea of the nodes, as well, but even above that I'm glad to see a slew of possibilities for class builds.

    Oh, and pets :D
  • Most games I come across are centered around instanced content, with most games that are centered around open world content being from the Korean market. I'm waiting for a game focused on open world content that is made for the western market that also has open world PvP. A few games are in development that I have an eye on, but I do like the concept players dedicating themselves to a zone and then claiming citizenship for the zone they've dedicated themselves to. Having players pour a bit of themselves into an area sounds interesting to me. Uniting for self-preservation is a much stronger motivation to protect something than just uniting under a faction or guild banner. I hope they can make this game work.
  • How the world develops and factions that form. I want to see how world PVP and wars are waged. If they actually make the system work i will be able to enjoy lots of popcorn while watching a great show.
  • It's a combo of things. Housing needed to be defended with PVP coupled with a tier up system.
  • Nodes are, kind of - I guess - the big thing about the game that impacts everything else, so it's hard to not say 'nodes.' Virtually every other feature of the game either springs out of nodes, or would be less interesting without nodes.

    So, nodes.

But after that, I think I would say the economy. I am hoping that it is deep and integral enough that well-organized guilds will be able to use and benefit from the economy to not just generate wealth but also generate gameplay. The risk/reward of trade and the control of resources will be a constant concern, if it's implemented as roughly described. I like the idea of two guilds raiding eachother's caravans and having to gather guild members to defend them, to defend resource nodes, etc. Even before it comes to sieges and outright war.

And honestly, I just like feeling like my actions are changing the world, even if it's just dumping a caravan load of iron into a node that needs it, or something.
  • for me it's that guilds matter. the mechanics they're going for with Ashes makes it sound to me that having a strong guild that works together with a solid plan will be far more important then in any mmo we've had for years. For the first time in a long time a game isn't ignoring the second M in mmo
  • I am also excited to see different metropolises arise. Say you have become a citizen of a riverfront Metropolis but there's a metropolis in the mountains who are Military and yours is economical and they want your space...gonna be fun.
  • The thing that more excites me is the Dev Team formed by persons that helped to make all the Everquest saga. For me this is the most important thing to trust in this MMO.
I'm sure they will do a great MMORPG with the original essence.
  • The node system sounds very interesting. I am also very greateful for the communication going on right now. Communication is so very important (no communication definitely has a negative effect for games).
  • For me personally its the housing system, the wars on the sea and on the ground. And the different possibilities when you build a node on a certain place.
Hopefully there will be titles for how many kills you have in PvP
  • Nodes is one of the first things I heard about this game and it certainly is a very interesting concept. The other thing is monster coins, that just seems wicked. I'm not 100% up on it but from what i've seen, using a monster coin through an event to take control of mythical/monstrous creature to wreak havoc on the populace has me excited, and I don't normally even like pvp.

That is actual part of why I backed Ashes, I don't normally like pvp.... I like the idea behind the flagging system and I think it's time to get into an mmo that has this style of pvp.
  • What I'm looking out for the most is the player housing. That you can build in the world it self but still have a option to buy instant housing if there aren't any avaible space anymore. In AA you could only build in speciffic places in the world. And if you where to late the spaces were gone. In this game you are not going to have that problem. What also nice is that you can own your own shop, tavern, .... and sell things in it. The node system also excites me a lot. So far I have never seen this in a MMO were the world changes because of the player. And for the rest I'm also excited. I'm looking forward to seeing more video's about the different aspects of the game.
  • I'm really excited to play in a guild with family and friends. I can just imagine the phone calls...

(me) "Uncle Joe! Where are you?"
(Joe Schmo) "At work. I am a doctor you know."
(me) "How fast can you get home?"
(JS) "Uhhhh, 10 minutes, but I have this surgery coming-"
(me) "That's great, but we're being raided by Goon Squad. They're jealous of our 1337 l00tz."
(JS) "... I'll be on in 10 minutes"
  • The only thing I'm interested in right now, is how will this game run on my PC, compared to other MMORPG out there. If it will have the same game engine bottleneck that is unable to use CPU and GPU to it's potentail and therefore have unstable FPS just like every single MMORPG out there .... then I probbably won't be interested in it.

But they get that right, and deliver us with a game that will run at stable 60fps on decent PC, no matter what scenario you throw at it, I will commit to this game and grind my way to the top.

I do like all those new things that they are brining to MMORPG world, but what good is all that if it will run at 20fps on boss fights, large PvP fights etc. It just wouldn't be enjoyable.
  • For me is the fact that node system and the whole player freedom (housing, deciding form of government of a metropolys, siege enemy cities etc) gives a whole new (and needed) depth to player interaction. Not only what you do have impact on the world, but also interacting with other people become something on a whole new level, given also the fact that you can attack whoever you want.
  • I like that Steven's a gamer so I expect his ideas come from playing games, that add something new and entertaining. I hope AoC is enjoyable.
  • Definitely looking forward to sacking other nodes/castles. That and Bacon.

    this!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Just the freedom. I fully plan on making a band of mercenaries, taking gold for pillaging trade routes or even taking down small towns for clients. Or just for ourselves. We will be known and feared across the server. Mark my words.
  • The fact its an MMORTS rather than an MMORPG
    In my eyes anyway.
  • What caught my attention originally was the Node system. It was something different (in essence) and I like to keep an eye on things that have possibilities of being different. Though normally in my own experience it keeps me from by excited because many more times than not, the vision failed to meet the "hype", and you realize that money you use to help support the project... Money that could have gone to bills or repairing your 17 year old car... went to just another game that won't really go anywhere.

So, I watched, then here came Kickstarter and I waffled on it...
Then I watched the kickstarter video. I heard what Steven had to say at the very early part of the video and went at last "I'll bite." Why? Because he echoed everything I felt as well.

That is what truly excites me right there. A man with a vision, that matches what seems to be my own desires, and having the same feelings I have about MMORPGs today. If he can pull this off. If Intrepid can really pull this off. I will probably be one of those people who will support this game till its dying days.
  • I'm hype for a lot of things about this game. The fact that I can own my own place and farm is neat. I'm hoping I can get a plot for a farm and my wife can get a plot next to mine. She can do taming and I can do farming.

I like how only certain areas will have certain resources so it forces trade. It seems you will actually be able to make good money if you like to gather and you'll have to transport your goods and defend it from attackers.

I also like how certain nodes spawn certain events and dungeons. As the sphere of influence grows you unlock new content. That's pretty damn hype! I hope the devs can pull it off!
  • There is so much I don't know where to begin. I guess the lore?
  • I was looking at this game a while ago and didn't bookmark it. Forgot the name and couldn't find it. A friend found it and I went right into backing it.

I am looking forward to the Nodes and making choices that change the way the world looks. I've wanted that for a long time and its really going to be epic. A group of friends and myself want to work on being Crafting/trading/economics. For our Node. Where we go from there is still up for grabs but we are really looking forward to it.
