Bots

*Note that English isn't my main language I tried my best to not make any mistakes but I am not perfect. Also if there are previous threads that I couldn't find please to tell me and I shall remove this one immediately*

Something we've all seen destroy mmorpg's are bots. Since a big part of AoC seems to be around resources gathering it's inevitable that some people are going to make bots. I want to know how is this issue going to be dealt with. I hardly could come up with any ideas to ban bots as fast as possible since I hardly know how they work. Since the game creators are gamer themselves I hope I won't ever come across any bots but is this really possible?

If anyone know more about bots, how they work and if there is a way to automatically ban those bots without banning any players feel free to speak up I want to know more about these since they have been a real problem in the last mmo's I've tried.

  • This is an MMORPG fact - There will always be bots. Yes, there are bad, and good ways to deal with them. But the reality is that there is no way to 100% get rid of them. It is a sad reality, but hopefully Ashes will deal with them properly before they ruin the economy. Have trust in Ashes, after release I assume they will have someone or a team of people working on the issue if it is bad enough.
  • You can have simple algorithms to detect bot-like behaviour, such as farming the exact same spot for literally hours, but there are limits to this kind of program, so more often than not it requires verification from human GMs. The Devs plan to have active GMs who will monitor the world and have the power to ban suspected bots and gold sellers. Having a system that automatically bans accounts that it suspects of botting would cause a lot of issues, so having that human verification is necessary.
  • Bots will destroy a games launch. That and gold sellers. Look at Wildstar. That games launch was riddled with bots and I have a feeling it was a main reason to its downfall. It inst totally dead yet but it is definitely on its happy way. Of course there are other factors, but.

Point being, a games launch is crucial these days, when there are so many MMOs coming out (granted most are shit) there is really no reason for people to stay in a game that is unplayable due to bots and gold sellers.

I have some hype for this game but we will see...,.

Glad to know they plan on having active GM's hopefully the subscription also helps reducing the amount of bots there could be. I hope they don't let bots take over it's one of the biggest issues for me in mmo's.

Well, when it comes to gold sellers in sub-based games, a lot of the companies that sell third party gold do their farming and advertising through hacked accounts. More often than not if your account gets hacked usually it's fallen into the hands of a gold seller. Now of course the devs can implement safeguards to protect our accounts, but at the same time we bear a lot of the responsibility to make sure we protect our accounts. The devs can put in all the safeguards in the world, but if you give your account details to some stranger on the internet, you have only yourself to blame.
  • While I agree with you that it falls into our hands. I do not have enough faith in gaming communities for them to do anything on their own to prevent their accounts getting hacked. The best the AoC team can do is implement a mandatory 2-step verification process.

That in itself will help a ton.
  • The problem with GM's policing bots though is there generally are too many bots for the GM's to deal with across all servers, but on the other hand if you automate the banning of bots more often then not innocent players can and will be caught up in those ban waves. Aion had huge issues with their automated bot banning tools and they banned probably more legit players then bots. The sad part about it was they never admitted that they made mistakes when they banned innocents they just told you well we'll let it go this time but next time your perma-banned, only to get back in game to see all the bots that were there before still in the same spots running the same loops over and over. So you need a bit of both with one checking on the other to make sure your getting it right the first time.
  • Won't they typically end up being PK bait anyway?

Account safety/security protocols and things like SMS linking would help with stolen accounts, getting used for gold selling spam and the like.

If botters want to pay a sub like the rest of us..then it can't be that bad until they caught and banned right.
  • BDO has a great solution for gold sellers with a filter you can personally set up with key words that autoban them from chat. You just keep updating the word list as they try to go around the filter until they are no longer able to advertise.

this is a rly good system.. yes!

also best thing is to not be able to send gold to other players.
  • I think if they have an easy way to report it that would be cool. Say if three people report a player they are suspecting of "bottling" the game should log them out and send an activation email to them to enable them to log back on. Or the game should teleport them to a jail for 24hrs to keep the role playing aspect alive. If I suspect someone of botting I will usually try and initiate a chat or something. If they are just running from mob to mob without stopping or acknowledging me then I will report. I know it's not foolproof but player responsibility should play a roll to some extent.
