AoC is a franchise...

I was watching a recent chat with Steven and a YouTube channel I'm not familiar with, so I've already forgotten the name.

In the chat, Steven said AoC is designed to be a franchise. My ears perked up at that.

What do people think that means? I would presume fiction/novels at the very least. What else could it be?

A media franchise is a collection of related media in which several derivative works have been produced from an original creative work, such as a film, a work of literature, a television program or a video game. The intellectual property from the work can be licensed to other parties or partners for further derivative works and commercial exploitation across a range of mediums and by a variety of industries for merchandising purposes.

Based on that, I'm guessing they'll start with the game and expand according to demand. I would say books, maybe a film, and more games,

A comic book/graphic novel would be good, now I think about it.

It would be an rather easy way to make plot for books, since most of the time people wouldn't now where its from due to the nature of the node system. Everyone on server A might recognise the plot in book 1, but not in book 2 since its from server B etc. Could be fun :)

Mister S is a big RPG/table top gamer like myself.

I expect some sort of third-party (based on DnD or a similar system) RPG game.

And you know what I am in.

Also throw in some codes for cosmetic only fun items too? I think they have some big plans and surprises over our 2-3 year wait.

Well you know what they say, "history is written by winners" xD

But yeah with that statement i asume they have plans to expand into books/comics etc.

One of the rewards for the $10,000 pack is a D&D game with the devs set in the Ashes world - practice, maybe, for a new tabletop RPG or potential D&D/PF splatbook?

A book is a record of characters endeavours in a meaningful world.
If you had the engine, the recorded history (logs) of any server could be printed as books.
100s of books unique to each server.

Starting at the base level of lore, is very intriguing to me. Even the origins prior to stepping threw the portals could have individual worlds and back stories. To me it looks as though we all could play a roll in building the lore.

Books, boardgames, merchandise, spin off games and film.

Hate to mention it but basically hoping for the same as WoW has done probably.

Steven Sharif is a lifetime gamer and avid D&D player. He's gone out and invested the spoils of his own success as well as his time to creating a new world. From what I can tell, he is 100% all in on this project and expects Ashes of Creation to become more than just a video game. He is creating new fantasy canon that will be contained in books, in game lore, quest lines and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a tabletop RPG game as well.

Miniatures, maps, lore books, rule books, all the stuff you need for an adventure Role Playing Game.... dice sets, could even go costumes, particularly adult ones for Halloween, Mardi Gras, Cons.

You *know* for a fact there will be fanfic of this game, if it works out as it's supposed to.
If not books themselves, atleast the players will write stories recounting the tales of their server, will be amazing to see <3

There will be something like some main characters (NPC), a main city, a main story to make the books about, and your choices as a player will affect what happens around the main quest not the main quest. So there will be no need to print 100 books

I think that there will always be a need to escape into books when you can't get to a computer etc etc.
Though you are right in some way, e-books might be the better way to go.

*Ponders starting to make some merchandise of my own*

I wonder how much an extremely limited franchise might be. Say. . . Um. . ok, I can't think of a small grouping that wouldn't be small enough to make them bucket loads of money :)

Fiction/Novels would be a start. Pretty exciting stuff.

They also did say that their focus is first the game then perhaps a franchise in the future.

Different genres of games set in the aoc universe. Would be interesting. An Ashes card game or mobile game. Or an action RPG in the world of Ashes.

Just like everyone else has stated - comics the whole shebang.
I get the impression that for Intrepid, Ashes will be their prime focus. I don't think Intrepid will be working on other titles. I think Ashes will be their baby and they will do everything to make it a great success.
Franchising the game will help generate revenue in the future and create a stronger community imo.

Since Wizards of the Coast killed off my beloved Forgotten Realms novels last year, I can think of several authors who are well versed in shared IP world settings that I'd love to see take a crack at AoC.
;)

I think many feel like this but given the title of thread I suspect that it's only a matter of time until you get it. :)

so lore can be flush out like how WOW is now with movie , books and so on

This means I need to work my character somehow into the lore... maybe become a legend and well known so I can get a RootedBane action figure with karate chop action!

Expect a multi-player RTS based on node development and capture like a reverse WOW. Instead of starting with RTS and developing into MMORPG, they develop the MMO and get into strategy gaming.

Sounds like it could be a tad bit confusing or lack substance unless they release books / comics all in the distant past of the world so that all servers can remain canon to the story.

Anything written in present time could be confusing with multiple alternate timelines depending on what server they base the story on.

Imagine reading about the great Volcano City and being like... Uh... that city kinda never took off?
