How would you like dungeons to be?

Hey guys, I wanted to hear everyones thoughts and opinions on how dungeons should be done.

Me personally I enjoyed Everquest Dungeons, Open to all. Set up shop in a camp spot with my group, Possible Trains were always fun, waiting for a group to wipe so you can take their spot was always good too.
I just really enjoyed the community and how it was open made it seem like a real world.

Im not a big fan of instanced zones, 5 guys go in run thru, get ported out, run thru again... takes out the feel of actually being there. Knowing there is 100 other groups doing the same thing.

Your thoughts?

  • One dungeon that has always held a special place in my heart was the catacombs in DAOC. Many groups could go in and the place was HUGE with a hell's kitchen down deep. You even had to kill mobs to get inside. I spent so many hours there listening to demons laugh and watch trains of wraiths and winged Incubi go by. ( I actually hated out leveling that dungeon) OH! and then EQ2 had several. The Haunted Manor with the zombie family as bosses at the end of the forest trail was one in particular I loved.( if I remember correctly, you had to kill mobs in the cemetery outside of the manor and one random mob would drop a key to the front door.)
  • Yep I remember those as well, That was always a blast, Finding a way in and fighting your way out.
  • I liked how Skyrim, and the whole Elder Scrolls did their dungeons. May be do a few simler to that?
  • I like the Everquest concept that you are talking about, but the main issue I have with it is how long it could take to wait your turn to run the dungeon. I personally would enjoy a mix of instanced zones and the Everquest style by making a fair number of teams be able to run the dungeons at the same time. So for example, have 5 teams with a maximum of X players can run at the same time while each group has a wait queue of when their team is up. This could also help players make more friends due to people who would want to add people to their party while they wait for the dungeon. This mix would make the experience more memorable and personal to me rather than running around until I find a random party or tackle a dungeon with a few friends.
  • I mostly just want random mobs. let us players figure out on the fly (unless we have a guy rogue to sneak a peak for us) what type of mobs were fighting. Is there a healer? Is there a mage with high dps but low health? Is there a mob who might mute our healer? Are there traps and if so where and what type? these are things we shouldn't know ahead of time even if it's our 10th time running the instance.
  • For soloing I would like there to be procedural generated caves and underground ruins like in oblivion/skyrim. Not that they're created randomly but I guess it could be done that way. Maybe a difference style for each region.

Then I would like hand crafted huge group dungeons you can get lost in for hours. If there's dungeons that take 5-10 min and are really small I won't be pleased.

It would be nice if there were puzzles to complete to open door ways and get into hidden areas. All persistent for everyone. Non of the everyone doing there own thing.
  • I like a combination of dungeons, some instanced, some open. What I would really like though is for instances to scale according to group size, allowing groups of a sizes within a certain range (say 4 to 8 members) to get the same satisfaction of completing some hard content :D
  • I liked the way RO did dungeons, they were just normal maps and bosses could spawn anywhere on their specific map. You'd go in with 2 people, you'd push your way down through the dungeon bump into others and maybe party up, you'd go further in and be minding your own business while slaughtering the dungeon denizens when all the sudden OH HEY DOPPLE, HOW'S IT GOIN- x_X. Had to stay on your toes at all times.
  • I'd want dungeons to be instanced (prevent zerging and griefing) with hard boss mechanics. They've talked about PvE leaderboards so it could be a good way to do competitive PvE for those that want that.
