Character Proportions, Scale and Animation

One of the things I think Black Desert did better than any other MMO is the character presentation.

Of course it has an amazing character creator, and the interaction with the world is second to none (the sitting and the leaning and the climbing and the jumping and the grabbing and the crawling and the kneeling and the rolling... !)

But one overlooked aspect of this is the character scale, and more importantly, the proportions.

The BDO characters just "feel" right in terms of how their body is scaled with the world, and in proportion to itself. The size of the head, the limbs, proportion to the torso... it's very realistic and well done.

In watching the AoC videos so far, I'm super excited to see things like parkour and climbing, which indicates the character locomotion will be taking cues from Black Desert and other great games!

But the one area I feel might be lacking (and I realize it's not even really pre-alpha yet!) is the character proportions. The mage in the original video, as well as the rogue in the most recent. It feels like their proportions might be slightly off, though I can't out my finger on it!

Head too big? Legs too short? I don't know. Something is tweaking me though!

For now this is only feedback based on what we have seen, we of course have no idea what the Intrepid gang has plans for :)

  • Funny you mentioned BDO proportions. I actually feel their heads are too small and legs too long (reminded me of horses). :D That said, I actually like playing games with chibi art with bubble heads, so it could be just me.
