Ship Customization

Hello,
So I am really excited about ships, I love the idea of high seas battling and commanding a crew......but also exotic ideas....like a ship being a Inn.
Will we (and maybe not right off the bat) be able to customize our ships? sails? hull? armor? cannons? crew quarters? kitchen? cargo hold? brige?
yea I am a girl that wants a nice fighting ship but also would love a ship that doubles as a resturant/inn just as much.

  • I'm assuming we will, but I don't remember seeing them clarify it. They probably will during a dev blog or something. If they did say something, I'm sure someone will jump into this thread with a link to it.
  • I sure hope we can customize our ships. I would love to be able to design my own pirate colors and fly them on the high seas!
  • OH YES EVEN FLAG CREATION!!! JUST LET US GO AT IT!!! HOIST THE COLORS!!
  • Gotta name mine either the Jolly Dodger or the S.S.tutter. Probs the latter XD.
  • My ship will be called "Chicanery" and feature me on board. The best ornament there is.
  • Maybe you will be able to craft or purchase key elements: masts, rigging, decks, bow, crew quarters etc. Hopefully there will also be a "ship creator" in the same vein as a character creator, where you can tweak the details to make the ship yours.

Based on what @GMSteven has played in the past, I wouldn't be surprised it it was a little bit like ArcheAge Dread Prophecies

  • I think I would name my ship the "Soggy Sally"
  • I would name mine "The Old Man" on account of all the creaking

Is that because she leaks? Get a soggy bum sitting in that boat. lol
  • Hm...I look forward to this.
  • Set sail to in search for One-Eyed Willy's treasure who's with me on a ship made from the bones of my enemies

  • I'd name mine 'Deep Ship' or something if the sort

That was my first girl friend's nick name.
  • Think I'll name mine Unsinkable II.

Whilst only toyed with Archage for a short time, I believe a highly used action in sea warfare was flying and boarding.

With Ashes not going down the route of flying for all players, it will be interesting what they come up with for the mechanics to allow engagement.

Personally, if they could use a mechanic from Sea of Theives whereby the ocean was procedural on a timer allowing for huge rolling oceans in sync with other players I would be thoroughly pleased.

As would I also if the level of cannon warefare, and on the fly repair was also included.
Encumber yourself with a limited amount of repair material before setting out!

  • If I were to make a ship I'd use dragon scales as armor because it has to be lightweight or magical for dragons to fly. Then I'd make the rudder out of the dragons wings or a sea creature's fins. If there is a sap or resin-like material I'd drench the dragon scales with it as I attach them to the enchanted wood or w/e.

The idea is a fast ship that an take a hit so I can constantly be behind my enemy and survive rushing behind them in the first place.
  • the Specality classes I heard them say once that you will create food. I want to master in Chef (if that is the specalty) and (because I a girl that loves bad puns) I want my boat to be the "Frying Dutchboy" and hopefully you can customize stuff like Cargo, Galley, Sleeping Quarters and Brig because I would make my Galley the BEST!!! so maybe it's like a floating resturant......with cannons....and a pirate flag....yes I know im a fangirl of many things.

The exterior and combatability of the ship is amazing but if you are going to have merchant commerce and possible crew buffs you need to be able to also design the interior, crew quarters, galley, brige, cargo hold, cannon placement, cannon ammo storage, Yea it sounds complicated but this was why they had different class ships because they had to work around this stuff that most games overlook and you bring a unique feature to Ashes over other games.

Give each class of ship a max load (this includes everything) before the boat is (unseaworthy) and would just sink.

Different hull, masts, sails, rutters, special external customization can all contrubute to the speed of the ship at max load so it would be easy to seperate an "interrior" and "exterior" element.

the "interrior" could have types of cannons, ammo, crew quarters, brige, galley, cargo hold (which would have a max weight due to size of the ship and already equipted interior components) ((like cargo A can carry between 0-100tons of cargo)) which can be designated with inventory (spices, cloths, weapons whatever can be bought and sold)

cannons can be customized (strength of blast, type of blast, rate of fire ect) which will have a max number depding on the type of ship you have and crew needed to fire them (ammo storage can just effect rate of fire or over ammo if you want to actually say you have x-shots so better be good crew to be effective instead of infinate ammo well that didn't work lets shoot more) (right now would be too hard to change number of cannons for cargo and stuff but maybe in the future?)

crew quarters can have more or less crew needed to run the ship (with a minimum being the base number to just steer the ship) which will effect cannon rate of fire (more people to man the cannons less time) speed and agility of ship (can move the sails faster)

Galley can keep up the health/buffs of the crew (a better chef or galley could make the crew stonger, faster, better.

brige could hold prisoners (if that sort of thing exists)

Just some idea from a girl that loves ships and movies about Pirates
  • During the very brief period I played WoW, it always struck me as foolish that no-one was running an ongoing poker game on one of the ships that sailed between islands...

Oooooooooh.....no wait, Ive got it! it's going to be Megs' [not the real name] fantastic flying menagerie. Yes I know it won't really fly, but it'd be great to have an ark full of animals
  • I'd certainly love for a slew of customization options, though I suppose part of what will decide how we construct a ship will be how we control it. If IS decides to make ship travel where upon entry the player controls only the ship itself (such as in Naval Action, or World of Warships) then the need for customization will only be for skins of outside hulls and flags, etc. and crafting and research would likely be presented as entire ship types in whole and not individual pieces. Should they construct it in a way that the ship is a separate entity (my preferred way, and the way I think they will approach it) and the player can move about while it sails, then there is a greater possibility for inclusion of numerous customization options.

I know they mentioned providing a default set of sails (that would include guild images, I believe?), but hopefully we'll have a bit of creative freedom with how we design our vessels.

Even without many options, I will still plan to explore shipbuilding. Maybe raid a rum port or two upon my personal galleon.

    Oh and...argh.
  • I'm going to name mine "The Nautical Seawitch".

Or maybe just shorten it to "Nausea".

I read that as "De war fat ship".  Which sounds like an obese battle vessel.

And if you could show Sponsorship along the hull or on sails, you could be the 'Ad Nauseum' ???
