[Subscription Discussion]

Just wanted to know what people's thoughts were on the subscription fee.

Comments

• Perfectly fine with it.
As they said themselves, it's probably the only way for them to keep the game running, without having to resort to some shady cash-grab practices.
It also means the game will mostly have decent players (dramatically decreases incentive of people making bots).
• Very happy with it. So sick of games that use other models to make money .
I just hope they stick with a subscription model and don't change 12 months down the track.
• $15 is industry standard, and I'm okay with it. The game is going to target a niche population of gamers (those who are interested in P2P games) and as such it's a good fee.

$10 seems viable but I worry that people who would pay $10 would also pay $15. So yeah...
• Putting a subscription on your game increases the chances of it being higher quality than F2P games, plus helps discourage gold sellers. Really, I don't see any real negatives to a Subscription model compared to F2P.
• I love it and i hope they won´t change this for at least 4 years ^^
• Yes subscription games are for gamers who want to pay less than a few drinks at the pub for a month worth of entertainment on a levelish playing field. F2P with cash shop tend to be for whales who can afford to be the best at a price but not much fun for everyone else.

Love the subscription model.
• Why is this even a topic? The Supporters of Ashes overwhelmingly support the Subscription model. So why are you even asking?
• Subscription model all the way
• All for subscription model!
• Very happy but it might become FREE to PLAY , like any other games.
A lot of them start with a sub and end up with a free to play model...

As I don't trust companies , I wont trust this one either. Even if I like this game very much.
• I'm delighted with a subscription however I do think $15 is quite steep - I've never paid such a high subscription before - but despite that I'm willing to pay the extra few £'s a month if the game turns out as wonderful as I imagine it to be ^^
• Thank god , we need to get away from the free to play and pay to win BS we been seeing lately
• Subscription model for a MMO infrastructure is only successful at a very large scale. This is why every other sub model MMO has switched; they couldn't reach the scale needed but wanted to survive.
• Theres still a cash shop.
We have no idea how thats going to be monetised in reality.
Cosmetics we know. Player grooming we now.
We also know their will be cash shop only items.
Its not all rainbows and roses.....yet.

They appeared to mock the sub system in comparison the the cash shop in the last stream.
That concerned me.
It makes me wonder if the subscription is there purely for cosmetic reasons.
Implying the game will be heavily monetised via the cash shop.

26:21 no grind ???
32:00 levelled content across server
35:00 possible equalised PvP... not open world
38:00 legendary one offs.
52:00 cash shop exclusives
54:00 'sub is good, market place is better ---hahaha'
• I'm personally fine with subscription... and more than happy to pay one if the game provides everything. I do have gamer friends who're uninterested in the game because of subscriptions though.

I wonder if a hybrid subscription system like Dungeons and Dragons Online could be something explored in the future. Offering base game with limited classes/races for free but a mix of a la carte game content (dungeons, classes, races etc) that you can purchase for a one time fee. While running concurrently with a subscription model. Subscribers get everything available at a monthly fee. That could be an interesting way to please all players.
• What Steven has said many times is, that while there will be a cash shop for cosmetic items it will never contain player advantage items and will never adopt a play to win mentality. There will apparently be enough cosmetic options in-game that there will be no need to purchase if you don't want to.
• I used to think that sub-based games were outdated and games that came in with free 2 play / buy 2 play were the future. However, after sitting in those games for the past 4 years and never being content or able to find a good home I am now rethinking it.
All the games I have played previous and that I have been committed to for years have been sub-based games.
The free2play games all inevitably gimp the game play with limited banks, or pay to win items in shops or reduced character experience and experiences.

I do wonder though why $15 per month and why not $10 a month? It seems that the $15 a month original pricing for MMOs should be much reduced now due to lower storage and server costs. I wonder if companies just chose $15 as that is what its always been and not based on any sort of new player base - expenses comparison.
I know based on subscriptions alone Blizzard managed to pay off all of WoW's development costs, servers and staff etc in the first couple of months alone. Leaving everything afterwards as profit. Just wondering is all :)

That being said - I am totally all for subscription based game and really, REALLY hope it is going to be my new home for the next 5 years at least :)
$10 a month is a nicer figure imho though :)
• Haha at first I was super against the $15 subscription, but after reading all your posts and listening to Steven's explanation on the subject, I'm sure it'll be fine. I guess I'm just used to the "pay $30" and own a game forever type of deal. $15 a month is a ton of money to spend on a game, and I'm still not sure if I am willing to invest that type of cash. I get that it's 50 cents a day, but compared to the other triple A titles, $15 a month is a shit ton of money. It'd be like buying a new game for every two months that I play Ashes of Creation. However, that being said, the game looks extremely fun and enticing, so who knows?
