The worst thing that can happen to a gamer is to have changes of the server design or server merges or somesuch happen and be forced to change their beloved character name to something like Mystmagic721.
Allowing first and last names obviously with a unique name requirement allows people to craft names that they like while still allowing for people to have first or last names that are the same as another person whilst still being unique.
Many games are getting this right nowadays but it would be sad if yours went back to the stoneage of only one name.

ie give the users ability to limit other peoples name length on their screen.
What they could do is have only your first name displayed, while your last name is hidden. When you add someone u can see their last name.
Thus, you might gets some funny situations with 5 jeffs in the same party. But they all have different last names.
Alternatively, a hidden randomized identifier, such as used in discord and on battle.net could be added, which is only needed for tagging them with chat commands and the like.

Can this be a thing? I've always hated having to use alternate spellings / adding numbers / sticking to having no spaces in between names / having one name. Especially love the idea about the nickname system! >v<
'familiar' names or nick names are almost a requirement.
IMHO.
