Question for guilds

Ok, i know there's a guilds subforum, but i'm not looking to start a guild, more that i'm looking at the possibilities of guilds and how they will work.

Basically, we know guilds can go to war, they can trade etc - but what about a guild who try to sit waring guilds down at the table and to talk, brokering peace between them? negotiating trades and if all else fails, enforcing peace? Is that type of guild a possibility?

I'm very much an established geek, i love my D&D tabletop games, and i tend to always play the monk or the paladin, and i try to replicate that in games - surely i can't be the only one?

Anyway, i open this up for some constructive feedback - can it work? I imagine anyone opposed to it, would end up forming guild alliances to overthrow the idea, but that in itself is an entertaining prospect... And as i draw this post to a close, i realise i'm getting old :D

  • Hm. It's not a bad idea. If players want to do it, there should be ingame tools to help facilitate the experience.

From a gamer perspective, being able to mediate as a third party might be possible. But enforcing rules on other players if mediation fail is dependent on your guild power. You only have authority if you have power.

While I can't see anything that would stop a guild such as this from forming, I would be a bit surprised if the game would support actual mechanics to facilitate such an arrangement. If such mechanics are put in to play I'd guess they would be more aimed in the player run governments not guilds. I could see a diplomat role/job within a player run government very easily.

I think if you're looking at it from a guild perspective my guess is you'd have to depend more on yourself to do the job rather than a game mechanic. That's just a guess though at this point.
  • ah yes, sorry let me clarify, i wasn't suggesting a game mechanic for this to work, i was looking at it as a player driven thing.

Could such a guild exist, could such a guild be powerful enough to enforce its ruling - your replies are good though and definitely fall in line with what i was thinking.
  • @ARandomAlien

We were thinking along the same lines. I think there will be the possibilities for a super guild. To get power however will probably follow the proverb "power in numbers". I think you'll have to convince a lot of people to join under one banner to pull this off.
  • There won't be anything stopping you from attempting to make the vision into a reality, other than other player's unwillingness to cooperate.
  • If your aim is to negotiate a peace or an agreement between 2+ other parties, you don't need power to enforce things. They either honor the agreement or they don't. The most difficult part might be finding 2+ groups that WANT to settle out hostilities if one has a current advantage. You could become specialized at getting one side to face facts and give a concession or two to end a conflict! :)

You don't need anything more than a small trusted group to be able to accomplish any of that.
  • Like a middelman, i dont think big or powerfull guilds will even bother to lisson to that, also why would they? Not to bring your idea down, cause i can see it why, but i personally think it wont work.
  • It sounds like a nice idea, until you realise that it's a lot more fun to fight another guild than it is to sit at a table and negotiate. Let's not forget that this is a game and it is expected that conflict is going to happen, so why try to limit it?
  • I suppose i'm kinda looking at it from a rp side of things, but the reason i posted this thread in the first place, was because of the very reason mentioned by the last poster, it's a game and people would rather just fight.

But i'd hope that perhaps there are drawbacks to fighting? perhaps a cost of materials for armour and weapons? time pulled away from the guild doing other important things? And then perhaps mediation by a third party could avoid those problems? I really don't know - it was just a thought that i wanted to throw out there and see what came back :)
