What Combat System?

Haven't looked too deeply into the game yet, and I'm sorry if the answer to this question is obvious. What kind of combat system will this game have? What I mean is, hotkey based or aimed/strategic attacks? Thank you.

  • Its a hybrid of action and tab targetting, taking the best of both worlds. There will be a limited set of skills, dodging, and positional aspects. They've resisted giving any more relevant details, like what they think the best of each world is, or a game with comparable combat.
  • In the past days I always prefered to have more skills than less. F. e. in Ultima Online which had over 64 spells and skills. Sure... some of them were not that usefull but added to the immersion of the game. The combination of action mode and targetting is always a good choice I'd guess because the combat feels a bit nearer to the figure and the targetting makes it possible to have more skills like in Lord of the Rings Online or similiar games. And I have to mention that it was really cool to see a mage "floating" with magic from one place to another in one of the available videos which could be a sign for implemention of more skills and spells which gives the players abilities to explore the world more intense which I'd love to do.
  • How the combat will feel is pretty unknown at this point, but it is closest to GW2 from what little has been seen. That's not to say it actually will be like that, it just appears similar. And GW2 is an example of a hybrid system, imo.

As to skill number I'm just guessing from the temporary templates that there may be a lot of skills to choose from, but that you may be limited to how many you can play with at a given time.
  • They are deliberately avoiding answering the question about the combat system which makes me pretty sure that they do not know what exactly it will be in the end product as it is still early in a design stage. They said it will have tab-targeting and dodging and that position will matter and they said they are aiming for cool looking animations and effects without going overboard so that the effects will get in the way but that is about it.

What we've seen in videos so far is a bog-standard tab-targeting combat a la World of Warcraft but it might be a placeholder for the time being.

I really would love to see a prototype or at least a design sheet about their combat system before the kickstarter campaign ends because I really would love to back this project but combat is 90% of what you do in a MMO no matter what anyone else says so a boring combat system would just kill the game for me no matter what other features there are in it.
  • Well to me avoiding the question is perfectly fine. The second they go "Well here's our combat system.." and people point out "well that's just a blend between x game and y game.. I hate those games" it immediately alienates people who just absolutely won't play in those game styles (even though it may not even work exactly how they think.. in their mind it already is decided.) I'd be willing to bet they have either already in progress ideas, or are set on a Combat System but it makes not sense to reveal it this early. Maybe a little bit down the road after the kickstarter they may start to demo things and get feedback etc, but until then it's still early in the dev phase.

Yeah, because it is up to personal tastes. Most people have pretty good idea of what they do and do not like. All the other features of the game might be amazing but if you do not enjoy what you are doing most of the time then what is the point of those features? What they should do is go out with it - present their concept and let people judge if they are interested.

Like it or not - the MMORPG is a desperation genre at the moment and a lot of their success with kickstarter is due to that and not from the ideas they have presented. That secrecy they have going on about the combat systems is insane at this point unless they do realize that it is a desperation genre and are really scared of pushing people away with their design. Still it is kind of scarier not knowing - I can get behind a system that has some stuff I dislike but I cannot get behind a game where the most important aspect is a total unknown and the worse case - where they do not have any idea where they are going with it.

I thought I already replied but I must have messed something up. Anyway the post is apparently lost. The gist of what I wrote was that they should post about the combat system because knowing that you might dislike certain features of the combat is less worrying than the devs not having an idea what they are doing with it and as the MMORPG is a desperation genre at the moment a lot of people might back this game although they will dislike the final game because of the combat design.

  • A significant portion of the internet considers this whole thing a scam, partly because we only have vague details about important systems like combat. I don't see how revealing something, even if its incomplete and a work in progress, can make that situation worse.

Yes, they might lose some backers that don't like the look that the system is going. But intentionally not showing combat to keep backers that it would drive away is scummy behavior, and not what I would expect from a company run by a player trying to make mmos great again.

Edit: @Elveone Did you have a quote in your post? I've lost every post that I've tried to quote someone, including existing posts that I edited a quote into.
  • @mycroft yeah, that was it. I figured it out afterwards. Thanks for the heads up though :)
Also my original post had a bit sharper tone - I was on the edge about the scam allegations but after some consideration - I really do not think that they are trying to scam anyone but because they are not many games in the genre coming out they end up doing it unintentionally to people who would dislike some of their systems by not sharing their design.
  • Is it better to tell everyone how it will be subject to alpha testing, everyon egets on board, and then it cant be done so must be changed ?
Thus all the people you alienated with the specifics have gone, and now the people that wanted those specifics are also gone.

    Makes no sense to me.
Better to tell people how combat will be, when its 100% certain how combat will be.
  • Yes, it is better because at least people will know what you are trying to do. The game is in kickstarter, in pre-alpha. Some things are not going to work and will change and that is a given. Do you think that all the announced features will work 100% as they are described?
  • well i just prefer a combat system that doesnt have RNG into it. Like "i swing my sword and a "MISS" comes up" when there is no real action in the mob or opponent that used a counter to me swinging my sword.
  • But they already have outlined what they are going to do.
They just havent gone into specifics yet.
  • "Outlined" by saying "there will be tab targeting, positions will matter and there will be doding". Because that does not sound vague at all...
  • I'm just really hoping that the combat isn't as horrible as GW2 or WOW.
  • From what they have shown of the mage, it looks incredibly slow.. I really really hope the combat gets much more fast paced..
Nothing worse than insanely long skill cast times and cooldowns, so all you're doing in the mean time is jumping about trying not to die..
Granted, it's fine for big hitters/nuke skills.. but I don't want it all to just be slooooowww...
