Reasons New MMORPGs Do Not Succeed

  • I think that developers are trying to make WOW copy with exactly the same format, which in my opinion is trash and is best example of what MMO should not be. People do not play WOW because they do not like the format it is done it, or they got bored of it. Literally copying the same format that WOW has is pointless because people will not suddenly like WOW just because it has different name and has different textures, current players might as well create new characters in instead of playing the copy of the game.
  • Because they are just in for a quick cash grab.
  • Honestly, there is only one answer to this question.

    Greedy developers/publishers.

I challenge anyone to come up with a failed MMO that is not due to this.

Whether it is Archeage and Trion's obvious money grab, Bless trying to be a re-release of a known broken game without putting the required work in to fix it (or even translate it), any one of several dozen games that hired inexperienced developers that don't know the intricacies of MMO's well enough, or games that fail to hire community and support staff.

No one goes out to make a bad game, or offer bad service. However, we all know this has happened many times in the MMO inductry. Every shortcoming in an MMORPG that I have ever seen was simply because someone that worked for the company didn't think the issue was important enough to allocate resources to.

So I've been around the mmo playground for quite some time.  And the number one reason a mmo fails is because the devs did not realize how fast players can chew through content, and failed to plan for any meaningful end game content so early on in the game.

Regardless of the game type, sandbox, quasi open world, theme-park, it makes no difference, the devs need to drown us in content.  They need to hit the ground running and already be working on the first expansion by the time the game launches! And they need to keep that cadence up with out fail.  All of a games poorly designed features only add to and exacerbate the lack of content, because the players have nothing else to judge.
  • This may of already been said and we can't argue that WoW has changed the MMO scene since it dropped. I really feel to many people compare new MMO's to WoW and I love WoW don't get me wrong I still play it but, WoW had so many new systems and things that changed MMO's forever. I personally really don't feel we will EVER see this big of a innovation in an MMO ever again. I have huge hope and hype for AOC and if they get the node system right this may be another ground breaking thing. Combat is also huge needs to be seamless and feel good. server stability at launch isn't a huge thing for me if they are working to fix it. I've never seen a new server being flooded with thousands of people ready haha good luck boys! but I think people need to go into it with an open mind and not have to high of hopes and stop comparing to what blizzard did and let each MMO speak for itself. most everything else I read is also valid. I think deep down to many people compare each MMO to WoW and are disappointed new ones don't have the same feel as WoW. Just my 2 cents!

Actually, the reason I follow AoC forums and live streams is because developers seem to understand that following the trends that WoW has set for MMOs is not the way to go (at least this is what I concluded from their official statements on live streams). There are so many ways to create an MMO game, but instead developers were always sticking to WoW format.

Agreed. I tried WoW but it just wasn't my cup of tea. This one holds potential for my, addmittedly, narrow interests in gaming. The node system looks to be good in theory I just hope they give branching options. Tier 5 Elf node in forest shouldn't look like a Tier 5 Elf node in the mountains and niether should look like a Tier 5 Elf node built in a cove. Let building construction and shop availability reflect the resources, flora and fauna of the area.
  • @eimal

That's what I'm saying! if they stick to what they are doing I really feel they will be fine and if others can see that they are trying to think outside the box and go in opened minded I think they will really be happy with what they have done.
  • You guys need to check out ASTA.  It's the definition of cheap WoW clone.

The translations are effing HILARIOUS at times though so there is that.
