Class skills / skill trees

So had a thought about class skils and making everyone even more unique. And the thought came to me of skill trees.

I'll use fighter as the base example. Each level you get points to invest in your skills, so you'll have a few basic skills everyone gets, and at a certain level you unlock specialisations.

So say I hit level 10, I can now invest points into either sword and board, 2h weapons, or polearms, which would grant a bonus damage with that weapon type.

I want to double with tank later, so I choose sword and board, which unlocks a number of other skills I can use. So I invest in those skills some of which in turn unlock a new skill, some new skills may get a bonus from lower level skills. things like that.

If they want to make things truly unique they could even hide unavailable techniques until they're unlocked. Or have a random generator decide from a selection of skills which ones are unlocked at certain levels.

So I invest in sword and board, a generic skill is unlocked, along with two random skills for that level. Although then things start getting a little complex. But it would prevent people from just getting a cookie cutter build, because there's no garuntee they'd get the skill they want.

Comments

  • I do like the staying away from cookie cutter. Nothing more boring then everyone running around as "Lol I'm running Facechop build wtf you doing not going facechop, nub."

Personally my guess on their skill trees will be akin to ESO's. You build into a skill for 1 point and then by using it/having it slotted it gains XP and then at a certain point you can morph it to do other things. So with this game style you would, for instance, build Fighter Charge ability. Use it a bit.. then spec into Mage. The morph comes up and you morph the charge into Blink. -- Or you are Tank and have a shield wall skill, use it and then spec further into Tank and morph the shield wall to be thorny as the secondary class option for that skill.

As for my guess on their "readied abilities" so to speak, it kinda goes in line with your idea. Sword and board has different ability sets than like a 2 handed sword etc (similar to how GW2 plays). But maybe it allows you to kinda build on that and customize rather than going -- uh hey you have your main abilities picked for you, just how you modify them is your choice.
  • They already have a skill tree system in place for the secondary skills.
We dont know the specifics at this moment.
Combat and node blogs will ocme at some point.
