summoners potential

with what steven said about summoners in Livestream today I think summoners have the most potential and most adapative combat style. How augments change your summons and how great they can be in group situations with group summons. Sieges, dungeons and raids completely pwnt with multiple summoners ulting. PvP I feel like summoners have the greatest capacity for skill and the gap will be wide between good summoners and bad ones.

  • They said that ult summons will likely be limited to a siege mechanic.
  • I think we're working with incomplete knowledge. I'm sure each class will have something special to give to all aspects of the game. To say one has any advantage over the rest at this point is very premature. There is still to much pre-alpha, alpha, and beta balancing that will happen before we can jump on any class band wagon.

That being said, I think the ideas discussed in the live stream were very, very awesome and worth being excited about. I'm looking forward to what each class' ultimate siege ability will be.
  • What @Kiln said. At first, there were some who were scared that the Rogue was going to be OP, because of the stealth mechanic, seen during one of the live feeds.

In the last live feed, we saw a bit of what the mage looks like, and people were proclaiming it OP. In the same feed, we also heard a bit about the summoner.....

As time goes on, we'll be hearing/seeing more and more about all the classes. As well as the races. I'm pretty sure that until we get a good look at all the races/classes, there will be proclamations about "this", and "that", being the new OP. Despite all that, in the end, I'm sure Intrepid will have balance between the classes.

Players will be able to choose the class they like, and not worry about being competitive.
  • Where can I go to look at today live stream?
  • @ironbear

    Then hit the "videos" tab
  • @Kiln Thank you very much
  • I'd actually love to see summoners being able to summon traditional summons, but also something like mesmers in gw2 -> their clones. And also weapons and stuff.
    Why?
Because in 90% of games I played, summons were acting like **** because it's just AI

I agree that the summoner has good potential with the current things they have said in the latest live stream.
But to say they have the most potential when we do not even know what the other archetypes can do is way to early.
I look forward to the moment that they will and can show more of the other classes as well, if summoners work together and can create something as a siege golem I have good hopes for other archetypes to also being able to something special.
  • I think what we heard about summoners in the latest livestream was just possibly the first hint of a system that could be adapted across all the classes. I'm sure Intrepid are on the ball with regards to not making a class too powerful.

I can see the class banding together idea being adapted for other classes too. For instance, tanks could band together to form a stronger shield wall or rangers could rain down a vast volley of arrows to push back an enemy advance in a siege.

Testing of AoC is going to be super important, and with such a vast number of possible combinations from the class system then there's going to be a lot of balance to do. It's good to bring up thoughts such as this thread. Debate is necessary.
  • His description of how Summoner's skills work certainly put one of major worries about the class to rest. However I still need more info on Summoner as well as on my other Top 3 (Cleric and Bard).

Pets not being just an auto attack minion is refreshing. The utility and adaptability as well.

I imagine that means it needs an item too.
  • From every thing gathered so far I can see the summoner class being a class played differently depending on the situation I mean if your in a siege but your skill tree is set more for PvP your not going to band together with others to summon anything or push an objective your more of a hunter, In addition this makes summoner seems like the class that needs the most forethought and mico control, the best summoner would be useful in Dungeons PVP and PvE this would be a very hard build sense we don't know the skills a summoner primary would have. As a summoner secondary however it gives you alot of alteration to choose from.

    FOR EXAMPLE

Tank/Summoner Can summon a shield wall alone protecting 3 allies at once.

Rouge/Summoner Can summon shadow clone that mirrors skills or auto attacks.

Ranger/Summoner Can summon multiple arrows from a single shot.

It was also said that what you summon as a summoner primary will depend on your race so that leaves me more interested to be a summoner primary. As far as cleric and bard go although we have no set skills for them either I think it safe to assume Clerics have heals, holy magic, and maybe binding magic as skill trees and bards have Buff, De-Buff, and control skill trees.
  • I would like to know If your summons are limited to skills like witchdoctors in Diablo or is it a permanent summons that you can cast skills in combination with like taming a deer that can heal you while you summon earth spikes to attack?
