Stand Alone or United?

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive. I spend 90% of my time soloing, exploring, farming but some of my most memorable moments have been in groups. From castles sieges in Lineage, to farming twilight gear in sithilus and fighting over the boss spawns when Horde tried to wipe us. All depends on what you feel like doing on any given day.
My plan is to solo away until I stumble upon the right group of people to join up with.
Whether that happens in alpha or live, we'll have to wait and see.

I've always preferred playing with guild mates. Or even pick-up groups as hazardous as that can sometimes be to one's health :-) I've made a lot of on-line friends over the years, many of whom I still keep in touch with via Facebook. And I think being in a guild and playing with others will be a big advantage in this game. For me, the issue will be finding a good guild. I've been fortunate to land in some really good guilds in Star War Galaxies, EQII, and a great one in Landmark. I've also been in a guild where I'm pretty sure the leader was a sociopath.

I prefer to solo and pretty casual but have those heavy grind moments. I enjoy exploring/socialization more than hunting down every monster as fast as possible (I'm still for hunting down every mob in a dungeon, just not on a timer) I'm very interested in this convo and seeing if we can keep it a going, some of my best experiences have been in guilds where I met great friends, who I'm still friends with today, years later. I've noticed one of the problems in this discussion is finding a good guild, why not put similar minds together and have a guild planned out/ready for closed alpha/beta launch?

I've never been much of a guild person. Between having a ton of time constrictions from being a full time student and working full time (and my love of sleep), and some ever present social anxiety, I've just never been able to connect with a large enough group of people. My best friend is great at it though, and I've been able to be a tag-along for some more casual guild activities and I have to admit, I enjoy it much more playing with other people. And now that I'm all finished college, and have a good year or two to get settled before the big launch (although i will be playing in one of the alphas or betas so hopefully a little early), I'm definitely going to be looking for a nice group of new friends. Besides, I'm going all in on being a crafter, and I would much rather have friends to craft for than just making things to sell. Cash is nice, but being able help my allies get stronger is much more satisfying to me. And having a few folks I can trust to help me get my caravans around the world safely would be nice too.

I more of a team player, But I have gone solo before.

In this game I feel you need a guild because of the PVE content like raiding/dungeons
Also gotta look at the Crafting system as well so you need other players to help you progress in the game!

So totally team player! I'm glad they made it like this because it breaks solo interactions and more Community work as a team base game!!

( You can still solo just take longer to craft/get gear )

@kadin -- Guilds are not always equal to drama. I'm of the opinion -- and mind you, it is only opinion -- that the drama tends to be more in your hardcore guilds. When there are constant expectations (gear levels, character levels, character builds for biggest baddest numbers/heals/etc), that leads to always finding those one or two people who don't meet expectations. Or, you've got a guild leader who's all about "I'm in control," then he gets a girlfriend, makes her an officer, and crap begins to roll severely downhill.

Those have been my experiences, anyway, with hardcore guilds.

Perhaps you might, at some point, wish to consider a more casual guild.

Oh, by the way, we have a casual guild! Actually, just kidding on that one. It's very nice to just be your own little group of two, as well; you already know each other well enough to understand and accept each others' quirks & expectations, so that lends itself to fairly peaceful gameplay.

In other words, totally getcha, and also glad that the guild we have doesn't tolerate drama. We're all much happier thattaway :-D

In the beginning I will probably play alone because I am a pretty fast player who doesn't want to waste any time and I often got to play with people who are to slow cause they want to discover the world or read some mechanics of their skills etc. (guess that's just my speedrun mentality :D )
If the quest system will be more like in Guild Wars 2 I don't mind playing with people cause you can't be really slow when you don't have to look for the guy to talk to for the quest :D

I think I will start looking for a guild after reaching max level cause when I played Wildstar I had to wait for more than a month until 4 more guild members reached max level and until then I already lost interest in the game cause I couldn't do much alone.

@beapo, I'm not asking this to be combative, but rather to understand.

You understand that, at this time, devs are not talking about creating a grindfest, or a set of dailies to have to work on at max level, or really any version of "endgame" as we're accustomed to it, yes?

Eh, I was in a guild for BDO, but I started solo. Same thing happened in WoW, and pretty much every MMO I played in. I'll start off solo, and if I find a group of players I like hanging out with I'll join them.

For me it's a question of if this group of people is more fun than playing solo.

I plan on trying to find a Semi Casual guild. One that does weekly events like PVE dungeons and raids and organized GvG events, but does not make them a requirement. I do want to be in a guild that is not afraid to go to war with other guilds.

Yeah, I wonder how speedrun works with non-repeatable dungeons. Seems like even the instanced dungeons won't be repeatable.
Instanced dungeons should also reset with new mobs rather than the same static mobs. Also, I expect there will be obstacles that require utilities beyond the abilities of one avatar.
Maybe you just run around killing as much stuff as you can as quickly as possible?

We'll have to actually wait for folks to craft stuff, so it may be possible to out level the available gear - but maybe repeatedly killing stuff your level while waiting for better gear to be crafted will feel like raiding? I dunno.

It's a big world. I don't think solo people will run out of things to do. But "speedrun" doesn't really seem to fit the game design of Ashes.
(Maybe speedrun will be fitting as many caravan raids into one session as possible?)

I typically play alone but I did run a guild in WoW for a while and it was fun. Would love to play with friends but seems like we are never on the same games at the same times.

So my guess is alone unless I can find a good guild, then I will give that a shot.

@Isende been there with the guilds drama don't even get me started on that!

@BeAPo AoC doesn't really seemed like the mmo you can just fastrun through everything its more take your time make friends with the community seek an adventure type game.

@Dygz Did they mention there will be instanced Dungeons I thought the dungeons will be attached to the "Open world"

@Townsendvol if you looking for a guild join the discord link below! and go to the tab #guild_recruitment
probably already aware of this but just thought ill share it!

I plan on joining a guild and building up a note with them. i think it could be fun defending it and ultimately raid a world boss together when the note is on this certain level.
although im not sure whether a pvp or a pve guild would suit me better ^^

I belong to a wider gaming community which is fairly casual for the most part, requirements and the like. So unless I'm in a position of leadership at all either Admin or Officer / whatever else then I usually play fairly freely doing what I want. Do lots of group stuff when it suits, depending on the game and what things there are to offer. We have more 'hardcore' elements for group content and do that sometimes also, depending again on game etc.

I feel this is the best option for me, being in a gaming community which is fairly casual but can organise things also.

I kinda just wanna join a guild, not a community where they have several guilds in different games. Not a lame guild but a guild with good people, no drama, and well known by having strong players.

I like group play and I like belonging to a guild, but sometimes I just want to get away. I like having an alt that is not guilded that can just wander and explore, and be on my own time. I like that no matter how you play you still contributing.

Great feed back everyone, but I think that some people are overreacting to the whole "solo" thing and don't really understand what it even means to solo in an mmo.

Otherwise, thanks for all the replies and I cant wait to see how far you all get. : D

I don't have anyone in real life to play games with and I'm too shy and anxious to talk on Discord if I decide to join a guild, even texting makes me scared :(
I wish I had a group of friends to play games with, being shy and having Anxiety is awful :/
Sorry for being a downer lol, I guess I'm wondering if anyone else struggles with this on here? If you do, just know that you're not alone and I dearly hope you get better<3
