About name reservation

About the name reservation process, I hope you'll prioritize people through the backers numbers order (ascending of course). I think that people who trusted the kickstarter and pledged earlier should be ahead of those who have spent 10k$ at the end of the kickstarter.

What do you think? Should money or trust rules?

Comments

  • I think it was stated in another forum post that name reservations will go in order of most expensive backers on down.
  • It is exactly why I made this topic. And also because I got a different answer from Steven, we (I) need clarifications! =p
  • I think its fine for it to go to people who pay the most $$. Names aren't pay to win or anything, at the end of the day the time you pledged is irrelevant for contributing while more $$ = more resources.
  • Well I hope they consider modern approaches to naming conventions. They've said in a stream that every single system they're including goes through a vetting process. The naming approach should work the same way.

Cryptic bases identity on accounts so two characters can have the same name because they're associated with an account handle. The example games are Star Trek Online and Neverwinter Online.

I just rolled a new character for the Morrowind expansion and finding a unique name can be a challenge because names are not account based. It struck me as ridiculous that this is still a technical hurdle nearly 20 years after graphical MMOs hit the mainstream. So let's hope they'll work on a much more elegant approach than adding letters and gymnastics with phonetics.

That said, in the interest of money having no influence on the game it should probably be first come first serve. In the worst case scenarios I'm not too worried. I've been collecting and curating a character name list for a long time now. It really helps facilitate persona creation in any games I play.
  • I think its ok if the one how spend the most get there turn first. They simply contributed more than others :/

On the other hand, its not faire either to let the early birds take theire turn first. What if you had an important reason why you could not be there at 00.01 am?
What if you live in a different time zone? (like me) ? for me the kikstartet started like 4am.
  • Other MMOs have done it by announcing in advanced when name reservations page will open. And then it was first come first served.

I personally think this is the most fair way.
  • I wont be one of the big backers but I do believe that those who drop the biggest coin should get to reserve names first. I think it benefits the whole community the more money is put in to development and if that comes from people out bidding others on kick-starter for the name Merlin then so be it.
  • I would prefer number order.... after all, I'd have pledged 10k as well if I was in any way rich and not pooped on by life. (Unable to earn money because of health).
Unless you're going to do affordability assessments... then I might come closer to the top as I've spent all my saving fund on this :D

Nah, honestly, it doesn't really matter that much, so your first name choice is gone.... it's not exactly as if everyone with name reservation on the ks isn't already well ahead of the millions who will follow and be left with Legolasslayer, xxxLegolasxxx or legolasatemyhampster72.

Apologies if anyone really wanted those legolas names... I was attempting wit. we all think they're cool, really we do.
  • I think it's ok. With the reservations we get anyways like Vachery said we are a mile ahead in a 20m dash so to speak. Odds are pretty good with all the backers that most names backers want won't be taken before they get a shot at it.
  • Speaking of name reservations, I wonder what is the min/max on characters in a name? Would help planning ahead if this was known.
  • I love those Legolas names you have Vachery. There really is no "fair" way to do it though, the OP mentions trust but i didn't wait because i didn't trust the developers. i hadn't even heard of the game yet so that isn't a trust issue. Going by amount pledged is never fair to those who don't make a lot of money, and having a free for all at 8am on their website isn't fair to people who are at work and have to wait till they get home to log in. However they do it someone will get the short end so i would say make sure to have a couple names ready and be happy you get a real name and not "legolasatemyhampster72"

that being said, I'm a somewhat late backer working 8-5 who didn't pledge a horrendous amount of money. I'm at the end of all the lines lol.

Kodon, Brit by any chance? :D

Anyway, done this a couple of times (hated bdo as they couldn't be bothered to send out emails that name reservation/selection was up so I ended up with something random. )
And luckily I have got a saved spreadsheet file with over a hundred names I've rated that are possibilities..... An d if anyone is worried, I'd really recommend investing half an hour ahead of game launch getting their own shortlist put together,

And whilst I'm sure that all of you here know where to go, and it be teaching a bear what to do in the woods, if anyone gets stuck for inspiration, I find the following useful:

The obvious names you really want.
Dictionary of mythology or phrase and fable,
names from history i.e. Google for 'ancient Egyptian man names' ,
    Biblical names
    names from novel, films, telly
    baby name lists,
    Foreign baby name lists,
Translate your first choice into other languages
using a thesaurus for alternative meanings to the name you want.
Place names etc ( I'm not planning on keeping vachery, but Chelwood Vachery is a place near here, I think it translates as hill-wood cow-barn.)
Even a basic dictionary, Black, drill, snow etc etc.
Plant names, animal names, weather and astronomical
    Etc etc etc

Play around with the spelling of ones you like and note your acceptable alternatives if your first choice has goes.

Then...And this is important....check it's not got any negative connotations, ie it's not Greek for...well anything too rude for me to post on this forum.... street slang etc etc

Double check it works with the race/ gender / that you'd be happy to spend the next ten years being known as it.

Then.... stick your list onto a computer spreadsheet vertically, compare it to the names immediately above and below and raise our lower that name according to your preference.
    Save.
    Et voila.
One list of names in preference order that saves you time panic hunting when the name reservation is announced and your first choice is already gone.
And something you could use again if the situation ever arises.

    Waffle over. Cow-hut out. :)

With the combination of First Name + Last Name, name reservation should not be a problem.

You might not get the perfect combination you like, but you'll have the first name you want. You love the name Thanos and Thanos Wargod was taken? NP, roll with Thanos Stormwolf etc.

That said, I'm sure you can't avoid the scenarios painted by Kodon and Vachery. Even with a two name system, you'll have people with names like:

    Dwarfy McDwarfface
    Elfy Selfy
    Sexykitten Notactuallyagurl

  • Given all the drama about names, I don't understand why people still accept systems which force them to pick a unique one. Why not use the other standard system, give people an ID#, and let them pick any name they want, even if two people have the same? Plenty of people have the same name in reality, (or online-wise, on Discord, and numerous small games) ; it works out fine.

As part of the concept of breaking down useless tropes from old MMOs that were repeated just because "that's how it's done", I was really hoping naming would fit there too.
  • hey guys, so..... bringing this old thread back up. im not well informed. and i have yet to purchase the VOYAGER PLUS pack, so i would love to know if my username here will be my in game name or do i hate to input it in create a character menu or what ever. also, can i use another name when we get to that point or are we stuck with our forum name?

Has never been confirmed. More will come later once they get the actual account system for the game integrated. I would suspect that you will not be required to use your account name as a visible name in game. Since in many cases those are emails there are too many security concerns around making those visible to all. Also since they have said that they want people to be able to create "spying" alts as part of their roleplay and infiltration of rival nodes, having an @GEEZYPEE tag would be problematic. But as first stated, not confirmed at this time.

I've had my fill of "Sephiroth"s running around.. Be original, be creative, and there shouldn't bee too much of an issue picking a name no one else has.
That said, a name reservation mechanic is good to have. We have a year+ to work on a name for our characters.. Which I do admit, it is one of the most difficult parts in creating a character... In video games or even table top gaming.
If you do have a beautiful awesome name in mind, don't tell a soul...
  • Oh i have a name in mind, kind of clever and would fit a mage hahahahah. And no, its not going to be, “TheMage” or Mage, or any name for wizards in movies. Hahaha i just hope mages here have flame bolts. Or whatever hahaha would be great.

I have the same question. In Archeage and Bless character names with minimum 2 letters was permissible so it is technically doable. I have asked this each live stream but it has not been picked up yet by @GMSteven. It will be the first thing I test in Alpha one and if not possible the first feedback I give questioning why.

Regarding name reservation it should be first come first served, but the order of the reservation option opening up should be in package order to ensure those who contributed the most get to choose first. If they miss their window tough luck. Pretty sure most of us who play MMO's regular have name variations to cope with not having the option of first choice name.
