Parlor Games like..???

What are parlor games? You mean like spin the lucky wheel or smash the gopher or gambling and slot machines?

Comments

  • I'm waiting for this info too, especially as googling 'Victorian parlor games' shows how weird / bored our ancestors could get :D
  • I vote beer pong
  • Probably anywhere to gambling mini games, to card games (hearthstone joke), to maybe having a all out brawl with beer bottles.
  • How about a competitive game 'o darts?

But the first person to suggest "dwarf tossing" will answer to 'me hammer!  Bah!

    ;)
  • Great suggestion on the dwarf tossing!
  • Well I'm pretty certain tavern games will be influenced by the race architecture you choose for your freehold ^^
Toss the Dwarf - Gimli will never approve :(
  • Parlor games are just indoor games, so maybe we can see some chess, but probbaly more simplefied games.
  • Liars dice is always a great tavern game

    Bah!
That didn't take long..... me and my big mouth!  Hah!
  • I'd love a gwent-style parlor game (from the Witcher).

In case you're not familiar, it's a card game like a very simplified version of MTG or Hearthstone that you can play with opponents around the Witcher world. What's cool about it is that a huge part of the system is collecting rare cards and building your deck - through achievements, world exploration, killing certain bosses/mobs, etc. Since area exploration is shaping up to be an intrinsic part of Ashes, I think a similar system would work great here!

Note: doesn't have to be cards - this dynamic of exploring for collectibles to be used in parlor games could apply to pet battles, or even standard games (like chess) where your pieces are re-skinned based on your achievements.

I vote for a drunken brawl tourney, fists only, in the tavern basement!! :D
  • I think its going to be stuff like knife throwing and maybe some kind of dancing game. Considering the timeline they are drawing from

I'm thinking along the lines of poker, perhaps backgammon, checkers, dice rolling, darts, maybe a drinking game.
  • I do like the idea of a cards game.

I used to play a RPG on the SegaCD called Lunar: The Silver Star.
In the sewers, in one of the cities, was a guy that you could gamble with by playing Blackjack.
That little mini game was so damn fun, I kept a permanent save game right at that location so I could play it whenever the mood struck me.
You wouldn't think something like that would be exciting, but their implementation was more fun than any dedicated pc blackjack game I could find at the time, back then.

So, depending on how they implement things, even the most simple of game ideas could turn into fun little diversions.
  • five finger fillet , at high stakes lose your hand for 20 min as healing
  • I'm guessing some generic flair games would be along the lines of dice rolling (maybe a twist on traditional real world type games). Maybe an over/under type betting card game. Checkers would be a neat addition, though I would imagine they'll try and put some sort of AOC twist on all these types of games.

Well games such as "Fireplace Rock", a card game with heroes that play decks of cards to defeat your opponent. Also "Cards With Divinity", an adult oriented game were you match phrases in hopes of being the most crude or shocking.

I personally, hope we see "Gallows Dude" were one player selects a word and others guess the letters contained in that word. Every time they guess incorrectly, a part of a drawn stick figure is made under a noose.

*Any resemblance to actual games is unintentional and on accident. Any actual games with these premises are purely coincidence.

  • Even something similar to shuffleboard would be nifty, plus it could be more of a spectator game, side-bets and all
  • Wouldn't mind an outside game like horseshoes.
  • How about a Pet the Bear game? You pay gold then pet the bear. If you get out without being killed you get bear fur that you can craft into something. Once in a while you get a rare bear tooth or bear claw. Mmmm.... bear claws.
