If you are worried about being "forced" into PvP, I have an answer for you...

...become friends with PvPers.

I've never been a "crafter" in MMORPGs, rather doing it as something to do on the side, something to pick up a little extra cash when I needed it. I've never invested the time and gold into it to make it worth my while, which means I am often grinding or PvEing to get gold to buy my gear.

I would love to be "adopted" by a crafter who would supply me with gear, while I protected them from their biggest fear... Violent Player Interaction! I have a great personality, a bit feisty, but can be pacified with most types of cookies (except raisin. Raisins are just humiliated grapes, I have no time for them). Any loving, hardworking crafter looking for a sweet, cuddly, deadly PvPer to adopt?

  • The need for symbiotic relationships is going to be a bit higher important in Ashes, I figure. In most MMO's it's highly possible to solo craft, but in Ashes we'll likely see a need to a "buddy" system of sorts. Sure, it'll be possible to solo to a degree, but community is important for crafters to thrive. As a crafter, I'll be keeping my services open to all who may want them, but if you find me in game I'll be happy to provide the basic services or even an "adoption" of sorts. You won't even have to call me daddy, either.

You will need to have a few friends like you describe unless you have a very  regular play schedule. Your idea is great though. :)
  • Besides healing I tend to walk down the path of crafting.  Something tells me this is going to be a long path with many twists and turns.

  • You could potentially turn this into a guild idea - basically, a conglomerate group of PvPers and Crafters that protect and gear each other in a large symbiotic relationship.
  • That gives me an idea. What if you could hire a group of pvpers as mercenary to protect you while you wonder around the world

I crave PvP, if a game has no pvp then its not a game (not really but its boring).  The only type of crafting i know is WoWs and i despise it (edit: also runescape which i loved).  I also only raid if I want something out of it, i care not for the I did this when it was still current bragging rights.  But as much as I crave pvp I hate people who gank lowbies and do group ganks.  I will hunt down all evil players and Justice shall be met!
  • This is basically how I started pvp xD I'm a heavy gatherer in games and love crafting but my partner was my pvp body guard and well - I started joining in and discovered the fun of pvp xD Now I thirst for jewels and blood *_*
  • Become friends with rogues.  They love to jump out at those who would stalk you.    Believe me. it works.
  • I think its important to mention that communities will heavily vary from one server to another.
I've seen this happen for Tera Online, ArcheAge, Black Desert. Communities pre-form prior launch and select their own server.

    • Competitve but friendly PVP guild will select a server to form a dynamic, combative, but friendly community.
    • Super hardcore World first kind of guilds, will form several guild and select a different server to dominate.
    • Roleplayers will try to gather on their own servers
    • And then you have the more laid back, casual, familial, friendly guild that will attempt to avoid the server where the big PVP guilds are.
Closer to release, I know my boyfriend and I will organise something for laidback guilds to gather (EU), so we can have our friendly, relaxed server, with more "friendly" PVP. If you attracted by that idea feel free to poke me already, we have our own Discord server.

  • They should not be any "forced PvP", serious pvpers should go and have a look at the pvp only game Camelot Unchained.  PvP/PK to your hearts content.

On the flipside, the developers shouldn't cater to carebears that want to essentially avoid one of the core parts of the game.

It's a player-driven game and player versus player conflicts are at the heart of that, whether it's outright combat or just economically trying to harm opposing groups it's the conflict that drives the entire game forward.

The entire thing is risk vs reward, if you're going to stray from the safer zones at your own node and venture out into the wilderness then there is risk accompanying that, expecting to be safe when you're off away from civilization is such a strange thing to expect.

If you want to play a game that has player conflict at its heart and then try to avoid any and all player conflict then you're missing a very large part of the game and that's not something that the developers should be encouraging.

Sometimes you get attacked when you're questing, sometimes it's when you're gathering and sometimes you get ambushed when you're in an area that you thought was safe but that's all part and parcel of playing a game with other players.
  • No.  PVP is a part of this game and with the corruption system pointless PVP will not occur because the combat effectiveness of people who are corrupt will play a major role.   This is a PVP game and you have to be ready for PVP.   The key with making PVP good and not making this game a wasteland is making new max level cap and max level cap players with max gear a very small gap.  If this is a small gap like 10% damage reduction because gear will not have stats from what I understand, you will not have a large advantage if you have the best gear.   That makes PVP better than using the gear score method with a gear treadmill.

    hahahaha.
Yes. This is a common answer from hardcore PvPers.
Because it gives them more opportunities for PvP combat.
If the "fear" is violent player interaction. Engaging in violent player interact for them is not a solution. That is just adding to the problem.

If I don't like player characters killing other player characters... it doesn't matter who is doing the killing. Such people don't want player characters killing player characters to be the solution for conflicts. It doesn't mean the individual is afraid to fight or is too unskilled to fight or doesn't want to personally take the time to seek revenge.

Seems to me that the Crafters who end up adopting the symbiotic relationship with PvPers will be the ones who have no "fear" of violent player interaction, rather they just want to focus on crafting.
I'll be curious to see how commonly these deals are struck.
  • Be a part of good organized guild, together with people that appreciate their community and are willing to come to aid to their comrade!

You will never be alone, and your caravans will be (more or less) safe.

You can never be 100% safe though, regardless of what you do. But that's the thrill of the game!  B)
