Non-DPS Class Diversity

Hello everyone!

Of the 8 currently advertised available classes there is only 1 tank and 1 healer.  I am hoping that there will be some viability to tanks and healers that don't run cleric or tank as their primary class, otherwise we are shoehorning people who want to play those roles into the 1 available class for that role.  I understand that the secondary role could apply to making the roles handle differently (i.e., Tank/Rogue becoming an evasion tank), but it doesn't get around the issue of making all players who want to be a tank having to choose 1 class.

Do y'all foresee someone running X/Cleric or X/Tank being able to fill those roles in small groups for dungeon content or otherwise?  If not, is it even a big deal to you?

  • I'm hoping Bard/Cleric will have healing. I suspect this combo will have more self healing but hopefully with augments I'll be able to be a buffing bard with team healing support. Obviously we don't have enough info to truly answer your query but I'd hope with so much potential that we will see plenty of diversity. As a devil's advocate, I could say that the less diversity the better because it will be easier, not easy, to secure class balance.
  • No. Because an X/Cleric only has self-heals so is not going to be able to fulfill the role of a group healer.

But, group healer won't be the only role for a Cleric.

I will be a Rogue/Ranger, but I'll be focused on stealth and non-combat skills rather than DPS.
  • Ah, but do you see, there are essentially 10 tanking classes and 10 healing because of the secondary classes. Given some won't be super viable in most situations (but a ranged tank could be fun). But still, the options are there.

Absolutely, but I know for sure Steven said that we would be able to switch our secondary classes.  It makes them a much less permanent and meaningful selection if the tank can switch secondaries to tailor himself encounter to encounter, or even dungeon to dungeon if the switch has to happen in town.

So group healer is cleric/ only? Well if that's how It'll be I guess I won't be healing others.
  • A tanky version of the mage (as an option) would be nice, with skills that protect himself and his allies with magic instead of armor and raw health. Maybe that would be an interesting break from the glass-cannon role that mages usually fulfill in other MMO's.
    But it's just an idea...

We definitely need more info on the use of secondary class abilities and how often/how they can be switched out.
