Crafting Tomes

I feel that a rare drop that needs to be essential to play are BOOKS! Everyone loves a good book when it comes to skills and abilities, countless years of experience jotted down on its pages, secrets hidden in between each cover. For example, imagine running across an epic tome with runes scrawling the thickly leather bound cover, moss growing thickly on the southside of the bindings, with detailed descriptions of potions you've never heard of and neither has anyone else! (Maybe a mechanic that only releases so many of the book per month as to not make meaningless farming an occurrence, not a chore and also increasing the prices of your own personal hand made potions leaving you a step ahead of the rest.) Not only that but it would included information about certain resources of the surrounding area and special ways to receive more/special crafting reagents. Like found most abundantly in a Root Toads pads [increase resource drop rate for Root Toads by 15%] What are your thoughts and maybe suggestions for such  thing? Should this also apply to skills or even crafting specific skills that affect game play?

  • So you are talking about books that are found in the game that give temporary buffs or actually give skills to be used whenever?

I think the idea of finding rare crafting recipes is an awesome idea, but I don't know how I feel about skills being dependant on a random world drop.

It is an interesting system and worth exploring more though!
  • It's a great suggestion @BlueMoonJourney, especially if you're thinking more along the lines of recipes. It's totally viable knowing what we do about the world we'll be starting in and seems like a logical choice for acquiring said weapons/armor.
  • I agree with having rare crafting recipes and additional information on where to find particular ingredients e.g. Rumors have it that Toadnurps can be found in the Whispering Marshlands (granted, this would eventually become Wiki information, so I don't know how they'd keep the lore element relevant long term).

However, I'm a little hesitant with the same book allowing buffs to gathering mats. If you got a temporary buff after learning a rare recipe that only lasts until you find one of the ingredient mentioned in the book (e.g. the buff disappears after you find one Root Toad, Toadnurp, w/e the mat is called), then it shouldn't be too problematic.

    It's a neat idea regardless.

Recipes that only work once you've understood the mechanisms?
Oooh they'd be perfect for complex creations, or alternative / New styles i.e. buildings etc
    Great ideas @BlueMoonJourney

I can see books making their way in for sure, but maybe not in the way you describe. Regarding resources, since they will not always exist in the same place, it would be hard to give regional tips. Similarly, receiving more/special materials after reading a book might work for, I don't know, more arcane types of materials if they exist, though I doubt physical ones. I could see books being sought after in the Scholar's Academy, so if you love books, I hope you're planning to be part of that social org.
  • Give me all your books!  My need is immense.  Books, I need books to survive!
  • I feel like as soon as you pass a certain level of crafting the book would probably become irrelevant and then you could pass it along to a friend? or pass the info along? I feel like the mor personal and unique the book the more meaning it lends to the game? I really would like a few friends for this game so please feel free to message me :3
