Collision Detector

I started hearing about this with Warhammer Online. Is it a thing now common?

Should we expect this to be implemented?

This would affect heavily battle strategy with combat in formation and such to obstruct bridges or to protect archers and mages.

  • Interesting.  Making choke points during sieges would also be much more viable if there were collision, but I'd like to hear from a programmer what kind of impact this would have on the game in high player volume environments.
  • You know, if immersion is the goal then it would seem logical to have collision.  You can't run through other people IRL.  The biggest problem I see with it though is people blocking doors, mailboxes, vendors, etc. in cities just to annoy other players.

  • I would like to have collision. It would be annoying to deal with in popular taverns and the market place, but for the PVP it would almost be a must have. One thing that irritated me in wow is that players could just run through each other, making choke points a joke, especially in cities that have designs for them... in fact almost every single major city has two or more chokepoints in them. Meaningful conflict should involve players coming up with strategies for sieges and caravans, not a huge zerg rush in a city and calling it a battle.

I'd like to have collision but not in towns. Imagine 50 people at bank or returning some quest to npc ;P. That would be awful. I'd have to learn how to fly :D

Maybe that's how they're encouraging PK. High risk posting your mail at peak times, high reward that it gets sent.
  • Another thing I am thinking is that this collision thing could be affected by weight.

It doesn't matter if you have a shield wall when you are being charged by some mammouth like creature or some heavy boulders launched from a catapult, you will receive damage AND be pushed back or on the ground.

Agreed. It just makes me feel that if a city is not in a state of combat or siege, collisions are off allowing people to pass into the tavern(as used in an earlier example), but if the city/town/whatever is in a siege state, collisions are turned on as the state of the world has changed. I don't see how conditional logic couldn't account for that.  I don't have a good response to caravans unless outside of cities collisions are always on in the world in mass. So for your caravan statement, would you rather see something like - X feet outside of Y city collisions are on and a choke could be setup to ambush said caravan?  I don't feel that setting up dead at a gate would be all that worthy of an allowable idea - Other players, town guards, ect.

This has already been a thing in MMOs It's not common for people to do that though... *knocks on wood*
  • If planting traps has been in games since pre 2010... isn't this the same thing? Why is this being viewed as something new?
