Alternatives to immediate Bot Suspension

Previous experience with bots, in another MMORPG, was that it could sometimes take too long for Admin to take action on a suspected botter.

In those instances, the players would take matters into their own hands de-leveling the players or training them with mobs to cease their botting.

One thought was that if an account has been identified beyond reasonable doubt that it is botting.

Then the account's players in game are flagged on map, and penalty free for killing with partial or full drop ( a grace period until perma banned)!

Just a thought!

  • One of my favorite aspects of the original Guild Wars was that when players were caught botting, they got banned. But it wasn't just a typical ban - the Guild Wars god of the underworld, Dhuum, would emerge from the ground to strike down the banned player, and it would turn into an event of sorts (you can youtube "Dhuum bans" for some laughs).

I 100% think that this should be applied in Ashes. Except, instead of it being a god that comes to claim the banned player, it should be a giant sandal that emerges from the sky to squash the cheater.
  • Agree, there is a greater sense of community issues being addressed when something like this is part of the game!

Players enjoy seeing / experiencing GM's in game for what ever reason.

Maybe they should turn into a corrupted monster that anyone can kill but it be like a pinata dropping whatever the bot had on it

This sounds fun, which is exactly the problem. People might become botters just to provide/experience this kind of content. I believe that botting is just plain wrong, so the logical punishment for that is to deny the fun.

Won't be fun for the person that has the account if it is permanently banned

That is true. However, if there was an in-game event for other players to participate when a person gets banned for botting, it could possibly just create an opportunity to "go with a bang", you know?

It does sound more fun than a simple account ban, though.

I would rather see an instant suspension. I don't want botters in the game any longer than necessary other than to prove that they are truely botting.

Lets be real here, there is no sympathy for botters. They are truely ruining our games in every aspect. If they are repeatedly botting, a permanent ban is the only way in my opinion.
  • Many bots I have encountered did not have a human present manipulating them.  They were programmed to run a certain course and auto loot after kills.  If they were killed they re-spawned automatically or eventually by it's handler when they realized they were dead.  An event to kill them is a waste of resources and our time if we get punished with corruption.  The "botter" suffers nadda.
    Account bans work eventually.
Another thing that might help is to   make it so new players or alts have limited trade or mailing abilites for 3-5 days. That would make it harder for repeat botters or accounts to sell gold.

  • So there was a system in another game I played that was very similar. It sounds great on paper but it was hugely exploited.

Players could flag a suspected bot, after 5 people had flagged them, they became killable, even in safe zones.

So troll guilds just ran around, reporting people and killing them even when they were standing in a non PvP zone.

The forums exploded, the company announced anyone caught exploiting the system would be banned and the system died.

I'm in favor of player flagging, but I'm not sure the killing and being made to drop gear is a good idea.
