Crafting/materials evolution

What to you think? Will they be related?

The answer seems obvious (duh, if you have not discovered mines how can you get metal?), but, but, butts everywhere.

I mean, you character levels up,in a node-area still low developed. So? Where does it take or where do NPC take materials to forge its ever increasingly powerful gear?

If you only discover, say, an iron mine, then you only will be able to forge iron weapons for weak that they may be?

Will we all start with stone tools like homo habilis? Will we survive alongside the Pleistocenic megafauna feasting on the carcasses the bigger carnivores have partially eaten and in a couple million years or so we'll be able to cast our first copper weapons?

  • I think I might need a little bit of clarification on what you mean (everything except the last parapraf seems a little like I need some implied knowlegde that I dont have  ). I understand at least the last part, and no we will have a medieval-esk technology level at the start.

well, the point of the game is entering a world devoid of civilization and colonize it.

Soooo you would need everything, you start from scratch.

I'm guessing that you won't have any master blacksmith NPC at the start, you would have nothing at least until your node has developed a little bit.

You would start with some basic weapons and the rest you would need to buy or craft.
    Same for armour.

Being this the case you would need to open mines for you (as a crafter) and for the NPCs in your node to use, same for all the other materials sources.

Before opening those mines you would not have access to that particular material.

But! If that material is necessary for the process of weapon forging or armour crafting, how would you make weapons and armour before opening that mine?

Same for rarer and better metals: before opening a mithril mine, how would you make mithril weapons? Would you be stuck with worse metal ones?
  • @ruairidh Fair point actually, but I would imagine some ressources are easy to come by, they just arent as good. Pine wood, iron ore, granite etc. is probably plentiful, while mithril and Yew might not :) I'd also imagine the as a general rule of thumb (as in most games) the better the ressources the better it is guarded. So at the beginning someone might be able to clear an iron mine with just a stick, while you need full plate to take the mithril mine.

+ No one said that there cant come ressources through the portal, we step through them right? So why not the occasional supply train (at least to start it off).

But I like the point, its basicly a question of how the early game is planned out :)
  • exactly!

That thing about supply is in fact right, didn't think about it though it would be interestint to speculate about how many resources could it carry and if it will eventually stop coming and when.

  • What if my character is a creationist and doesn't believe in evolution?

he may start to question the cataclysm that happened too many thousand years ago and the game implodes.

Or, maybe, he will be able to create materials out of nothing. Not sure.
  • @Karthos that would be fitting since, in this world, it is a fact that gods exist :)

Your character will be one of "those guys." :D

I think I understand what you're getting at: How will the miners get the tools to gather the ore for the smelters to smelt so that the toolsmiths can make tools for the miners?

I recall hearing that you begin with some basic starting tools to gather initial materials, but I'm not 100% sure.

Maybe jump on over and post this question for the next dev livestream?

only a very smart person could have summarized it so well.
  • From my understanding, without getting overly complicated, as your Node develops the population grows. That population comes from the world, so it would make sense that the population would bring supplies with them, especially tools. Once the Node develops into its third stage it will open caravan trading, allowing that Node to go beyond its boarders to gain better weapons and tools. so if there is an iron mine that is discovered for the first time, that Node will already have the tools in place from trade and they can get to work.

that is, if I read the concern correctly. Otherwise I will blame this comment on a lack of coffee
